It had been a passing comment from Zephyr on New Years that initially sparked a wry sort of interest in the blonde. You know who she is, don’t you? She’s one of Marino’s kids. Warren Marino. A member of the Syndicate who had been lost to the judicial system several years prior, although Sera hardly counted him as much of a loss. She rarely shed tears as it stood now, let alone when their enemies’ numbers decreased. While his family no doubt felt that loss and its resounding echo, their emotions were also none of her business nor concern. All that mattered tonight was how the youngest sister had accompanied Vasili to that infamous party and now sat patiently at the bar, chatting with Alison every so often as she finished up her duties before close. “Did you need something while you wait?” She addresses Isabella with an amicable smile. “Water maybe? Unless you’d prefer something stronger.”

“How quickly can you gather some muscle for hire?” Her voice carries through a narrow hallway into the familiar office above Purgatory, a pair of unrequested bodyguards trailing closely behind the captain and soldier as they walked in mid-conversation. Eventually she comes to rest only when positioned before an expensive bar cart, pouring two drinks while the security team closed the double doors behind them. No use divulging business on an empty stomach. “We have two containers moving out of the port on Friday,” she begins whilst passing him a glass. “One is intended for the Suffolk rail yard and then Indianapolis. The other ships out to Grand Rapids with a final delivery in Detroit.” Nothing major in terms of business operations, but with recent setbacks they cannot afford to miss this deadline. “We’ll need two, maybe three bodies to ensure everything flows without interruption. Can you bring in that one we liked before–– what was his name? Tikhon something?”

Despite not opening to the general public for another hour, Purgatory bustles with staff cleaning and preparing the atmosphere. Bar top wiped, floors mopped, liquor stocked, and about a thousand additional tasks that Sera oversaw from the glass window high above everyone. A translucent tower of sorts and far more useful than its ivory counterpart. Flipping through some paperwork, she only pauses to offer a cursory glance at the figure loitering in her doorway. “He is risen,” she mocks without accompanied venom, more prodding at religion than the spectacle himself whilst dropping the stack onto her desk. “If you aren’t careful, someone might mistake you for their messiah.” Her approach is languid, deceptively casual, before she settles with one hip leaning against mahogany. “Since when do you make house calls?”

There were some agreements that couldn’t be broken, some shipments that had to be made. And when New York’s infamous five families relied on the Bratva for supplying Wall Street’s favorite drug, it was deliver or die. The Syndicates blow on NYEs lodged a knife in the organization, shortages only twisting it further. On Tuesday, 300 lbs of cocaine were expected to leave the ports of Chicago- it was going to take a miracle to make it on time… luckily, the devil devised just that. 

They’d all been seen at Purgatory, Friday night photos provided the perfect alibi for what was to come. Zephyr doing the usual rounds, Kara and Sera sharing a drink at the bar… the office door shut behind her as Kara put the keycard on the desk: Timothy Mackie, Chemistry Grad Student. “It’s a twenty-four hour pass, got one of our guys to copy a working QR- whoever tracks it is going to find a ghost, at best.” The brunette nodded before she produced a set of keys. “I also got the van parked two days early out back so it’s not out of the ordinary, scrubbed the VIN too…” Ten years under the Bratva had all but hammered meticulousness into her bones. Especially when it came to a big league assignment like this. After all, failure could usually lead to a body bag. Eyes falling on Zephyr and Sera, Kara couldn’t help but lift an eyebrow. “I really hope not all your date nights are like this...”

Where Shawn Owens once established himself as the deceased marionette behind their drug operations, Sera remained a tactical executor of his strategy. Perhaps anyone else might have taken a poignant step back from their business role once married to the President, but she never fared well with idle hands. After the Syndicate’s recent attempt on Diana during the New Year’s party and with Alexei’s impromptu arrival adding unnecessary pressure, they were under the gun to mock up some crafty solution to their inventory problem. Enter Kara Yüksel, stage right. Where others might still hold reservations about her loyalty to the Bratva cause, Sera felt actions spoke louder than words and the soldier had become nothing if not useful. 

Or perhaps she simply held an unspoken soft spot for the girl; always holding out love for stray things.

Carefully tucking a gun into the back waistband of her pants before concealing it beneath the fabric of her dark jacket, Sera listened with a neutral expression that warmed in amusement at the other’s jest. “Just the good ones.” She catches Zephyr’s eye then, a knowing half-smirk passing between the pair before she taps at a building map laid out upon the desk. “Where are the security cameras located? Brooke should disable them if she hasn’t already. The last thing we need is another repeat of LITE.” @zephyrvrcnsky​

Brooke held a glass in her hand as her eyes focused on the older male mingling with some of the higher ups. It was more than obvious the dynamic between the pair was changing especially since she knew he was more than aware of the fact she had been in contact with her dead siblings which was why him being here was a way of taunting her. She brought her glass up to her lips, taking a long sip of it. When the male looked in her direction, the brunette tilted her drink in his direction with a doting smile appearing on her features. It was then her view of him was cut off by someone standing in front of her, clearing her throat. “Does Chicago usually have these sorts of cheesy parties every year?”

Making the rounds at events such as this one requires a certain ability to choke down words and plaster on a graceful smile, the sort which beckons conversation without the encouragement to delve further. Surface level amicability. Yet a gracious reprieve always comes when that pretense is exchanged for something a bit more genuine where the other Bratva are concerned. “Always,” she affirms with a sip of champagne. “Decade themes are usually a hit, as I’m sure you can tell.” It’s well worth initiating a rare exchange with the hacker whose renowned gifts have only been witnessed by Sera herself on a few occasions. And, well, they’ve never been properly acquainted beyond work and her own business relationship with the girl’s father. So curious. “I take it they didn’t have parties this excessive in Moscow.”

While it had been six months since her brother’s murder, the constant condolences and expressions of sympathy were quickly becoming old. And once again she was left wondering what life outside of the limelight would have been like, perhaps then her brothers memory wouldn’t be tainted by the media and those that claimed to knew him all because of his last name and wealth. Nevertheless, a chance to step back out into society and in the very least begin her own search for her brothers killer was more so enticing than spending the evening alone in her hotel room. “Depends on who you’re asking.” Leyla, countered as she came to a stop beside the woman.

Affluence of this caliber would perhaps never feel entirely comfortable to Sera, whose memories still held the hollow echoes of a miniature home on a hill and the makeshift hallways inside of a warehouse. Less glamorous yet arguably more formative than any vaulted ceilings she waltzed beneath tonight. Cheers to a comfortable life, well earned and as unscrupulous as ever. Behind each corner of this building stood either a friend or foe, including the woman at her side now whose presence accompanies both surprise and intrigue. “You disagree?” She questions from behind the rim of a champagne glass. “It’s nice to see you again, Leyla.”

Skylar had to wonder if this event would go on in harmony. Maybe things wouldn’t turn out like they had at Halloween, no cops bursting through the event to take certain individuals to the station. Her eyes focusing on the area around them, pressing her lips together. Her head turned when she heard a voice, not realizing Sera had been standing next to her the entire time. “It is beautiful but… We all know how it goes when we let our guards down.”

“So we never let them down.” Features soften at the acknowledgement from Skylar, immediately raking over her figure both out of light appreciation for the other woman’s outfit and a genuine concern. It isn’t often that Sera shoulders the responsibility of another’s safety, though whether or not her employee requests that level of involvement, it’s ingrained within the captain’s very personhood. Protecting someone who reminds her so fully of another lost to the sands of time. “This is quite the ordeal. How are you feeling?”

The harmless taunt that frees itself from his wife’s lips is one that he knows he’ll never tire of hearing. Conflict was one thing, but the comfort of Sera is something that Zephyr would never stop fighting for, whether it paved itself with obvious intention or not. “Happy wife, happy life.” He murmured, taking the seat now without second thought, only to pull her gently towards him until she perched his lap. “I’m neither sick nor avoidant, I just know which battles to pick, clearly.”

“Did you read that on a tourist’s keychain?” She volleys back while deliberately relegating her gaze to his face, a singular brow raising with coy expectation. Much of their affection stills remains behind closed doors and out of the public eye by design, it’s the only sanctity they can provide each other in an otherwise thoughtless world. Yet tonight she allows one palm to curve around the nape of his neck, silent reassurance of her presence and safety. “And you’re wise enough to never pick one with me,” Sera muses as dark hues follow the figure of Dilara Özdemir crossing the room some distance away. Always watchful, never fully allowing her guard to drop. “Smart man.” Another image captures the woman’s attention before she leans to whisper against his ear, “Unless my eyes deceive me, I think Vasili brought a date.”

Much had been instructed and absorbed over her years within the Bratva, with the most prominent lesson being that she could never allow herself a languid breadth to trust any situation at face value. Every inch of tonight’s celebration held vipers waiting to strike, every cup of champagne offered so easily diluted with poison, not to mention the risk of standing near to a balcony’s edge with unforgiving stonework below. Survival has become paramount where public gatherings are concerned and despite the glittering decadence which cloaks this event, Sera remains vigilant. “It’s such a beautiful party,” Sera muses aloud with mild interest, unwilling to reveal much else as she addresses whomever appears nearby. “Though I suppose that doesn’t count for much, does it?”
