Hello everyone, and welcome to the inn. There's been quite a few odd travelers coming through Falconreach as of late, but let it never be said that I would turn away someone in need of a meal or a room for the night just because they seemed a bit funny. That said, the inn has been very busy lately! So please, make yourselves at home, and I'll be with you in just a moment! ((Independent, semi-selective RP blog for Serenity from Dragonfable. OC and Crossover friendly; please check the rules page before RPing!)) Valtrith storyline not canon to this blog!
Have you ever wondered what the innkeeper must think when your party arrives to rest for the night after fighting dragons all day? Have you ever wondered how the shopkeepers feel when the hub town is attacked? Have you ever wondered what it must be like to be a background character in a fantasy game?
Meet Serenity. As owner and operator of the totally-not-haunted Falconreach Inn (which she bought after the previous owner left and then mysteriously never returned) she has seen all kinds of heroes and monsters and served them up a warm meal and a warm smile all the same.
Care to be the next visitor to the inn?

“That’s impossible! We sealed it away over an ancient temple! According to the Divine Dragon, there’s no way Grima could’ve woken up within the century. As for the darkness elementals, Grima had an army of the undead, not elementals.” Owain wasn’t sure what was going on, but these two dragons couldn’t be one in the same…but then again how could two world ending dragons exist at once?
“I suppose there might have also been undead—death and darkness go hand in hand, and it’s not really like any of us wanted to take a good look at what might have been beyond the barrier,” she conceded.
A thought struck.
“Wait, a temple?! I thought it was a castle?! Owain, hold on, where was Grima sealed? Was it out in the wastelands?”
For all the Lords in the sky, Serenity dearly wished that they hadn’t accidentally released some great evil all those months ago.
Serenity: I was hoping we could start with some insights into what you were thinking during your time in the ice.
Hero: Sure, yeah. Well, I can do better than that - I can tell you EXACTLY what I was thinking. I feel like I’ve gone some… some of the more important questions - but not the answers. But… definitely things that kept me up at night.
Serenity: Go on.
Hero: How come Aquaman can control whales? They’re mammals. It doesn’t even make any sense.
((I’m cooking a lot more than usual (which is to say, i’m cooking) in the past 24 hours and never have I felt more connected to my muse than I do right now. I had to put my cookies on hold until I can get some cream, but I’m gonna make some belgian waffles with blueberries in them while we still have the flour out.))
This is a rough timeline of this verse as I have decided on it so far. Some elements are subject to change over time, but until then, this is how everything goes down.
Some time after the Storm War, Xan appeared in Falconreach asking if the Hero would be willing to do a favor for him: he’s entered into a depression following Warlic’s death and revival and believes that he’s lost the knack for his particular brand of horrifying villainy, so he wants the Hero to fight his magnum opus, the Magman, to see if he should keep trying or just call it quits.
Canonically, while the Hero defeats his monster, it only reignites the spark of hatred in Xan and he goes back to being a villain, keeping in with the status quo. In this universe however, it doesn’t, and Xan follows through with his word. He hangs up his tomes, gets some new hobbies—and takes a job heating up the inn.
While Serenity is admittedly very apprehensive on the topic of letting Xan into her inn considering he burned the entire city down, like, months ago, she still gives him a shot since he seems sincere in wanting to change his ways. From that point on, Xan can be found in the inn, mostly dealing with internal heating or managing the stoves, but sometimes doing odd jobs or talking with Serenity. The two eventually develop a friendship, one that Xan has somewhat of a hard time wrapping his head around because in all his centuries, no one has ever been this nice to him for no reason. No one but Jaania...
Their friendship is marked by several small, but meaningful moments.
Serenity asking Xan to teach her a very basic fire spell for various practical uses in the kitchen, leading to Xan discovering that her understanding of fire is more complete than he would have expected—as well as discovering that while she may have forgiven him for it, she still has nightmares of him burning everything down to a single board, something that Xan is surprised at how guilty he feels about.
The two of them having a very reflective conversation on the topic of names after Serenity hears Warlic refer to Xan as Alexander; Xan prefers to go by “Xan” since he feels too far removed from Alexander, and Serenity actually agrees with him. Serenity isn’t exactly her real name after all, and she’s probably not the same person she was before losing her memories either.
Serenity asking Xan to taste something that he finds to both be very good and not immediately burn in contact with his flames; Serenity had been wondering what food must taste like for him and decided, on a whim, to make food that he could enjoy just like everyone else.
Xan doing some extra work around this inn just because he had some spare time and it needed to be done, like laundry or sweeping or cleaning the tables in the tavern, and Serenity thanks him and gives him a quick peck on the cheekbone in thanks—something that leaves a lasting impression on Xan because when was the last time anyone did that?
Xan and Serenity going to a local festival together, though their fun night out receives a lot of interference from the Hero, who keeps trying to prevent Serenity from letting Xan know Warlic is at the festival too.
And more I haven’t thought up yet.
Serenity also insists on getting Xan and Warlic back on speaking terms, if not friendly ones. There’s a lot of animosity between them that has been going on for many centuries too long, and it’s time for both of them to move on with their lives so they can be happy. The process of Warlic and Xan airing out their various grievances and making peace with one another is long and painful, but the two do eventually agree to bury the hatchet. Xan even finally agrees to let Warlic work with him on his attempts at freeing their mutual love, Jaania, from the icy prison they accidentally trapped her in all those centuries ago.
During all that time meanwhile, Serenity’s friendship with Xan was slowly growing a new dimension, and Serenity eventually asks the pyromancer out on a date. She takes him out on a picnic near the bay and they talk and watch the water while munching on various homecooked goodies, eventually confessing her feelings and asking where he wanted to go from there. While Xan is admittedly still in love with Jaania, his time with Serenity had made him realize that for all he adored her, she had never made any real indication that she saw him as anything other than a good friend all those centuries ago. After much soul searching on Xan’s part and coming to terms with his feelings for Jaania in comparison to his feelings for Serenity, the two of them enter into a relationship.
Several changes to the timeline occur due to Xan being in Falconreach this whole time rather than his volcano fortress. The Great Fire War has nowhere near as many casualties, because Xan is either not there to teach Konnan fire magic, or straight up refuses to teach him what he wants to learn in order to destroy the Hero. Konnan might still become Drakonnan though, but if so he will be significantly weaker due to having incomplete training. The Hero is able to recover the Fire Orb, and leaves it in Yulgar’s care.
Additionally, because Xan and Warlic have made peace, Jaania is freed from her prison way ahead of schedule, before the Orb saga has even ended. Serenity insisted on coming to Swordhaven with them, and tempers Jaania’s first glimpse into the future by being a friendly face that she doesn’t already have a history with. Due to being released under much less stressful terms, and with both of her friends in a much better mental state, Jaania is able to begin healing from the trauma of being trapped for so long, unable to move or talk to anyone. She ends up following the trio to Falconreach and takes up residence at the inn, with Serenity convincing her that she’ll have an easier time adjusting to the future in a new environment, rather than an old one that’s so different from what she remembers that it may as well be new.
With Xan and Jaania on hand during Final 13, Warlic isn’t pressed so hard to maintain the shield on Falconreach that he overloads and splits in half, resulting in the Wargoth Saga never occurring and the Atealan’s home planet never being destroyed. The Hero is never frozen, and the elements remain in balance. Additionally, due to Jaania getting proper support and treatment for effectively spending centuries in a sensory deprivation tank, her ideas for removing magic altogether gradually turn into enforcing better regulations on magic and raising awareness for how dangerous it can truly be. The Rose, therefore, would be less a gestapo-esque organization dedicated to the subjugation of magical creatures and the end of all magic on Lore, but more like. Magic OSHA or something.
At some point during what would have been the timeskip, Serenity eventually marries Xan, and they have a son named Emmer who is gifted with his father’s magical potential and his mother’s good sense.
“Grima could definitely swallow the sun. We managed to fit a small army on it’s back for Nagas sake! One of it’s nicknames is the wings of despair!” Owain felt a sense of dread and rage over the possibility of Grima returning to kill the people of this world.
Oh. The ‘Wings of Despair’ was a term unfamiliar to her, but the rest of it...
“In that case, I’m afraid your Prince Chrom’s sealing skills weren’t quite what they should have been. That beast kept the sun from us for most of a day—it was practically by sheer miracle that our mages managed to keep a shield up to prevent the darkness elementals from entering the city...”
“Oh, but don’t worry!”, she said, frantically gesturing with her hands, “We’re fine now! That was months ago, the dragon is dead now!”
((now I really wanna make a modern au,,,,, but i don’t really like modern aus so it’ll probably end up being like another superhero au because i fucking love those.))
"Ah, Serenity," he says, chuckling as a greeting as he enters the tavern. "I hope i'm not interrupting you or anything."
“Not at all, I was actually about to start prepping for the dinner rush,” she replied. “Should I just continue on my merry way, or fetch twice the beef as usual now that you’re here?”
There was certainly a teasing tone in her voice, but the innkeeper meant no offense. Adventuring took a lot of energy, and most adventurers tended to eat a lot to compensate for it. Serenity couldn’t really blame the foreign swordsman for his dining habits.
“Hmmm,” Ike muses as he looks at the wide variety of flowers available at the stalls. Roses, daisies, and various others that he didn’t know the names of decorated the market place and bathed the area in their fragrance. Vendors called out to potential customers to sample their wares, others were already in the middle of business. Ike himself didn’t know where to start.
“Flowers aren’t really my area of expertise,” he tells Serenity. “I was hoping you might know.” A hint of sheepishness in his voice, regardless he keeps her company to help her decide on something.
Oh. Well in that case—
“I’m afraid I can’t be too much help on your end of things—there are dozens of plants where I’m from that would be beneficial for warriors, but I don’t see any of them here. They must not grow in this part of the world,” she surmised.
“If you were in the tourney, I’d say... maybe white heather? I’m not 100% certain, but I think it’s supposed to mean good luck.”
Actually, now that she thought about it, some heather would be a good choice for bringing home. It would be nice to spruce up the inn, and she could use it to flavor the ale and scent the wash and...
“It was delicious, thank you,” he said, giving a grateful smile.
The comment about the currency gave him pause, though he managed not to falter in his step following her.
“Alchemised?” he asked, glad that he was able to keep his voice sounding simply curious rather than surprised “Is alchemy common here, then?”
As far as he’d known, alchemy was near-dead art, along with most traditional magic. If it was still going strong here, well, that could lead to some… interesting (or unfortunate, depending on how you looked at it) gaps in his knowledge.
“It depends on what you mean by alchemy“, Serenity replied, casually heading back into the kitchen. She’d already briefed her sous-chef that they’d be having someone on dish-duty for a while, so that area was free. The innkeeper gave a quick wave as she continued explaining.
“Entry-level alchemy is something that you can just pick up in an hour or two of study, so most every village has one or two budding alchemists. What you’d learn in a classroom is a lot more difficult, so trained or licensed alchemists aren’t as common. We do have two of them right down the road though, and they’d probably be better at explaining things than I am anyways if you’re still curious."
She stopped, and straightened out her apron. “Alright, Mister Sys-Zero, here we are. If you have any more questions for me, I’ll be happy to answer them. I’ll come and get you when your time is up, alright?”
