Theory: Was Ronald Dorelaine Autistic?

(Just a fan interpretation, not a claim about Clown or canon.)

Clown has confirmed that Wally, Frank, and Julie are autistic, each presenting differently. Frank is fascinated by observing bugs and likes things to be just so. Julie has an over-the-top personality and expects everyone playing her games to follow the rules exactly. There are also neurodivergent themes throughout Welcome Home (e.g. Poppy showing severe anxiety and agoraphobia.)

There are already several theories that Wally is Ronald Dorelaine, or proxy. Wally's curiosity about everyday things like eating, sleeping, and other ordinary behaviors has always reminded me of a neurodivergent person trying to understand and adapt to a world that wasn't built for the way they naturally think.

Here's my interpretation: what if Ronald Dorelaine himself was written as an autistic creator? Not because we're meant to diagnose him, but because it would fit the story's recurring themes. Maybe Ronald created Welcome Home as a safe haven, where everyone follows familiar scripts, sticks to their role, and nothing is ever "wrong."

If Wally truly reflects Ronald in some way, then his imprisonment inside Home becomes more than just horror. It becomes the story of an autistic creator who built a safe place, only to become trapped inside it, forever looking out at us through the screen, unable to leave the world he created.

Whether or not that's what Clown intended, I think it's an interesting lens through which to read the story.

Just my opinion, not yucking anyone's yum: I think I'd fuck with Appleblossom as a pairing more if it was sort of an Utena and Anthy dynamic, with Julie in the Utena role and Wally in the Anthy role. I cannot see Wally being princely in a meaningful sense. He is by necessity of his being inhabiting a very passive role wherein his agency is seen covertly and in the dark.

Like. Okay. Julie is, at her heart, a sad and grieving princess in her coffin. She has experienced some sort of sorrow and keeps her volatile, aching inner self hidden behind a tomboyish sporty front. The front is still very much her, too, like it's not just her performing. It's armor she's grown to protect that softer part of herself, and it's just as much a part of her as the inside part is.

She's vigorous and boisterous and outspoken. She tends to bowl others over without noticing, not out of any malice, but just because she doesn't fully know her own strength. She feels subtly uncomfortable with the princess roles forced on her in Sally's plays, but doesn't understand why. She chases a prince ideal and sees herself as a prince while still harboring a possible crush on the recurrent prince of her life, Frank.

Wally is sluggish and quiet. He is not shy, but he sits on the sidelines of his own life, watching the others in their play. He is polite and gentle, but also harsh in his own way, sometimes inappropriately blunt in his observations of others. He wears a smile to please others. To wear any other face would stir the waters too much. He knows something terrible and is at once amused and tormented by it. Sometimes he is cheeky, sometimes he is just despaired.

Wally is popular, but not regarded by most by the merits of his own personality. He is a symbol in and of the world. He is weird and scary if you look at him for too long. He is weak and falls down easily. There is a persistent and very precious helplessness to him. A Prince should protect him. There seems to be only one person who truly knows him. He is going to sell you body and soul to that which he serves.
