If you think Arya Stark is a âpsychopathâ, then you clearly you donât know the definition of the word. Let me help you a little. A psychopath is someone who has amoral and antisocial behavior, isnât able to love or have healthy relationships, is very egocentric, and performs random, unprovoked acts of violence.
Arya has never been an amoral person. She protected her sister and defended Lady when she was going to be killed. She still holds a grudge about Mycah being killed. She questions the social system constantly, in regards to how lowborns are treated differently.
âArya had loved nothing better than to sit at her fatherâs table and listen to them talk. She had loved listening to the men on the benches too; to freeriders tough as leather, courtly knights and bold young squires, grizzled old men-at-arms. She used to throw snowballs at them and help them steal pies from the kitchen. Their wives gave her scones and she invented names for their babies and played monsters-and-maidens and hide-the-treasure and come-into-my-castle with their children. Fat Tom used to call her âArya Underfoot,â because he said that was where she always was. Sheâd liked that a lot better than âArya Horseface.ââ
âWhy arenât you down in the yard?â Arya asked him.
He gave her a half smile. âBastards are not allowed to damage young princes,â he said. âAny bruises they take in the practice yard must come from trueborn swords.â
âOh.â Arya felt abashed. She should have realized. For the second time today, Arya reflected that life was not fair.â
She is far from an antisocial person. She traveled with people, groups big and small, for the first three books. She befriends anyone, no matter their social status, color, age, size, anything. If they are good people and kind to her, she is kind to them.
âSansa knew all about the sorts of people Arya liked to talk to: squires and grooms and serving girls, old men and naked children, rough-spoken freeriders of uncertain birth. Arya would make friends with anybody. This Mycah was the worst; a butcherâs boy, thirteen and wild, he slept in the meat wagon and smelled of the slaughtering block. Just the sight of him was enough to make Sansa feel sick, but Arya seemed to prefer his company to hers.â
She has never had a problem making friends. Shall I name a few? Mycah, Syrio, Gendry, Hot Pie, Lommy, Gendry, Jaqen. I could go on for days.
And let me just say, Arya is the furthest from egocentric that a person can get. She is an extremely compassionate person.
A few the things sheâs done for others (not even close to all sheâs done):
Shares the little food she has with Gendry
Goes back to save Jaqen, Rorge and Biter from the fire, even though it could have killed her.
Gives water to multiple people in need: the dying Northmen in ASoS, the dying man she comes across when sheâs with Sandor, the dying man in the House of Black and White, etc.
Saves Samwell from the thieves in Braavos.
Thereâs so many more moments I could mention.
While Arya has killed people, these killings were not ârandomâ or âunprovokedâ. She kills either because they were people who killed her family/friends, or people she had to kill otherwise theyâd kill her. These people were not innocents.
So, no, Arya Stark is not a psychopath, a sociopath, or compassionless in any way. And if you think so, you either havenât read the books and are completely clueless as to who Arya is, or you really need to go buy a dictionary.
And, to quote the great Forrest Gump, thatâs all I have to say about that.
