I made my girlfriend a shitty mix for her birthday because I'm so cliche
A re-remix of my remix of September by Earth Wind & Fire This time I added some Steroflexer, more compression and EQ’d the vocals
Final Project Outline (Pending)
My final project is going to be a dance music project, I have not yet titled. It shall include 5 songs, composed by myself in Ableton Live 9 Suite. My approach to making this EP is extremely experimental. I have been listening to a very large amount of dance music, and trying to break down how to emulate the underground rave-club bass oriented sound I'm shooting for. As instrumentation is concerned, I shall be using a wide variety of 3rd party plug-ins such as Massive, Nexus, Sylenth, KICK – Nicky Romero edition, among others I shall list upon others I shall list later
I will also be using Ableton's Simpler, Sampler, and Drum Rack frequently, often in combination with samples from various sound packs such as the vengeance packs, & Deadmau5 Xfer. As far as scheduling goes, I'm really spending most of my spare time in Ableton working on songs, some of which will be included in this EP though I'm not sure which ones. I'd estimate I'm spending at least 4 hours in Ableton every day since the beginning of the term working on something. I'm going for a dark, yet energetic sound with this EP. I shall be drawing a lot of inspiration from AC Slater's NightBass project. I will be trying to layer a lot of simple melodies into a repetitive thumping beat designed for easy transitions and looping when playing these tracks in the club on CDJ's or the like. This is my first real musical project aside from recording some DJ sets, and I'm very glad that Is started working on this at the beginning of the term. This project is very intimidating.
As far as preproduction notes go, I don't really have anything, however I do have a large quantity of songs that are just stems or half finished. I am going to try and make this EP primarily house oriented music, as it is what I am most familiar with. I'm not very good at making melodies, so I expect that most of my songs will be more on the minimalistic side, and I'm hoping to be able to find some sort of a way to switch things up a bit so my songs don't sound too repetitive.
I will be producing almost all of this using the Ableton Push, which I have found to be a gift and a curse. I don't have a keyboard that works very well (can't find the cord for the mpk) and I haven't have a chance to utilize the night-pass I got this term so my instrumentation is very much literally in the box, though I am working on trying to change scales in pieces, though it is hard to do that and maintain a workflow. In my opinion anyways. I'm not really sure what else to say about my project aside from the fact that I'm going to probably be pretty embarrassed by it because I'm not talented of a musician. Playing my tunes in front of the class is always hard for me and I hate doing it. I hope that I have at least one song on my EP that I can be proud of. If I can make just one song that I would play at a gig, I'd consider this a success.
In conclusion, 1st real project. I'm intimidated. I'm still learning how to make melodies, which is a large limitation, that I will try to overcome using the Push's scale feature which I find to be a double edged sword. I'm probably never going to show this EP to anyone because I think I'm terrible at making music, though the only way to get better is to keep trying.
Music Video I made for my Ableton Lab class
I began by toying around with various drum kits before settling on “Hymned Kit 02″ except I replaced one of the Hats with Synth Shot 216 from the vengeance minimal house set. I then settled on KICK - Nicky Romero edition for the large pounding kick drum I need to work with the Minimal house sound. After making a few drum patterns I liked I began working on basslines. This was the hard part for me, as I’m not very skilled with music writing. After creating a few basslines to switch between, I threw down the drum loops and started figuring out where I want the kick to come into the track. After having the top loops and the kick foundation settled I began laying down the bassline in a manner that was inconsistent with the exact timing of the top loops to try and add a little spice. I also used some up/downlifters from the vengeance essential house 1 kit along with an additional return channel that has a Swirl autofilter and sausage fattener for some additional texture. Over all, I feel like the song definitely falls into the Minimal/Tech/Deep-House criteria though I feel the instrumentation leaves a bit to be desired due to to my skill level.
Song I made for my Ableton lab. Inspired by Nice N Trick.
Money Right (BPM Fiasco)
I really don’t know how to go about explaining my creation of this track. I guess I just threw the Lex Luger starter kit on a drum rack and figured out which hi hats I liked best then I got em runnin. Then I opened up the Can’t Tell Me Nothing Acapella, chopped out the intro loop that I wanted and warped it to the grid. After that I did a LOT of fooling around with kick drums and couldn’t decide on any particular drum sample(s) so I went with the Nicky Romero KICK plugin and chose the Trap1 preset which allows for pitched drums. I then dabbled around on the Push until I found something that I thought sounded good with lex luger snare & hats as well as the Kanye loop. The instrument labeled “Dat Smoov” is some sort of a guitar/organish sample (simpler “VEH1 Cutted Sounds -030″) I found and really liked. I threw an EQ 8 and chorus on there for a larger sound. Plick is another instance of simpler using “VEE Synth Sound 037″, EQ 8, Sausage fattener and sidechain compressed to “dat smoov” After dabbling around and finding some patterns I liked I layered everything together and was reasonably pleased with the end result. Especially the Jersey/BMore Club switch-up at the end but it still needed more low-end, so I threw on “Dance Bass Selecta” (Option #3) and copied the pattern from the KICK channel and threw it under the kick drum for some appropriate sub-bass I also used an uplifter/downlifter (it’s an uplifter but I reversed it when using it for the 3rd time at the end) from the Vengeance pack in the beginning and end of the song Finally, I recorded the master track to Audio 8 with no clipping and added on the BBE Sonic Sweet D82 Sonic Maximizer, tried to fill the track up a bit more then flattened it, exported and uploaded it here.
No genres just music.
