6,662 files left to go through. Im tired of this grandpa. I'm about to just delete everything and start fresh. Who needs these random ass pictures from 10 years ago when I could simply Not have them.

Emerges covered in blood and viscera I'm done sorting that drive. Ive deleted many files, countless files, but I am that much closer to moving to linux. All I have left are the few random personal files on the 2TB drive and my music library, which is fairly well sorted already. I should be on linux on my personal computer by tomorrow evening at the latest.

Many attempts at arch were made but ultimately none succeeded. I have installed the Weenie Hut Jr of Linux Distros, Mint, and will just be content that Microsoft isnt spying on me for now. I may make more attempts later, but for now, I am happy.

I'm finally making the moves to have my laptop be linux as well. I made a windows vm on my desktop and tested if the program that I need runs on the vm. It does, so now I have no reason to have Windows on my laptop.

I'll likely end up going with Mint again cause I've gotten used to it, but maybe this is a good time to attempt Arch Install 2.0? Probably not; between the desktop and the laptop, the laptop needs to be as frictionless as possible because it's specifically for school. We shall see.

This is the last computer I have that doesnt have linux installed as its main OS. I cant wait to pry Microsoft's grubby little mits out of my life as much as is possible at this time.

My biggest tip for any new Linux user, who wishes to get more familiar with the terminal, is to make a custom bash prompt.

It'll be cool and awesome and you'll be so proud of it, you'll want to open up your terminal all the time to see it, and you'll want to type in commands to see more of it.

It's not a difficult thing to do, and there are a bunch of generators.

Tho, I suggest you also get hands on with it, actually writing a little bit yourself, so it feels more personal and thus more cool.

And use nerdfonts if you want, they're really good looking

Almost. Years ago my computer suddenly stopped working and lost everything on it. Fortunately a relatively recent backup still existed bc of my family, a recent parts switch, and dumb luck. But last year a friend of mine got hacked and lost close to everything he had done creatively in the last 17-ish years. Art. Novels in progress. Entire conlangs. DnD character Sheets. Music he had made. All gone. He never backed any of it up. Few months later I started this habit (or ritual, almost) of drawing a reminder beast any time I would make a full complete backup. In hopes that seeing these things might remind others and myself. (Another factor here is that I am an animator and some of the stuff on my computer took literal years to make. And the film university I go to urges us to take this stuff seriously, too.)

There’s an old saying in the computer world.

There are two kinds of people

Those who have lost everything because of a drive failure

And those that are GOING TO lose everything because of a drive failure

That is why you back up your stuff. It isn’t if, it’s when. If it isn’t drive failure, it’s going to be malware, or ransomeware, or a battery that fails and destroys your laptop, or a lightning strike that destroys your system, or a house fire/flood/earthquake, or simple theft of your device, the list is as long as your arm. Someday you WILL have a problem that eats all of your data. Then the only thing that will save your a** will be backups. Personally I have three levels; TimeMachine, back up to the cloud, and a drive that I back everything up to once a month and keep in the fireproof safe.

Back up your stuff.

(That includes your phone and tablet too)

A few friends and myself have decided to apply to ICANN (the corporation that runs these kinds of things) for a new gTLD (generic Top Level Domain, yknow, like .org or .com) that isn’t for-profit. Instead of paying your money to a digital landlord like GoDaddy and their shareholders, that money is being funneled straight back into the queer community, queer projects, queer charities, etc…

To do that, we need to apply, and to apply, we need money.

The bad: it’s €80,000.

The good: we already got half.

The better: we got half in under ten days.

We’re not there yet, though. There’s two ways to get this money. The first is to promise to sell user data. Since literally our whole thing is paying back into the community, selling user information to governments rapidly spiralling into full-blown fascism or some billionaire who mostly wants to just get even more billionaire…der… We decided not to do that.

So the alternative:

Kickstarter.

I know, I know, it’s not cool to ask for money, but if it’s any consolation we literally can’t get rich off of this and when it starts to make a profit, that money is going to be going into your local queer communities, they will have but to reach out and ask for it. :)

We are trying to build an internet by us, for us.

I am reviving this blog to document my journey into Linux. I absolutely despise Windows OS and the one benefit it has for me that Linux doesn't, team fight tactics (a video game), only has it because it allows kernel level anti-cheat, something that should have never existed in the first place. I'm moving away from subscriptions, away from generative AI, and away from Microsoft and moving into the loving arms of free open source software and Linux.

To do this, I'm going the long way about this and organizing all of my files from Windows into a 1TB hard drive for easy moving. I'm deleting unnecessary junk as I go along and going about generally sorting shit for easy navigation. I'll be moving it all onto my current server computer, which is running Debian 13. It'll function as my file backup in the unfortunate event of me borking my desktop since I'll be moving onto Arch.

Is it a smart move to start off with Arch as my first jump into using Linux as my daily driver? Probably not, but I'm somewhat comfortable in the terminal and am fine troubleshooting, so I'll figure it out. And if I don't, I can always switch to Mint.
