The Conspiracy Against Us All
Matthew 13:33— Jesus told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.”
It is definitely a conspiracy.
Everywhere I turn, something is up. Friends, neighbors, family, strangers...movies. It is everywhere. Some people may not even know what they are doing. But I know better than that for some of them—they know what they are doing! They surround my children with them. Give a mention of them here or there, “casually” in conversation. They drop “subtle” hints within earshot. Sometimes they just come right out and say it, “Why don't you?” “Why won't you?” They literally try to drop them off and let us deal with the wreckage of it all.
Well, I'm onto it all! I know what they are doing! And I am not going to give in, give up, or cave in... The McPhersons will not get a puppy! (...At least not until I cave...eventually...I'm sure it is bound to happen...oh well.)
It's not that I don't like dogs, I like them just fine when they are not mine. I don't have to clean up after them, don't have to scoop their poop, don't have to feed them, don't have to deal with dog hair. (And for all you out there who say that there are “non-shedding” dogs, I say to you, I'm not supposed to shed my hair either and yet I do...game, set, and match). Besides, I have three growing mouths to feed; I don't want another drooling one. So you see, it's not that I don't like dogs, I just don't want them near me too much...a couple minutes a month is fine.
However, I know that some day a daughter of mine will break my heart and make me give in. And I'll have to give up and deal with it all...but not yet! You just know that I know that there is a conspiracy against me.
I love that Jesus relates the kingdom of God to something hidden, secret, working underneath it all, like a conspiracy waiting to reveal itself. God may have worked in some of your lives in a conspiratory way—a kind word here, a loving gesture there, the Spirit nudging you bit, etc. etc. And before you knew it, you were knee deep in God's love and maybe even started gathering with His church. Some of us have been there and done that. But what Scripture reveals also is that we all are called to be his co-conspirators in the Kingdom. God is working in peoples' lives around us in ways that we cannot imagine. Ways that seem like yeast in dough—hidden, quiet, unnoticed. And yet some day that yeast is going to show its work.
Are we prepared to be the yeast when God wants us to be? Or to be the hands kneading if needed? (No pun intended of course.) Are we prepared to be in on the Great Conspiracy of Love, or do we just think conspiracies are for moon landings, aliens, and puppy dogs?
