Numbers’ Week, day four: hundred and the return of duodecimal system

Hundred is an Old English word for ‘a counting of 100’ and comes from West Germanic hundrath, where the first element, Proto-Germanic hundam comes from very, very reduced PIE dekm-, which means 'ten’ (decimal, anyone? PIE is the root of everything). The second part is Proto-Germanic rath, which means 'a number’. Actually, hund was more common than hundred in Old English.

In Old Norse hundrath meant 'long hundred’, which equals 120. Yep, it’s the duodecimal system again - as you can see, it was very widely used in almost every European country. It wasn’t until the expansion of Christianity that decimal system was introduced. At that time, the prhases hundrath tolf-roett 'duodecimal hundred’ and hundrath ti-raett 'decimal hundred’ were introduced to bring some clarity to the world that was still using two systems.

Revolutionary France also had an impact on today’s use of decimal system - they were so obsessed with it, that they had decimal calendars, decimal weeks, decimal clocks, which was absolutely crazy. Of course, it didn’t last long, but they successfully made the world accept the decimal system once again.

I'm not going to add "going to the gym" as one of my New Years resolutions. That's too cliche. I'll add "walk more" and "do more house work." My major New Years resolution is to be consistent and persistent when it comes to my writing and art. Wishes don't come true unless you make them come true yourself.
