BUT IMAGINE EZRA WITH RUFFLED HAIR LOOKING PUT OUT AS HE TRIES TO FIX IT.
Wee Ezra learning to read a mark and stack a deck in smoky backrooms and cramped hotel rooms makes me sad because what a childhood to have. And seeing him with kids, how good he is with him and knowing he probably doesn’t remember being a kid makes me even sadder.
All I’m saying is that there WAS a nerf gun war in the Seven’s ATF office. It started off fine. Shooting Chris in the back as he leaves, Buck and JD laughing and firing at one another across their computers. Shooting at Ezra until he leaves to get coffee (for like two hours).
Then JD finds out you can mod these guns. And he mods the hell out of him. we are talking stronger firing force and speed. I mean fully automatic Nerf gun. The guns from JD get so powerful that they start leaving strange circular bruises that confuse the hell out of Nathan. But soon he brushes it off, he’s just glad that they aren’t actually bullet wounds.
Then it extends outside of the office and Joshua is getting bopped on the head by a foam dart that came from the barrel of a modded NERF sniper rifle (That JD gave him) from about the 6th story window. Vin tips an imaginary hat.
Chris has tried to stay above it all but he gets a small one that shots about six darts. Every time he feels a nerf gun train on him he whips it out and fires directly in the chest of whoever raises their gun.
It’s about the time Chris gets a gun Ezra snaps. He’s tired of having foam darts stick to his computer screen and bouncing off him. And bouncing into his take out. So he mods his own six-shooter and he also makes his own sleeve rig for a two shooter.
It takes a few weeks and the fight slowly dwindles down, but it never really ends. All it takes is one of them bored and a single dart to fly across the room not really aimed at anyone for the war to start again. No one is safe.
Hey, I just met you
And this is crazy
But here’s my biggest and most potentially dangerous secret
So be my friend maybe?

omg someone coming into town bc they heard Vin was hanging out in a town called Four Corners and he’s worth money.
But they don’t have like, a wanted poster for him. They have a vague description at best, the desperate hope they’ll recognize a wanted man at worst.
So they just kind of… make it known that they’re looking for Vin Tanner. Because he has a bounty on his head. And they wanna take him in. For the bounty. Surely someone will cough up the info.
And this comes out while all the boys are sitting in the Saloon playing cards and they pause for like, three very long seconds while everyone is either staring at them waiting to see how they’re going to deal with this, or looking Anywhere But At The Guys With Guns and Inez is just staring at this idiot in shock bc…. do you not know where you are, do you not want to survive the night??
And JD, who is being educated in the ancient world by Chris and Josiah atm because the boy needs an education and sorry Buck, you can’t teach him everything and dear god we don’t want you to, has a brainwave and stands up and declares.
“I’m Vin Tanner!”
And the bounty hunter turns around and they’re preeeeettty sure this kid isn’t Vin Tanner. On the other hand, why on earth would he pretend to be? And while they’re puzzling it out, Josiah, who is quick on the uptake and sees exactly where this is going and also doesn’t want to have to break any arms tonight, stands up and booms
“No, I am Vin Tanner.”
Nathan, having read all the ancient Greek and Roman stuff he can because Hippocrates, clues in, and stands up too.
“No, I am Vin Tanner.”
Ezra stands with what can only be described as a flourish and proclaims “I am Vin Tanner!”
And after that the order loses all coherency as everyone stands up at once claiming to be Vin Tanner, and at least one argument breaks out along the lines of “I’m Vin Tanner,” “No I’m Vin!” “No I am definitely Vin, I remember it distinctly.” “bullshit! I am!” “You’re both wrong, I am.”
Mary having followed the bounty hunter into the Saloon because she is observant and had her suspicions, sees this, and is delighted. She also declares herself Vin Tanner and starts writing the lead story for the next edition of the newspaper up right then and there, while the bounty hunter’s still clutching their beer, bewildered and deeply confused and with no idea what to do.
(bonus: Chris rises slowly from his chair in the middle of all the hubbub. By the time he’s upright an unnatural hush has fallen over the Saloon. He growls “I am Vin Tanner.” And the bounty hunter promptly either faints or flees before he can even continue with his planned and terribly menacing ‘you gonna take me in?’ Vin, sitting beside him with a grin that could almost be described as dopey, drawls “you gotta work on your people skills, cowboy.”)
(it becomes a running joke that everyone refers to everyone as Mr. Tanner, especially around strangers)

OK so I have a Thing for the original Pete’s Dragon movie(it’s so weird I love it so much).
But Vin as Pete.
Tiny baby Vin with long hair and big blue eyes, alone in the world and scared, who meets a goddamn dragon and makes friends with him. Eliot’s big and friendly and keeps him safe and nothing like the humans he’s known (his mother excepted, of course.) Eliot keeps him warm, makes him feel loved, and they never have a problem understanding each other. (Eliot says he loves him and Vin says it back and it never matters that they don’t speak the same language.) It takes a few years, probably, but they find Vin a home, probably with one of the tribes he’d lived with, a place Eliot knows he’ll be safe and he can be happy because he can be free and learn all the things he wants to about the wilderness and the animals out there that Eliot just doesn’t know. Eliot has to go, and Vin cries but he understands. It hurts, but everything does sooner or later, and time dulls the edge of the pain.
And Ezra as Pete too.
He’s a little older than Vin, and there are a lot more people around where Ezra is, and what he needs of Eliot is different - he doesn’t need help surviving in the same way, but he does need to be kept safe. Needs help hiding, sometimes, because he’s good at it but sometimes adults know just where to look and a little distraction goes a long way. Maybe it goes further and Ezra needs to run away, or chooses to because he’s sick of being dumped, tired of being ignored or used and never anything else, and Eliot lights their campfire in the middle of nowhere and doesn’t say anything about Ezra’s tears. He roasts apples and makes jokes and asks questions that Ezra somehow understands even though the words sound like nonsense.
Ezra finds a better place, or Maude does for Ezra, and Eliot has to leave. He has to come back too, though, and Ezra is both resentful and intensely grateful.
Years later, Eliot comes visiting, of course, because he says he can’t come back because there are other kids that need him, but they’re still his kids, and he worries that they haven’t found a home, a family, even though they’re definitely adults now. And he is delighted that Vin and Ezra know each other, and if one of them doesn’t stumble upon the other arguing with a large patch of empty air in a back alley(No you can’t walk down main street, you’ll scare the horses! We’ve been through this before! And please avoid the mud for once, your footprints cannot be hidden without a shovel!) then Eliot makes sure they find out another way.
So yeah, au where nothing is changed except the boys have a gigantic sometimes-invisible dragon with purple hair and firebreathing capabilities on their side. (in a wooden town, no less. Oh god.)
He may be shockingly naive, but he’s not stupid.
