Vin would be Amazing at shows like Alone, which are basically just being left in the wilderness and being told to survive, whoever lasts the longest gets the cash. Problem is he would be Terrible on camera, he does not want to be filmed and is Awkward (but so damn adorable), he would forget he has a camera and is supposed to be filming, forget he's supposed to be talking, it would take him a week to consistently remember the damn thing. But when he does talk it's gorgeous. And if he says any of his poetry oh man.

Unfortunately, he is also 'a bear spat this back out. Sure it's good to eat!' and 'I'm gonna pet that cougar' levels of bad ideas, so not exactly a great survivalist role model. Great tv though.

I want to know more about Maude like does she treat Ezra the way she does because of survival? Her own trauma ? I’m curious

This is a good question and suddenly I’m very curious

Right like why on earth did she even keep Ezra if she was just gonna give him to random families whenever she needed to

I think there are a couple of different options

1) she loved Ezra’s father and thus kept him as a keepsake

2) she saw Ezra as an investment because i feel like his father had a similar proficiency in gambling so like a racehorse Maude decided she would raise him unless he turned out to not be worth the trouble and just ditch him

3) she honestly loves Ezra and doesn’t understand how she treats him is damaging because that’s how she was raised (though I believe her childhood was more rough and tumble

4) she knows how horrible she treats her son and just doesn’t care and continues to use him as a meal ticket

I feel like it’s a mix of 2 and 3. Like she’s spent all those months pregnant with him and raising a baby and teaching him so clearly she deserves a reward, but also she has some maternal instinct and does care about him but has no idea how to show it

I agree, except I also think there’s a little bit of 4 in there, because I think one of the biggest core differences between Maude and Ezra, is that Ezra feels guilt

Ezra fries so hard to be cold and calculating, but we see from the first ep that he can’t help but feel for people

Maude....doesn’t seem to have that problem, I feel like Maude is more.....morally broken? Than Ezra. Ezra knows that the things he does are bad, and clearly has to work to convince himself it’s fine, but Maude genuinely doesn’t see a problem with how she uses people, she behaves like it’s her god-given right to do the things she does.

Basically I’m pretty sure Maude is a clinical Narcissist, and therefore wouldn’t see anything wrong with the way she treats her son

In that case (which is wonderfully well worded) does she

A) not realize she causes him pain

B) not care

C) think she’s teaching necessary lessons

If she’s a Narcissist then it’s absolutely B and C, Clinical Narcissists often genuinely don’t care that they hurt others, because their feelings and well-being supersede anyone else’s, and any pain they cause is justified because it’s in service of their own comfort/ego

And that absolutely screams “Maude” to me

I think that Ezra being a caring person stems from the destruction that Maude has caused. He has seen her leech off men and families he’s stayed with until all that is left is a husk and an empty bank account

And that’s why he was kinda horrified when she showed up at four corners because not only does he know the chaos she can cause with absolutely no guilt but how that can reflect on him (I really think he has been ousted before because of Maude )

Vin literally said he thought that Ezra had been raised by wolves and I think being raised by a narcissist is almost the same thing

Poor Ezra basically spent his entire childhood as a cuckoo chick, his mother perpetually dropping him into other peoples nests and wrecking their lives

And I imagine that when she shows up in Four Corners he also fears that it means he’ll be kicked out of yet another “nest”

That she’ll do so much harm that his new family won’t want anything to do with this horrible woman’s’ son

We want to think about what if this wasn’t the first time in Ezra’s adult life that Maude caused her son to flee a town he had started to see as home

I’m thinking that this was before the war (cause the timeline is fucked) so Ezra is in his late teens like 18 or 19 and he has carved a little place in Georgia where he makes an earnest living (maybe as a bankers assistant or apprentice)

He’s made good friends (for the first time in his life) has become kinda a local (although he is going by A different name ) but he’s happy

Unfortunately he tells Maude this In a letter because he still has a smigen of trust in her

So she arrives and as soon as she sees her boy, who she created to become a conman and expert gambler, as a man with a regular job and only gambles on the odd occasion

Now she might not do it entirely on purpose but it’s pretty malice she starts her regular prefect woman image but over the weeks she’s staying in town she starts her con maybe it’s a donation for orphans maybe it’s a investment scheme (probably both) but either way she gets Ezra involved by having him hold onto the money or collect it and when she finally leaves (with the money in tow ) Ezra’s reputation is ruined and even his friends have turned against him

I one hundred percent believe this happened

And the thing is, I’m willing to bet good money she does this on purpose

Maude sees her son, her product, her creation, thriving somewhere without her, gaining respect and good reputation, and worst of all not needing her at all-

And she can’t have that, he’s not allowed to think he doesn’t need her to make something of him, and god forbid he be happier than her

Like in the episode with the saloon and the hotel, he was doing well for himself, she already knew he was a respected member of society in town, but he was about to also become a respected business owner, with what was likely going to be a very successful saloon without her intervention

So she swanned in, and destroyed it for him, and before leaving she made sure to cover it in the thin guise of a “necessary lesson” that he needed from his much wiser and cleverer mother

Lest he forget himself and make the mistake of trying to do better than her again

This is exactly it like seriously he is a product of child abuse and one of Maudes longest con jobs because she probably made sure to make Ezra completely dependent on her approval and her

Like even as a child if she happened to accidentally leave Ez with a good family who took him in and gave him everything he needed plus a little bit of love (cause I can’t imagine a little blonde child being left on my doorstep who is practically a mini adult and not make sure he feels wanted) but if Maude finds out she will spend as much time as possible to make Ezra believe they actually hated him and they had sent her letters to come get her horrible boy

There is a fantastic series called Annie Greer gets a boy child (or something like that) that is basically all of this in fic

The line that haunts me though is the part where Ezra compares her to a stray cat because that’s how she raised him (though cats usually are extremely loyal to their babies so rip Maude but cats are better)

It begs the question when did Ezra realize he deserves more than what Maude gave him

Because it could have been

1) at the age of 19 when he was packing his belongings and not a single person even looked twice

2) throughout his travels when he sees mothers actually take care of their kids

Or and the more likely option

3) when he met the boys and he got adopted by 6 men

I feel like the process probably started at 2, and 3 really cinched it for him and opened his eyes permanently

Like, I personally like to imagine that after Maude’s second visit, and the shit with the saloon, Chris of all people showed up and checked in on him, because Chris was a parent, and a damn good one, and those paternal instincts are still strong enough in him that he can’t stand to see anyone being a bad parent, and that goes doubly if he happens to have a soft spot for the “kid” in question. (Also he and Vin are the only ones who never seem taken in by Maude in any way, they seem to completely ignore her)

And it really hits Ezra then, because if Mister Larabee, who he likely holds as kind of a paragon of morality, is pissed off at how Maude treats him? Then that means it really is wrong. It’s not just him being “overly sensitive” like Maude used to tell him. If Mister Larabee thinks he deserves better from a mother than he’s been right all along, and suddenly Ezra feels a hundred pounds lighter.

Anyways, and I think that’s why by Maude’s third visit Ezra is so uncompromisingly Done With Her Shit and feels no guilt about arresting her, because he knows now that he owes her nothing but what he decides to give out of the goodness of his heart

Yes all of this yes, I think Ezra really has trouble with his self worth

Like I think he has cofindence and knows he’s good at cards and scamming people even if he feels awful about it

But His self worth is tied to wealth (thanks Maude) so when Maude comes the second time and rips away his business he is at rock bottom and doesn’t believe he deserves anything because he’s got nothing

His self-worth is very surface-level, it’s directly connected to what he can do and provide

And I think a big part of being part of The Seven for him was that he started to believe in his own intrinsic worth, because for the first time he was surrounded by people who cared about him beyond what he could do for them, and who wouldn’t abandon him because of his mother, people who genuinely cared about his health and well-being, and who wanted him to be happy.

I doubt there was anything like forced retirement for Judges in the 1800s, especially given there doesn't seem to be now. But the Judge is getting up there, he's had a rough time of it, etc.

The Seven are out of a job. They'll protect the place of course, they're kind of invested now, but they're not all Ezra, and they feel bad asking him to bankroll the thing when there's no potential profit involved.

I just want the boys to rob trains to pay for their dinners, wandering through collecting change in hats and being polite to ladies and all, grabbing a few useful bits and bobs off the cargo, and buggering off to have naps.

Ezra learning to be affectionate. Learning touching, proximity, back slaps, teasing, what is acceptable, and you can see the wheels turning as he processes data and adjusts his parameters to fit in.

Vin sees what he’s doing and them pooling their resources like some sort of alien anthropologists and they do experiments to figure out what’s appropriate, usually on Buck, because he’s the most forgiving and least likely to look at you funny if you mess it up. Unfortunately, he’s also the one with the smallest personal space bubble and the most physically affectionate, so some of their data is slightly… off.

(This is why Chris jumps about four feet high when Vin unexpectedly slings his arm around his shoulders, and why Josiah’s concerned that Ezra may be coming down with something because did you just slap my back?)
