in all seriousness though a fandom doesn't die when there's no new episodes or games or "content" to play with and it doesn't die because people aren't as loud as the day it first came out either. if you're still creating then the fandom is alive. if your mutual who has since moved on still reblogs a post about it every four months then the fandom is alive. if there is even one person out there still engaging in, creating for, or just enjoying that show or that game or those characters, then the fandom is alive.

"fresh content" isn't the soul of a fandom. you are.

Seven as Lawyers;

Josiah: Old timer who refuses to become a partner. Possibly dabbled in tax law at some point and is now the only one in the firm who knows anything about it so he gets called in whenever it comes up even though he hates it. Also refuses to become a Judge and has an hourly rate that is obscenely low considering how much experience he has, even though this is career 3+. Terrible about making his clients actually pay him. Still prints off his emails.

Ezra: Partner. Dresses like he's going to be in Court every day. Does Not lend his robes. Vacation whore. Secretly emailing his assistant and working as usual like the whole time. Just in Vegas. If he gets called on it he'll call it a working vacation or say something urgent came up, he will Not admit he actually gives a damn. Loves Court. Judges hate him (except Travis).

Buck: Family Law. His clients think he's a sweetheart and wonder if he really has enough teeth to get what they want. His clients exes think he's kind of an idiot. The other lawyers know he is Not. Has been called out for being dramatic by a judge in court and possibly in writing and does not care. Has never met a text message he wasn't willing to put in an affidavit. Totally cool with having his clients bring kids to signing appointments.

Vin: That guy who knows All the caselaw. (bc he had to read those judgments once and he was Not going through them again). If you need a precedent in his area, just ask and he will spit out three names and save you six hours. Loves talk to text and uses his standing desk exclusively. Also dresses worse than his assistant and avoids Court at all costs, to the extent of bribing other lawyers to go for him and possibly arranging his vacations Just So. No one knows where he is half the time. Treats his assistant like she's made of gold.

JD: bb lawyer. Asks the assistants what to do at least three times a day. They think he's adorable. Always happy to help draft a brief or research memo or dig into precedents, which everyone else really appreciates. Will panic about filing and serving deadlines even after he's told that is not entirely his responsibility and only some of them are real. Judges intimidate him and the other lawyers pointing out that Judge Travis used to work here does nothing to ease the fear.

Nathan: One of the few truly organized lawyers in the office. Cleanest desk, his files are actually correctly alphabetized, and is the most prompt about filing withdrawals and closing files. Does his own time entries and cc's his assistant on everything necessary and is very good about uploading files to the internal system. His calendar is colour-coded and has weekly reminders of deadlines. Has Never missed filing a Brief on time. Helps Buck with the Family stuff the most. Has been paid with artwork done by small children several times.

Chris: Will not touch Family Law with a ten foot pole but wishes Buck luck before Court. Mostly deals with employment and civil matters, but has dabbled in criminal. Despises Briefs and long Affidavits. Brutally concise and has a reputation for efficiency. Never bothers to upload documents to the internal file sharing system, his assistant got access to his inbox for just this reason. Also terrible about putting things in his calendar.

This is a prison made horsehair bridle with matching reins, c1910. I believe it was made in Deer Lodge State Prison, MT. They were used by Wild West Showmen, for parades and mostly as wall art.

The craft of hitching horsehair into colorful bridles flourished in the prisons of 12 western states from about 1885 through the early 1930s. Horses were always kept on the prison farms, so most of the required materials were inexpensive and available. Hitched and braided horsehair pieces were created by hand without the benefit of any special tools and could be made in the confines of a small cell. The inmates had the time to devote to this folk art, which required focus and attention to detail for long periods.

By producing pieces that would sell “on the outside” for a good price, inmates could earn money for tobacco or to save for their release. One hundred years ago, these bridles would sell for $50 to $100 each in 1900.

In hitching, a series of horsehair pulls, or strands, is knotted over string that is wound around a wooden dowel. The dowel provides something sturdy to hitch over and provides shape for the item to be hitched — usually in geometric patterns based on a diamond shape.

Each of the Western prisons had its own style of bridle with unique colors and patterns, along with different styles of tassels and rosettes. Inmates at Arizona’s Florence State Prison — completed in 1908 to replace the territorial prison in Yuma — made the most original bridles, which employed bright colors and different types of knots. At Montana’s territorial prison in Deer Lodge, inmates put text or numbers on bridles. Wyoming prisoners utilized a combination of braided calfskin and hitched horsehair. Cañon City, Colorado, inmates braided their bridles and made their own bits.

Today the tradition is kept alive by the inmates of Montana State Prison, horsehair bridles, belts and hatbands are for sale in the prison craft store in Deer Lodge. - Bill Mans

The boys as people who call in to my work (I work at a law firm and do intake calls)

JD: Stressed. Rambler. Timeline? Unclear. A lot of extraneous information included, but he mostly gets there eventually. I have made three pages of notes. The resulting email is nine paragraphs minimum, and that's with pruning.

Buck: Also rambler, but less likely to take a tangent. Very cheerful given the situation. Most likely to be calling to help out a friend, but if he's calling for a friend he will have to make notes about what info he needs and call back again later, he did Not think to ask questions ahead of time.

Chris and Nathan: Answer my questions with the appropriate amount of elaboration. Both use the military alphabet when spelling things and I love them for it. Neither call while driving and the background noise is nonexistent.

Josiah: starts his answers with "well that would depend" more often than I would like, but to be fair the information is pertinent.

Vin: Answers my questions ONLY. Despises that I ask him to spell things, possibly enough to hang up. Also doesn't want to give me his email address.

Ezra: doesn't have to call a fucking lawyer he's already got one obviously.

More inadvisable ways to introduce a new player character mid-dungeon, bait and switch edition:

A new character with almost but not quite identical stats and appearance comes hurrying up to the party, insisting that you’re the real [name], and the [name] everyone knew was an imposter; when informed that they died just before you arrived, cryptically remark that this isn’t the first time they’ve pulled that trick

A character who nobody recognises speaks up from the party’s midst, acting like they expect to be familiar to the party; if questioned, claim that you’re the deceased character’s personal assistant, and that you’ve been here the entire time, then digress into a rant about how nobody every notices the help

Following the next encounter, the party discovers a large, ornate treasure chest, which proves to contain nothing but your character, bound and gagged; once released, any complaint regarding the lack of gold and jewels should naturally be met with dramatic indignation at the implication that you’re not treasure enough

The target the party has been sent to slay unexpectedly greets them warmly, explaining there’s been an awful misunderstanding: you’re not the true master of the dungeon, you’ve just been mistaken for the prophesied Lord of Evil, and you’d very much like to make your exit before the monsters figure it out

[Spellcaster only] Your original character is revealed upon death to be a fraud with no magical powers, who had merely been impersonating a member of their ostensible character class; any spell effects you seemed to produce in fact originated from a heretofore-unsuspected accomplice: your horse

Fantasy setting? Ezra has tried any and all of these. They work way more often than they should, he has opinions about adventurer's self-preservation vis a vis randomly appearing strangers.

Ezra communicates exclusively with Column B unless things are... Quite Bad.

Several of the other boys are incapable of speaking Column B, and use Column A in even the worst situations.

This may have caused some issues.

Turns OUT that discovering your Masters paperwork has been fucked up, finding and getting a new apartment, moving, being screwed over by Fedex at every turn, in 30C(90F) heat on a couple hours sleep/night is actually MORE stressful than an entire Masters degree. Who knew???

sorry but someone assuming you have "left a fandom" when you don't post about it a lot anymore feels like bilbo coming home to the sackville bagginses having him presumed dead and selling all his stuff. girl i was just on a little quest????

One of my problems is I read too fast, and often have to re-read bc I didn't actually absorb any of it. This is especially bad with scholarly articles. Picturing Josiah giving a lecture on the topic I'm reading about hasn't entirely solved the problem, but it has helped.

good morning dirtbag nation last night I cowboy camped up on a ridgeline tucked beneath hemlock saplings right alongside one of those big intermountain power lines that look like giant men walking across the mountain tops. the wires were so close that there was a constant crackling hum of electricity that almost disguised the sound of the rain pit-pattering on my tarp. when the water hit the cables it made hot blue flashes like little lightning birds on the wire, and you could almost track the sheets of wind in the darkness because of the ripples of light.
