TASK N.03 (b) â Thinking About the Future
Itâs obvious to Septima, and it has been for a long time, that she wants to do something with Arithmancy when she leaves Hogwarts. She is passionate with the research and the academia of it, all the unexplored possibilities that bristle within her whenever she gets into a particularly conversation with Professor Howard. Sheâs also found herself to be a caring tutor to younger students, actually investing herself in trying to make them see different subjects with the same excitement sheâd had when sheâd first started Hogwarts. Because of these reasons, as well as the fact that both her parents are muggle Professors and sheâs grown up surrounded by the academic world, teaching Arithmancy has become an obvious career choice for her over the past few years. She thinks it could insure a stable and ever-challenging future in which sheâd spend her days making sense of the mysteries of their world to wide eyed and eager young people. Because she is ambitious and dedicated, she sees herself teaching at any of the most prestigious institutions for magic â although this could be anywhere in the world that strikes her fancy.Â
But at the same time, she also feels this restlessness in her; this hunger to see the world, to travel and learn and make a difference (and also, at times, to escape the stifling atmosphere she feels growing in Britain). While sheâs not one to go out seeking danger and thrills, she doesnât know yet if a life sitting at a desk would be quite right for her, either. It was talking about her dilemma to Professor Howard that gave her an idea she hasnât been able to get out of her mind since. Even if she wants to be a Professor, in order to get a job at a place like Hogwarts, she will need experience and opportunity. Experience, because no matter how brilliant she is, no one will want to hire an eighteen-year-old to teach highly dangerous material and look after teenagers when the worldâs best wizards are trying to get a seat at the Hogwarts table. Opportunity, because there are only so many high end institutions out there, and once Professors get a position, they usually stay there until they canât teach anymore. Howard likes to joke with her that as much as he believes in her, heâs not ready to give up his own seat anytime soon.Â
Her best bet yet might be to take a few years to assuage her thirst and go out into the world. Explore all the principles of Arithmancy sheâs always wanted to see used in real life; find ways to combine her Potions knowledge and her Charms skills; mould herself into the kind of witch people have heard of before she even walks into the classroom. It would tick every box for her, allow her to escape for a while, challenge herself and learn from the best, while also turning her into a good investment for whichever magical academy sheâll set her eyes on when sheâs ready to return. Maybe write a few books, discover a new spell, coin a new Potion, and once sheâs seen enough of the world, come back home to pass all sheâs learnt to younger generations. Sheâs thinking freelance, so she can move around. Curse-breaker, maybe, or potions and charms consultant, if she needs a title. Maybe sheâll simply build herself a reputation so that people know when they have a particularly tricky magical situation to handle, sheâs the one to call. In terms of school, that means that she is focusing on classes but not so much on grades. She wants to learn all she can and be as prepared as possible; but if sheâs planning on seeing the world and being freelance, her transcripts wonât really matter. Which is why sheâs been putting more of her time and energy in side projects and extra research, trying to mould herself into the more competent and multidisciplinary witch of her age.Â
