“Wake up! Wake up! It’s just a dream!” “What were you dreaming about…? You were shouting…” “I woke up because you were screaming so loudly.” “Shh– No, no, don’t panic, love. You’re safe now.” “It was so real! I swear! He/she was here!” “I don’t ever want to sleep again. What if– what if I dream about that again?” “If you tell me, it’ll go away. That’s what my mum/dad always told me and it’s never failed me.” “Do you want to go back to sleep, or shall I make you a cup of tea?” “I don’t want to go back to sleep…” “I’m so scared… I can’t stop seeing what I just saw. It was so vivid!” “There’s really nobody here, okay? Do you need me to show you around to prove that to you?” “How do I know I’m not still dreaming? You’re acting really strangely.” “Let’s get you to the shower, you’re covered in sweat.” “There’s really nobody else here.” “You’ve got a really bad fever. That must have caused those weird dreams.” “I don’t even know what a peaceful night’s sleep is like anymore.” “I can’t do this anymore. These nightmares have to stop…” “Shh, it was just a bad dream. Just a dream, okay? None of it was real.” “I can’t go back to sleep after that. I need coffee– no, I need a drink, a stiff one.” “How long have you been having these nightmares?” “I’ve had nightmares all my life, but they’ve been really bad recently.” “You get so worked up before you go to sleep, maybe you should try to relax a bit more. Maybe then you’ll get some rest?” “I’d kill for a peaceful night’s sleep.” “A dream catcher? Honestly? I’m not a child.” “Nothing’s ever helped this. I just need to learn to live with the fact that sleeping will always be a nightmare, literally.” “I’m so tired… but there’s no way I’m going back to sleep after that.”
kuroomata:
“As long as you keep the braid thin, you’d be able to braid it.”
Kuroo would reach over, beginning to gently card his fingers through Konoha’s blond strands. He’d turn a little, eyes narrowing as he examined how long it really was from root to end. He’d also mentally note, that it was quite soft, this being partially why he’d continue neatening Akinori’s regardless of not needing to have the contact. Kuroo had such a weakness to soft things–
“I meant that, yeah. Books, movies, shows, games. That sort of thing.”
He’d give a roll of his eyes, he’d thought that everyone knew what that dreaded genre was. It was term more recently coined in though, so maybe it hadn’t caught on to everyone yet.
“A romcom is basically a romantic comedy, you know, all the pointless cliches, and slapstick comedy that any girl could ever want.”
And maybe some guys too, if they were into that sort of thing. Kuroo liked to steer clear of those movies though. However, he did have to add.
“You like mysteries too– ?? I enjoy learning about the mysteries of the earth, like what’s under the ocean, or strange things that happen but no-one can explain.”
He’d leave that there before he went off on an embarrassingly excited rant about it. Yeah, time to think about his own answer for that question. He’d pause for a moment to think, of the options given, he’d have to say that he could really be any one of them, depending on his mood and the situation. Yet, he’d only be able to pick one; this had him narrowing his eyes and almost pouting with how much he was concentrating on thinking.
“I guess I’d have to say dawn, I mean yeah, you wake up and everything sucks because you want to stay in bed sometimes, but—— I like knowing I have a whole day ahead of me, and I have the possibility to do so many things.”
It was kind of fun to think about things like this, things he’d automatically go about doing but would never think about in any depth. You’d never question it until someone else asked, he supposed. Still, he’d have to think of another question to ask, he wasn’t sure what to go for when they knew so little at this point.
“Hmm—- Oh, what do you want for your birthday– ?? That’s coming up pretty soon, right– ?? “
Konoha caught himself just in time before he jerked in surprise at feeling Kuroo’s fingers against his hair. His touch was soft - and it was something he found unexpected about the captain whose personality was more often rough than gentle. But looking at him now, he had to admit that he does have that side - no matter how hidden.
“Are you telling me you actually know how to braid?”
Why he was nonchalantly showing him this side of him though, Konoha could only guess. It was probably a hard to grasp concept for someone who kept his own personality under a secure hold.
Carelessly dropping your guard like that around people you barely know might get you in trouble one day, Kuroo.
Well, not that he’d say something like that out loud.
As for his response to his question, Konoha decided that the Nekoma captain was quite the optimistic one. If he was asked the same question, dawn would be his least choice - being one to prefer the night and quiet. He liked it better once the day winds down and gives way into the silence and stillness of the night.
His gaze, which had traveled momentarily to window - not that he saw much through the blanket he draped over it, flickered back to Kuroo at the mention of his birthday. His eyes widened ever so slightly in surprise. His lips parted for a moment but had to close them again as he tried to find the right words to form a sentence, forehead creasing just slightly in confusion.
“I-- I dont know.”
Truth be told, he didnt expect that many people - aside from his team, he supposed - to know when his birthday was. Even still, he did not expect anything for his birthday. It was just a regular day for him, as far as he was concerned. So to be asked about what he wanted for a gift was something that caught him off guard.
“Im not really one for gifts, I suppose. How did you even know about my birthday anyway?”

kuroomata:
“It’s an all-round fun activity, and hey, girls at sleepovers could be girlfriends, who knows. Depends entirely on the girls in question.”
He’d pause, a laugh escaping him at the thought of someone braiding his hair, the braid would probably end up sticking back up with the rest of it. Unless they braided his bangs. No thanks, he’d rather not look like a weirdo.
“Nah, you’d look prettier with the braid. Like, totally.”
He was only playing around of course, thinking a lighter atmosphere would help Akinori relax a little. Seeing him bunched up and curled in fetal position like that was sad. Still, the answer he was being given was interesting enough, nothing out of the ordinary mind you, but it wasn’t the usual talk about how it felt like he was destined to do it, or he wanted to follow in someone’s footsteps.
“ Hmm— No volleyball, huh– ?? “
Now that was a possibility that Kuroo had never thought of, since he’d been playing volleyball a vast majority of his life, and it took up most of his time. He already took part in other after school clubs, whatever took him away from the house he once called a home was fair game.
“I wouldn’t wanna do anything cliche, like basketball, or baseball. I’d probably just invest more time in street dance, or music. I always put those off for volleyball if schedules clash, y’know- ??”
He’d nod, yeah, that would be about right, but he was thankful that he’d gotten into volleyball all the same. He’d glance up at the ceiling in thought, before looking at Konoha with an inquisitive gaze.
“What is your preferred genre over all– ?? You don’t strike me as the type to enjoy a rom-com.”
“My hair isnt long enough to be braided.”
It was just added as an afterthought - though he pointedly ignored the part where he called him pretty. He was not falling for that bait so, good luck to him.
As for Kuroo’s answer to his question, it would be a lie to say that his curiosity wasnt piqued in the least. Kuroo dancing though - it wasnt an image his mind could so easily conjure. He couldnt quite imagine it but with the way the other’s body was built, those lean limbs would probably do good with dancing. Well, not that he would know.
“Dancing huh? I never would’ve thought.”
Just as the nature of the game demanded, Konoha had to drop the previous topic as Kuroo threw the next question at him. Though - he had to replay the question repeatedly in his mind to try and make sense out of it. He wasnt quite sure if it was because he was still somehow distracted by the ongoing storm or maybe it was the way the question was phrased but - he couldnt quiet get himself to answer it.
“Preferred genre in what? What are you talking about? Books? Movies? What even is a rom-com?”
He had to admit, the term was not familiar to him - he may have heard it mentioned several times but he never really paid attention to it - more so to look up it’s definition.
“Assuming youre talking about books, or movies - I suppose I’d say suspense. Or something that gets my mind working. Mysteries - and the like. I do like history and mythology as well.”
A pause. Enough to give him a moment to think. For some reason, he found it hard to think of a question worth asking. He didnt want to throw any cliche questions but he supposed it was a good start as any. Let it develop from there maybe.
“Are you a dawn, sunset, or midnight kind of person?”
kuroomata:
“Not if you use them like shurikens.”
But maybe throwing cards at people like ninja weapons in the pitch darkness wasn’t the best of ideas. Ah, forget that idea then, but left them with little options. Plus, that was more of a thing he’d end up doing with Bokuto.
Kuroo would snort, though it was said with sarcasm, it wasn’t the worst of ideas. Though upon thinking about girl’s sleep overs and the mysteries and myths surrounding them, Kuroo could help but get in a small jab.
“Does that mean you want me to braid your hair and then we can make out later– ??”
He’d ask with a teasing lilt. That was a tale that many males had told, and girls had often agreed to. Though whether that was a tease or the truth was still a mystery. Kuroo didn’t really care all that much, why do all those things when you could be sleeping instead. Well, either way, he might as well go along with this 21 questions idea.
“Okay. Why do you play volleyball- ?? Answer that, then ask me a question.”
They might as well go back and forth, that way both of them could be equally distracted for the night. Hopefully. The storm had the odd moments of being able to catch his attention, be it a particularly bright flash, or loud boom. Kuroo would only give it a glance though, keeping his eyes on Akinori instead, since he was a lot more interesting.
The urge to roll his eyes was too strong to go against - so he gave in. He should’ve expected that one, his eyebrow twitching once in annoyance. Well, at least this Kuroo was more familiar to him than the responsible captain who had seen him earlier to his room. He allowed himself to slip into a more comfortable personality to meet Kuroo’s own.
“You’re telling me girls make out during sleep over? Besides, if anyone’s hair is getting braided here, it’s yours.”
Comparing their hair, Konoha judged that should Kuroo’s hair lay flat, it would be an inch or two longer than his. So there’s that. He promptly ignored the cat’s previous statement as he moved his attention to the one question he could actually answer.
“I started playing during middle school. It was just a thing to waste my time on at first. I didnt want to play basketball, or baseball, or soccer - too much running. But I guess it grew on me so, here I am.”
There was nothing exciting about his getting involved with volleyball. No “eureka” moment. No genius strings at work. No dramatic “this is what I’m meant to do” realizations. It was simply a hobby that he turned out to be good at and something he enjoyed doing. He dropped the topic there and decided that it was a good enough answer before turning his gaze back on Kuroo’s silhouette beside him, his eyes barely making out the features of his face in the shadows. Thinking of a question--
“If you didnt get into volleyball, what else do you see yourself doing?”
kuroomata:
“Heyo~~ !! Hope you don’t mind, I got seriously bored out there.”
He’d offer, almost as a form of apology as he opened the door to Konoha’s room and slipped inside. He contemplated asking him if he was alright, tucked up against himself like that, but thought against it. The door would be gently pushed to a close, his footsteps almost soundless against the howling of the wind as he’d slink over to the blond.
“You’re looking a little bored yourself,”
he’d notice, parking himself to a seat right next to Akinori. He didn’t blame the spiker for being in such a way, with anxiety high and little to distract from it all. Maybe having the captain there would help with taking his mind off of everything. If nothing else worked, he could always sing again, though, perhaps a better song.
“It wouldn’t be so bad if we had a pack of cards or something.”
Kuroo would muse, a lot of entertainment was digital these days. If they were lucky, maybe the electricity would come back on before morning. His thought therein would be cut completely short, the crashing of thunder not only sounded like it was right on top of them, but had also lightly shook the building. Kuroo started to think that maybe even practice might be postponed tomorrow. Though he certainly hoped not.
Weather could be pretty cruel to one’s schedule. With a sigh, the third year would shuffle a little closer, bumping their shoulders together gently as an offer of support and comfort. Being fearful of storms wasn’t fun, but being scared of storms whilst being caught in one like this——- Kuroo really did feel for the poor owl.
“Me? Bored? I was trying so hard to hide it.”
Konoha’s eyes followed Kuroo as he sat down beside him, not really minding it anymore since they had, after all, spent some time together just a few hours ago. A sound that was half a scoff and half a chuckle escaped the blond’s lips at the mention of cards.
“A pack of cards would just as useless, Kuroo-san. It’s hard enough to see in the dark. It’ll be too easy to cheat as well--”
The rest of his words were drowned as a crash of thunder came down upon them, causing the blond to press his lips down together tightly, teeth grinding against each other. He took a deep breath and tried to loosen the fingers that had suddenly curled painfully into his own sleeves.
Was it really too much for the thunder to lessen even just a bit?
Closing his eyes for a moment, Konoha released his breath in a deep sigh - a groan of annoyance towards the weather sounding from deep within his throat. He didnt keep his eyes close for long though, not after he felt Kuroo bump his shoulder against his. He turned his face towards the other, slightly surprised at the sudden proximity - though the only reaction he showed was a raise of a brow.
He let out a small huff before turning away and placing his chin back down on his knees which he still held close to himself.
“Well, you said you wanted to know more about me. Lets play 21 questions like school girls in a sleepover. Fun.”
The sarcasm in his voice was thick on that last word.
– Suga pulled a clean shirt over his head and glanced back at Konoha. “Not at all," he replied, I’m glad I can help a guy in need." He put a light vest on, grabbed his wallet and lead the other out. If they were going for food there were some options, but maybe it would be good to just get stuff from the convenience store nearby. Either way, the choice was up to his guest. “We could go for ramen or a family restaurant, but if you’re tight on money the convenience store carries some nice dinner sets too.” Once outside, Suga could feel that the fresh air made him feel less drowsy. He actually enjoyed having someone new over, since usually it was just Daichi and Asahi coming over to study.
“Is there a ramen shop open at this time? That would be nice I guess, but if a convenience store is nearer, that’s fine for me too.”
It was a cold night - compared to Tokyo, Miyagi had a lower temperature than what he was used to and he wouldnt mind the extra heat that ramen could provide him with. But he also did not want to impose any more than he already was on the other male. It didnt help that they really arent any more than mere acquaintances. Maybe it wouldnt hurt to try and get to know the Karasuno setter - he supposed.
“Well, you know the area better. You can lead me anywhere you want. Tell me about Miyagi - a verbal tour if you want to call it that.”
That last statement of his had an amused lilt in his voice - as if he wasnt quite sure to deliver it as a joke or not. While he was no stranger to Miyagi - he would admit that he’d only been to the area for very specific reasons - but as a whole, he did not know what the prefecture offered. It could be a good topic for a conversation. Well, volleyball could always be a good common ground between them but Konoha didnt think Sugawara would appreciate talking about it even during day offs.
reliefpitchernori:
Nori turned around confused when he heard the statement from the person watching. Nori didn’t think he’d seen them before…but then again, it wasn’t as if he was intimately familiar with everyone who came to watch their games or anything. Turning back to the stranger he asked, “pardon, I’m not fully sure what you are saying is a long run? All baseball is played with a field this large?”
“Yes. I mean, to get just one point - it takes such a long time. It looks complicated to me. And it falls apart so easily with those outs. Isnt it frustrating?”
He was aware that he was talking to a baseball player and his words would either paint him ignorant or insulting. But he was honest in his words. From a volleyball player’s point of view where getting a point is as simple as getting the other team to drop the ball, baseball in comparison seemed to require a lot more effort. From batting, to running to one base to another and another until you do a full run - all under the heat of the sun, was not an enjoyable scenario to simulate in one’s head. Not to say that volleyball was a simple game - but at least it didnt require running how many meters - only to be stopped midway - if youre lucky even - some of the players get blocked before the first base. Not to mention its so easy to lose sight of such a small ball in a big field.
kuroomata:
Kuroo did indeed pause, expecting Konoha to make some offhanded remark about wet cats, or something of that nature. Hearing him instead being so concerned for his well being, was actually rather touching.
He would quietly listen to all Konoha had to say, somewhat at a loss for words until he’d finally hear the offer given by the spiker. “Alright– “ He’d mumble, waiting until Akinori had gone into his room before shaking his head and starting off down the hallway once again. It was a strange and interesting twist of events, he’d contently muse, lost in thought as he slowly slinked his way along the darkened halls, the occasional flash the only light he’d be allowed.
The captain found himself thinking about many things, as per the norm. Volleyball being at the forefront of his mind, though they’d sometimes drift to Konoha instead, whether he was alright on his own, and also how he got his hair so neat.
It had been a while since he’d started his little journey across the dorms, and eventually, he’d obviously become somewhat bored. Eyes would glance to the window, seeing almost nothing but the cascade of cold rain that was being pelted against the glass. Ah, maybe he would take up that offer after all. Or at least check on him– Yeah.
It wouldn’t take him long to wind his way back to the door, though he’d hesitate for a moment.
“Hey—- Konoha, you awake— ??”
He’d quietly ask through the door with a gentle knock. If he did manage to fall to sleep, Kuroo certainly wouldn’t wish to wake him back up.
The room was too big for him - or maybe it was just too empty. There was a dresser at one side of the room, along with a mirror. Konoha had gone ahead and draped his Fukurodani jacket over the mirror. It wasnt as if that he was scared of seeing anything in it - he just didnt like the additional flashes of lightning that reflected on it.
Konoha had settled on the bed - though he did not lay on it. Sleep would not come for him - not when the storm raged outside his window. Despite how much he needed as much blankets as was available to him, he had spared one blanket and tried his best to drape it over the window. Any attempt of lessening the bright flashes of lightning that caused him to jump out of his skin was good enough for him.
The blond sat, hugging his knees to his chest as he stared into nothing. His mind randomly picking up sounds outside his room in an attempt to distract himself. Sometimes he’d focus on the way the wind whistled as it made its rounds around the building. Sometimes he heard the rustling of leaves as it struggled to keep themselves attached to their tree. Several times, he thought he heard branches split off and blown against his window, making it rattle. Or maybe it was just the wind, he wasnt sure.
His phone rested before his feet. He had read several messages from Akaashi - asking him where he was. Apparently, the Fukurodani setter had checked in his room earlier and found him gone. He had already responded a few minutes ago that he was safe and settled in - which was quickly followed by another message from Akaashi. He chose not to reply in an attempt to conserve his battery. He no longer received any messages after that.
But that left him with nothing else to do.
He was already contemplating draining his battery by playing a game on his phone when he heard a knock on his door - followed by the voice of the Nekoma captain. So he did return. Konoha lifted his head just enough to respond - loud enough to be heard beyond the closed door.
“I’m here. Door’s open.”
