A Sparkly Birthday Dress with Hidden Ribbon Detail. This dress is based on the pattern in new book from #OliverandS. The bodice and sleeves were designed using the pattern block provided. The skirt is simply a gathered rectangle of sequinned fabric. Ribbons sewn into the shoulders of stretch fabric will stabilise seams and prevent them from over-stretching. Pieces of coordinating denim-style ribbon from www.janemeans.com were stitched directly on the shoulder seams with a long straight stitch.

Using Ribbon to Create Hidden Dress Details: A school uniform is a lot more fun to wear when there are personal secret details sewn inside. This school uniform is sewn in navy linen, from the #Oliver+S Seashore dress pattern, with the front skirt gathers omitted. The front and back neck facings are sewn from viscose cat fabric, and all the raw edges and seams are enclosed by gingham bias binding. The bound pockets needed to be anchored to the dress and a red and cream Jane Means stitched ribbon matched perfectly (www.janemeans.com). This was sewn to the pocket and then attached to the dress seams. The hem is faced with Farbenmix.com woodland print ribbon.

Girl's Cape with Ribbon Details: Ribbon can be used for finishing details and to make garments more comfortable to wear. This months Burdastyle magazine 10/2016 has a fabulous cape pattern. I adapted the pattern by adding curves to the hem of this floral, fleece cape. The centre front opening is neatly finished with an orange and yellow striped ribbon from Jane Means, folded to create the opening. (www.janemeans.com) A green cotton Jane Means ribbon was sewn over the joining seam of the hood and cape to give a comfortable finish to the neckline. This ribbon is a particularly soft cotton which is perfect to cover the neckline seam. It also created the green ribbon ties.

Mending with Ribbons When the back of my daughter's music box came apart, we were sure it couldn't be saved. That is until we found a perfectly co-ordinating blue stitched ribbon from www.janemeans.com This was glued carefully to cover the torn pieces of lining. Despite our wobbly first attempt at gluing ribbon, it looks like it was made just for this music box.

A homemade #guitarstrap with ribbon for structure & support. Sew a guitar strap: Measure length and allow for standing guitar playing. Select a solid fabric, such as denim or other medium to heavy-weight cotton. Add interfacing. Sew the double-width fabric to the width of the d-rings or other selected fabric connectors, attaching leather ends for the guitar (an old leather belt can be used) as in the pictures. To strengthen the strap and reinforce seams in the fabric, sew a ribbon (like this red denim-style ribbon from www.janemeans.com) along the whole length of the strap. Thread the strap through the connectors and sew securely.

#KidsOOTD Only one thing to do when we get a heatwave in Ireland (yes, 2 days of sunshine is a heatwave!) This very easy and quickly sewn top is adapted from the #BrooklynTankTop from the book 'Sewing Clothes Kids Love'. Ribbon is used for the front and back trim. This dog ribbon is from www.janemeans.com and works perfectly with the crazy cow knit fabric. The shoulder strap ribbing is from www.dressfabrics.ie an Irish fabric shop.

Resizing a dress by extending side seams: This dress was sewn as a wearable muslin for my daughters communion dress last year. It needed to be loosened just a little this year. Flat-felled seams were unpicked on both sides and a very small seam sewn on the outside. Dark green stitched ribbons from www.janemeans.com were sewn over the seam to hide the stitching and add an interesting focus to the dress.

Cozy Hot-Water Bottle Covers for Chilly Spring Evenings These easy hot water bottle covers are a quick sewing project. Draw or chalk around the hot-water bottle on paper or directly on the fleece fabric allowing for seams and extra 3cm around the top opening. Cut out the front. Cut out the back in two fabric pieces and allow 5cm extra for overlap and hems on each piece. Sew these hems first. With right sides together place the overlapping back pieces on the front piece & sew all around. Turn right side out. Sewing lengths of ribbon into the shoulder seam adds a focal point especially if the dress is a plain colour. The ribbon can then be left loose, plaited or tied into a bow. Ribbon Piping: An unusual use for ribbons in sewing and dressmaking. Ribbons add interesting detail and texture to piping instead of the traditional bias binding and cord. Pink spotted Jane means ribbon (www.janemeans.com) is folded in half and sewn into the seam allowance. It is possible to use this technique on any straight seam, though it will also work on gentle curves. The minimum width of the ribbon should be 2cm for piping and a wider ribbon is easier to position and sew correctly.

The unusual double ribbon effect is created by sewing two overlapping stitched ribbon edges with a narrow & short zig-zag stitch. This holds the ribbons together securely so that they can be used as a design element or finishing touch on many different sewn items. It is also a useful technique when a project calls for a wide ribbon.
