Who is Miguel Lopez?
Miguel is the POV character of the story, a Cadet who has just been transferred to Tank Corps and Sex Corps after he suffered an injury that disqualified him from continuing with Jet Corps.
Miguel moved up to the United States from Mexico City when he joined the military via the National Service Act in 1975 at the age of sixteen. He is a psychic and a self-taught hypnotist.
Miguel's psychic abilities include telekinesis, especially when in gestalt with large machines (such as jets and tanks!). He also has telepathic abilities and can sense general psychic activity. A rare gift he has is an intuition for which food he would like and what effects it might have on him, a gift he really needs to start employing a lot more in the mess hall these days. He is also good at ingredient analysis. One could also say he's just generally lucky, although it depends on what your definition of "luck" is.
He has a twin brother, Manuel, who is staying in Mexico with a year-long medical deferment to recover from surgery. A lot of Miguel's focus is on helping his brother get the right doctors and medical treatment when he moves up. Miguel is cis and Manuel is trans. They are telepathically connected, but Miguel still makes sure to write home as well.
When the story begins, Miguel does not have any friends in either Corps because he just transferred, but he is eager to make some. He is a very social person but his eagerness can get in his way, and he often puts his foot in his mouth. He tries to make the most of any situation even if he's got a bit of trouble with focus. Miguel is also bisexual, which means he has all of humanity to put his foot in his mouth in front of.
Miguel wants to find out what he's good at now that he can't fly anymore, and he's always willing to experiment to find out more about himself and the world around him. And all of his experiments will go exactly as he plans.
