The former capital of the Inca Empire from the 13th century until the Spanish conquest in 1533. The city sits at about 3400 meters above sea level. The Incas built walls with stones perfectly fitted together without mortar, some blocks weigh dozens of tons and can withstand earthquakes. In the center stood Coricancha, a temple dedicated to the sun god Inti, later a monastery was built on its foundations.

Nearby is Sacsayhuamán, a fortress known for its massive stone walls. Cusco became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
