Chapter 1

This is my first fanfic ever. Nothing here is 100% canon; the events of this story simply take place in the Avengers universe. English is not my first language, so I apologize in advance for any mistakes. I’ve written the first few chapters and will be publishing regularly. As someone who loves true enemies-to-lovers and slow burn, the story will develop slowly, but it will be worth it! Chapter one coming soon! Happy reading!

Prologue

I never saw it coming—how could I? I was only ten. My older sister and I were huddled in the corner of the orphanage when he appeared. A man in a mask, his metal arm slick with blood. His lifeless eyes swept over us as if we were nothing. I couldn’t look away, my gaze locked on him until the sound of a gunshot shattered the air. My sister’s arms, once wrapped tightly around me, fell limp.

“Leave the last one alive, Soldat,” were the final words I heard before everything went black.

I drifted into a dream, but it wasn’t the nightmare you’d expect. I dreamed of an angel, lifting me so high that even the devil couldn’t reach me. When I woke up, I wasn’t in the danger I feared.

A man with an eyepatch stood over me, his expression calm yet firm. “Everything will be okay now,” he said. “You can rest.”

And as his words settled over me, my eyes grew heavy once more, and I let the darkness take me again.
