The city of San Francisco declares May 5th, 2015 to be “Ron Turner Day”.
It’s official!
Thanks to everyone who came to our Celebration of Underground Comics on Tuesday, May 5, as part of the inaugural San Francisco Comics Fest week!
The audience was in for a surprise, with museum Executive Director Summerlea Kashar’s announcement it was actually a secret awards ceremony for Underground comics publishing legend Ronald Edward Turner of Last Gasp Books!
Turner became the latest recipient of the Cartoon Art Museum’s Sparky Award, and May 5 was named “Ron Turner Day” in San Francisco by an official proclamation of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors! Congratulations, Ron Turner!
Congratulations to Ron Turner, and start making your plans for how to best celebrate Ron Turner Day next year! (Hint: read some underground comics!)
EXCLUSIVE: Ben Hatke Shares the Love for Kids Comics with CBLDF!
Today we are celebrating Free Comic Book Day, and with it, the launch of Children’s Book Week! Friend of the Fund Ben Hatke, creator of Zita the Spacegirl, took a moment to share his thoughts on kids comics exclusively with CBLDF, and he did so using the format we all love so much — with a comic!
Did you know that, along with this being San Francisco Comics Fest week, it’s also Children’s Book Week?
Free Comic Book Day was a blast!
Gail Simone was at Fantastic Comics in Berkeley, graciously posed with me and Jenn Croft (Lara) for photos and signed autographs. We were also able to pick up some awesome fun comics and meet Spider Gwen, Black Canary and Thor! There were even some extra young heroines in attendance but they were too shy to take pictures ;)
This was amazing. The comic book world is full of such amazing, inspiring and wonderful people! Such a great day.
I met gailsimone!!!

Not only are we excited to have Gail signing with us at Fantastic Comics for FCBD, we are THRILLED that she will also be joining us for our Fantastic Ladies Comics Club meeting the next day!
For Sunday, May 3rd we will be reading: RED SONJA: Queen of Plagues, vol. 1 by Gail Simone and Walter Geovani
Red Sonja, the Hyrkanian She-Devil with a sword, must pay back a blood debt…even if it means leading a doomed army to their certain deaths. An epic tale of blood, lust, and vengeance, Queen of Plagues takes Red Sonja from the depths of her own grave to the heights of battlefield glory.
Gail Simone will be at Fantastic Comics the day before doing a signing for our Free Comic Book Day Event, and she will be attending this meeting with us for an in-person Q&A! We’re all very excited to have her here. We will be starting the meeting a half hour earlier than our usual time, starting at 7PM and ending at 8:30.
This meeting is open to women attendees only, including LGBT+ and nonbinary identified adults. We are wheelchair accessible and happy to welcome new readers as well as life-long comic book fans.
We meet at Fantastic Comics, one block from Downtown Berkeley BART.
