Devstrom at Mobile World Congress 2011

A few impressions from Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona. A short compilation of our stand pictures, the really cool Blackberry Playbook and the omni-present Android.
I see dead operating systems.

Cinco de Mayo Festival @DoloresPark
Posted from: CA, USA
One of the coolest places to hang out in San Francisco: Dolores Park. The place where you can find hippies, hipsters, startup people, ... Especially when there is the cinco de mayo festival going on. Not to mention the breathtaking view of the city. And of course cinco the mayo means margarita as well :-).
Neighborhood
Posted from: CA, USA
This is the first post from our new neighborhood in San Francisco. Guess what... I love the city. We are in 2 minutes walking distance to get an awesome view of the bay, Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. We don't really feel like being at Lands End although it is just 3.8 Miles away :-).
Planes or Volcano? | Information Is Beautiful
We were wondering this today.
Data here: http://bit.ly/planevolcano
UPDATE 1: A few people have asked so here’s how we estimated the CO2 emissions of Eyjafjallajoekull.
We couldn’t find a direct CO2 emissions figure for the icelandic volcano but we did find an emissions figure for Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) – 3,000 tons a day (Source)
When Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines erupted in 1991, it emitted 42 million tons of CO2 (source) and 17 million tons of SO2 (source). That’s a CO2-to-SO2 ratio of 2.47:1
Applying that ratio to the 3,000 tons of SO2 emitted by Eyjafjallajoekull gives us the figure of 7,412 tons of CO2 per day.
Clearly, this is a ballpark figure and it’s likely to be more complex. If any vulcanologists are passing by and would like to enhance or correct our numbers, please help yourselves to the data!
UPDATE 2: We’ve been sent some new figures from the Nordic Volcanological Institute of the University of Iceland (thanks Nicole!). They’ve measured the CO2:SO2 ratio as 5:1 (source). So Eyjafjallajoekull is emitting an estimated 15,000 tons of CO2 a day – twice our original estimate. We’ve updated the diagram accordingly.

I guess all the countries could meet their CO2 goals if if the "vulcano situation" stays the way it is. Although I am concerned about the environment I hope that my flight to SFO next week will not be canceled.

Barcelona as it should be
Posted from: Barcelona, SpainToday it stopped raining and the sun came out. On the pictures you could see an ongoing windows phone 7 presentation, I am sorry but there was no working phone available. The new htc legend is a really nice device. And most important of all the Devstrom RCS Widget in an official GSMA presentation *g*.

Devstrom @MWC
Posted from: Barcelona, SpainThe second day at Mobile World Congress gave us the chance to present the Devstrom UC Widget to a broader audience. And we found the time for a quick look though Hall 8. Nice to see that emporia (another Austrian company) has quite a huge presentation area. And as an eyecatcher, the SIM card packaging of gemalto reminds me of Keith Herring.

Trim whitespaces from NSString
Another quite common string manipulation. You can change the search and replace strings for your needs :-)

Charter Cities or how could Guantanamo make meaning
via chartercities.org
I first heard about charter cities about a year ago and thought to myself, that this idea is amazing. Read the concept behind it on http://www.chartercities.org.
Today I also discovered an article in Financial Times Germany and saw, that also brand eins is reporting about this idea! Keep spreading this really awesome concept.
When to use your iPhone?
Is it inappropriate to use an iPhone now? I think there should be an App for that :-)

Personas (via http://personas.media.mit.edu/personasWeb.html) is an art installation and is supposed to show you how the internet sees you. It is quite scary and visualizes the randomness of the the internet in a quite interesting way.
