Notes from an Iranian citizen:
Before you start mourning the “Supreme Leader” of my country, let me take you down a memory lane you were privileged enough to never live through.
In January of this year alone, over 32,000 Iranians were massacred after demanding basic human rights. That's at MINIMUM!
For decades under his rule:
• 100s of 1000s Protesters were shot in the streets.
• Teenagers were hanged from cranes in public squares.
• Women were beaten to death for showing their hair.
• Baháí's were imprisoned, denied education, stripped of property, and executed simply for their faith.
• Political prisoners were tortured, executed.
• Young girls were raped in prison before execution because of twisted “religious” loopholes. (Virgins according to them go to heaven, so they must take the matter in their own hands to stop that from happening).
• He funded Bashar al-Assad while Syrian children were gassed with chemical weapons.
• He armed and financed the Houthis while millions of Yemenis were pushed into famine.
• He supplied Russia with drones used to bomb Ukrainian cities and civilians.
This is the dictator you are suddenly mourning?
It is deeply painful to see posts from people who have absolutely no idea what he was responsible for; yet feel confident enough to be outraged over his death.
You dislike who took him out? Fine.
You distrust U.S. motives? Fine.
We Iranians are not naïve. We know global powers do not move out of kindness.
But to reduce what is happening in my country to “a distraction from the Epstein files” is beyond political commentary !! It is minimizing decades of suffering and hundreds of thousands of deaths.
Our trauma is not a talking point in your domestic political war.
You get to scroll past this.
If you want to argue geopolitics, do it.
But do not erase what this regime did to us.
And do not lecture us on how to feel about the man who oversaw it.
