Shadow and Presiosa yesterday out grazing on the new grass
Ok so yesterday was an interesting day at the ranch. We went out for a ride which ended up being really fun but when we got back a lady who is in our tack room was trying to get in but the lock was stuck beyond belief. So we tried getting it off and ended up prying/bashing the the whole latch part off. Now we have to go out and buy a new lock plus a latch part
Inactivity
I’m really sorry for not being as active as I probably could be but I’ll try to be more active now
On the Road with Shadow and Preciosa 10 12 2017
Shadow and Presiosa's first piece of artwork that they did on their own. I loaded the paintbrush then they were the ones that dropped/did brushstrokes. It is a start and I would say pretty good for their first time
My first ride on Shadow in about 4-5 months

Trick Training
Well I gave up on teaching Shadow how to look ashamed and started teaching him to hold a paint brush in his mouth in order to get him to paint. In the two days I was out there he is starting to get the idea that when I say "paintbrush" that means for him to touch it with his mouth. After working with Shadow for 10 minutes I just for the heck of it offered Preciosa the paintbrush and she took it in her mouth and I immediately praised her and gave her a bit of carrot as a reward so I ended up doing a 5 minute session of training with her to see if it was just a fluke. She ended up touching the paintbrush most of the time.

Tried something new
Yesterday I tried to teach Shadow how to do a simple trick just to get him thinking and to try something different. The trick is to teach your horse how to look ashamed and the article I used can be found here. So I worked with him on this trick for 5 minutes so that he wouldn’t get too tired out. I was using cut up apple as the reward. Shadow had some trouble with the trick but that might have been my fault because he thought that I had treats in my right hand when they were in my left hand. I was also raising my right hand up so that would have confused him. After the 5 minutes I let him go out in the arena to roll and just hang out.

could someone please explain appaloosa saddleseat to me, please? i’ve never, ever understood it. appaloosas are stock horses and don’t have the action or carriage of saddleseat horses. it looks SUPER awkward.
I just. Stock horses aren’t built for that. Why. Stop. Just ride a saddle horse if you want to, don’t put the trappings on a stock horse and call it good.
Why not? If you put a cutback saddle on an appaloosa, you’re riding saddle seat, just like if you put a western saddle on a saddlebred you’re riding western. Just a style of riding (but yes, it was designed around high-stepping horses. But there’s no harm in riding in a cutback saddle on a stock horse) This horse looks better than the limos….uh saddlebreds that have tree stumps nailed on their feet while their riders sit over their kidneys.
So, fun fact. Some Appaloosas are actually gaited. Yes. Gaited. The Indian Shuffle, a lateral, four beat gait with a distinctive 1-2-slight pause-3-4 rhythm, is sometimes seen in foundation bred horses, whose lineage is linked more closely with the breed’s Spanish Jennet origins. The gait is not unlike the paso displayed by the Paso Fino and Peruvian Paso, both of whom are also descended from Spanish Jennets.
That said, the ApHC does not promote the Indian Shuffle in its saddle seat classes. Instead, the rules call for horses shown in the saddle seat divisions to display only the walk, trot, and canter.
Now, this is entirely speculative on my part, but I’ve long thought that the saddle seat divisions remained for those Appaloosas that were born of an Arabian outcross. (Arabians are among the three approved outcrosses for Appaloosas; the others are QH and TB.) There are a number of Arabian bloodlines with quite a lot of action in the trot and whose way of going is very well suited to saddle seat. Cross one of those with an Appaloosa and the resulting offspring might very well make for a nice little saddle seat horse. Of course, there’s also no denying that some of the entrants in the saddle seat classes at ApHC shows are simply exhibiting their horses to get points toward a versatility award. People are not shy about that. For them, it’s a points game.
Don’t forget that large animals can get heatstroke, too!
I could not find an equivalent list/formula for those who are not in the U.S.*, but here are some additional charts and information about how hot is too hot as taken from this page at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
And:
For good information on how to keep your horse from suffering heat-stroke, and what to do if it happens TheHorse.com has a list of articles on the subject:
Summer Horse Care
*As best I could find, the formula in the OP originated with the US Pony Club, but I could not nail down a definitive source to link to. Feel free to add a source if you have one or if I am mistaken. :)

HORSE JOURNAL #4
6/21/17
When we got there I noticed that Rio (Lizzy’s horse) wasn’t in his stall and that the palomino mare that was in the stall next to him was in #17 (Rio’s stall). I gave Shadow and Preciosa a couple pieces of carrot. Earlier that morning Joy (the ranch owner) had called my mom because Richard’s (the ranch manager) horse Pamela (the palomino mare) had gotten out and got into our barrel of Preciosa’s food, which was the wrong food. So I took a look at the barrel and it didn’t seem like she had eaten a whole lot of the food. I did have to step on the lid to reshape it. After that I went and opened the tack room and ALL of Lizzy’s stuff was gone, so she must have left with in the past week because mom had noticed Rio in his stall when Shadow got his teeth done last week. Anyway, I went in to fly spray Shadow and noticed a cut on the bottom of his chin right where his curb strap would hit. I took Shadow out of his stall and lead him over to the wash rack and sprayed him off since it was so hot and also to clean out the cut. When mom came in I had her look at the cut and she got the antibacterial wash as well as a bucket to mix it in. I cleaned the wound out and it didn’t look nearly as bad as it had, I used the rest of the wash on his tail which he has been rubbing.
Once I was done I put him back in his stall because it was so hot and his stall is completely covered so he has plenty of shade. I made their meals so they could get their meds and while I was making their food Shadow was being a brat by getting in to it with Pamela and kicking. After they ate for a while we took them out and cleaned them up before I put Shadow’s bridle on and tried to ride him around in the arena at a walk, but he was so ouchy that it was hard for him to walk more than a few minutes at a time. I felt so bad but he seemed happy to have me just sitting on him. While I was riding Shadow, mom put Preciosa in the back arena and was working her in there.
When I was done riding Shadow I got off of him and took his bridle and the Mexican blanket I had used on him off and let him roll. Mom brought Preciosa up to the arena that Shadow was in and put her in there to let her roll and hang out with Shadow for a little bit. We took them out and brushed them really well and put stuff on their hooves. We put them away and let them eat the rest of their food. When mom came back from the bathroom she told me that we were in violation of the new rule that Joy put up. The rule was that any cans left in front of the stalls had to be moved to a stall in the front that had been one of Shadow’s old stalls. So we got the stuff out that we would need for their evening meal and with the help of Richard moved all four cans to the front and bungie corded them shut. I walked back and talked to Jean for a little bit then went to make their food. While I was doing that mom was talking to Jean and Jean offered to let her ride Ama (Jean’s Peruvian Paso). I finished making their food and then we fed them and packed up our stuff, said good bye and left.

HORSE JOURNAL #3

When we got to the ranch we turned the horses out together and they ran around a lot which worried me that Shadow might hurt himself. We had made an appointment with Dr. Robertson to do some radiograph pictures on Shadow’s front hooves to see what is causing him to be so ouchy. Dr. Robertson arrived and we went up near the front of the ranch where they have an electrical outlet. I held Shadow while they did the pictures and had to wear one of those bibs that you were when you get X-rays at the dentist’s. So after taking two pictures on each of the front hooves Dr. Robertson showed us that on the left hoof his coffin bone is tilted down too far and it looks that at one point he had Foundered, which we didn’t know since it happened before he was with us. The situation with his hoof can be fixed over time by Tom, the farrier, cutting the toe back a little at a time and it should take about a year to fix and then he will more than likely be able to go on the trail again. Until then I can ride him in the arena where there are no rocks. Also, Shadow has no signs of arthritis in his front hooves what so ever. After we finished with the vet, we took the horses back to their stalls for a little while to get some water.
I took Preciosa out and tacked her up with the western saddle my mom will be using and took her in the arena to start teaching her to neck rein. Now the thing about her is she has separation anxiety when she is away from Shadow even when she can still see him. So since Shadow was in his stall she was not happy in addition to her not having been worked in a while she was a handful. Once I was able to get on her, she kept trying to go back to the gate but I kept her turning so that she wasn’t able to go back to the gate. Preciosa kept fighting with me but eventually when I had her stand still and she seemed to relax until I started trying to get her to walk away from the fence then it started all over again. She kept tossing her head around and almost constantly felt like she was going to stop and rear however she never did. After working with her for maybe 15 minutes I stopped and got off of her and took her tack off and Mom said that she would brush Preciosa while I spent some time with Shadow.
After Mom had put Preciosa away, another boarder named Elissa was riding Alma in the arena next to our stalls. Just so you know, Alma is a Peruvian Paso which is a gaited breed of horse. So she was riding her and it was her first time riding a gaited horse and she was really good at it. I took some video of her riding and Alma looked beautiful because she was exaggerating her movements in the front end. I didn’t get Elissa’s permission to post it though.
Lastly I made up Preciosa’s medicine bags and cut up carrots before making up their evening meals.
