I write mostly but not exclusively kink(meme)fic for BG3 & Critical Role, @ shadowfell on ao3.
i am. bad at posting. but this is here so that you can send asks related to fic, including directors commentary and the like, because i have the thing wrong with me where i can talk about things for ages.
i also take prompts, but like, i make no guarantee of completion / timeline on that. ask anyways!

*thrumming with excitement* it's Fandom Trumps Hate time! Want a fic from me that I have to finish instead of leaving in my WIP pile? all it takes is a donation to charity!
Auction 1 for Baldur's Gate 3 - up for pretty much everything but especially tadpolycule
Auction 2 for Critical Role - for all four campaigns, and I think I'm the only one offering fic for c3! especially excited for any c4 prompts, these characters are living in my brain rent free.
Both are for a oneshot (likely explicit although I do write AU/character study), and while it says <5k I'm not limiting myself to that, just not guaranteeing a minimum length. I'm also probably going to offer to the #2 bid on both.
The Red War College - or, cut content and what it means for Wyll Ravengard
So, a recent article came out that you may have seen about Wyll's writer expressing regret on how he was treated. And one line stood out to me:
A lot of decisions came later in development than was ideal - and there was a key situation near Baldur's Gate that I intended to heavily involve Wyll in (the Red War College) that got cut
So, with a single line of reference, I tried to find out what this would have been.
The Red War College has been mentioned in interviews in the past as part of several locations cut from the game, including Anga Vled, a Shadow Druid base, and Candlekeep. We don't know how early these were cut in the development, but it seems to be fairly early on, and that they would have been part of Act 2 (or, generally, part of the journey between the crash site in Act 1 and arriving in Baldur's Gate for Act 3).
The main feature of the Citadel of Strategic Militancy, the Red War College's role likely comes from early research of what lies between Baldur's Gate and Eltural / along the Chionthar, same as Anga Vled and Moonrise Towers, with all three being very minor locations in Forgotten Realms lore at large. There hasn't been much said as to what any of these places were intended to be part of in the game's story, but there are things we can intuit, especially knowing that the Red War College would tie into Wyll's arc.
The Citadel of Strategic Might was a fortress about a day's journey north of Baldur's Gate, dedicated to the Red Knight, an exarch (ascended human/demigod) of Torm, the god of battle. It's basically the only site of worship, originally a hold of a family in service to her, but became the base of a Paladin order (the Red Falcons) and a military officer school focused on strategy, the Red War College.
The descriptions are minimal, but the one consistent thing is a lanceboard/chess motif, based on the Red Knight's symbol being a knight carved from ruby, and her primary domain being strategy. Specifically, the center hall of the College features a human sized chessboard that would be used in ceremonies.
Thus, theory the first: the lanceboard puzzle, and potentially the other trials found under Wyrm's Rock, was originally part of the Red War College plotline, potentially as a test to prove your worthiness to get allies for the final fight, as we know that the Ansur dungeon came relatively late and it's position in Wyrm's Rock was to make use of limited space in Act 3.
So, where does Wyll Ravengard fit into this?
Well, I can't say much as to the original plan, because the Red War College being cut seems to have been from before the decision to make him Ulder's son; while this role could have been something to challenge his perspectives, I think it's more likely that in parallel to other major companion arcs it was a place he had been as a student.
If we extrapolate this out to Wyll's canon timeline, this makes even more sense. We don't know much about what Wyll was up to prior to his warlock pact and exile at 17. There is mention of him getting drunk for the first time at 14, and various childhood anecdotes from his father.
14 would also be the same year that the Duke was assassinated to resurrect Bhaal and Ulder would begin plans to become the replacement and then Grand Duke. Ulder, who is quite famously not known as a family man in his appearances in Murder in Baldur's Gate and Tyranny of Dragons.
Theory the second: Wyll, after the assassination and his father's ascension to dukedom (or potentially earlier), was sent off to the nearby officer's school by his father who was now to busy with work to raise him, and wanted his son to be trained in both martial skills and honorably. This also serves as somewhat of an explanation why Ulder would have tasked him with the protection of the city at 17 instead of his lieutenants in the Flaming Fist - it was a test to see what he'd learned while studying to be an officer.
I doubt we'll get any more concrete confirmation as to what the Red War College would have been, but Wyll returning to the school where he'd studied how to be a hero and a knight before the moment when he'd had that put to the test and instead made a warlock pact? Well, that sounds like a pretty compelling plot to me.

there are also some NPC ships and OT3s based on requests/some of the most tagged on AO3. If you have a ship/ot3 that you think should be included let me know and I'll add it!
standard caveat of 'a ship being on there doesn't mean anything / don't be a dick'
and bonus here's mine :
(yes, i made the thing, yes, i still edited the categories to be more specific.)
a prequel to my Origin!Orin + Wyll childhood friends fic, featuring: a year of baby wyll & orin being cute, lots of murder thoughts, holidays, what definitely isn’t ominous foreshadowing about ansur and balduran, stealing candy, and maybe a bit of a treatise on sarevok, because what i am predictable.
wyllstarion discord was talking homestuck, which means i had to classpect all the tadfools
Okay, we'll get the easy one out of the way: Astarion's a Rogue.
Yes, this is because he's a Rogue in game, because it is his archetype, but also I think that it fits him. One of the things about Rogues is that they deny their aspect, in large part because they don't think they have it.
There's a joke here about blood, because he steals blood, because he's a vampire, and there's an interesting thing there about Astarion & his simultaneous need and rejection of connection, but I think there's more to it than that. In the same vein, I think there's something interesting about Breath, the inverse, which is all about freedom, something Astarion struggles with just as much.
Instead, this may feel a bit too on the nose, but I'm going with Heart. While on a superficial level, heart is about relationships and romance, at the core, its more about yourself and your identity, having a soul. That's what Astarion is struggling with, the freedom to be a person and not a puppet, knowing what he wants rather than following through the motions. But it's also about the way he uses relationships and sex as part of that.
Plus, a Rogue is someone who invites the theft of their aspect rather than more directly stealing it - Astarion is the tool by which thousands of souls were (almost) stolen. But his journey isn't to continue that and steal souls, its to become his true, unambiguous weird af little self.
Wyll is a knight. He's the knightiest knight ever to knight.
Because he's a fairytale hero, yes; you could try and tie him into the noble/prince archetype, but there's a reason his background is Folk Hero even though his father's the Duke. Wyll isn't just a fighter, he's a hero. And he's also hiding so much. Every member of the party hides stuff, but what Wyll hides isn't (just) his warlock pact. Wyll hides behind the persona of the Blade of Frontiers to cover for the fact that he is at some level still the kid who's father exiled him from home. Who failed to live up to his dreams of being a hero and is now damned to the hells.
Wyll is also such a hope-aspect player. It's about fairy tales and magic and optimism and unconditional love and everything that makes him into that romantic hero, a bit naive but also blindingly full of faith. So, as a Knight, he is fronting this, because he is so Hopeful, to hide the fact that he thinks a failure because he can't live up to those ideals his father set out for him.
He can, though. Because Knights think they're failures, and they're wrong. As the Grand Duke, he's an inspirational figure to the masses; as the Blade, he is the light of hope that cleaves through the hells. He is the hero, and he is good enough. He just needs to accept it.
Lae'zel is easy to archetype - she is a warrior through and through, which gives us Knight and Page. Knights are the passive class, and are best known for putting up masks and hiding their real feelings, while Pages are the active, starting lacking in their aspect and growing to meet it in full. Lae'zel is a very driven, active character, but I think her arc is very much about that growth, questioning what she was raised in and finding strength
Thematically, she has the space-alien vibes, as well as an intense martial nature and interest in combat. I think Blood is an interesting one, because it has an association with violence, but it is fundamentally about connection, the ties to your allies and compassion. Lae'zel
Life is also an interesting angle to go here, with its association with both growth and rebellion, but the tie to wealth and power doens't seem fitting. I am tempted to find a space connection, in specifically something she grows into by the end of the game, but that feels really pushing it. Blood helps emphasize her sense of isolation, growing to make friends. This Lae'zel is the exact sort of leader who can take down Vlaakith's empire.
Shadowheart is such a Void/Light character, and I will not be taking questions. Secrets, knowledge, Shar/Selune? That aspect is down.
For her archetype, I think there's a lot of overlap between the Prophet/Scholar, Magician and Fairy groupings, but Magician is definitely where I'm leaning to - that gives us Witch as the active, and Heir as the passive. I'd say that overall Shadowheart is a fairly passive character, not that she doesn't make choices but that she's more reactive; she's a healer, after all.
With everything with Shar, I think that its reasonable to read Shadowheart as someone who is inverted for most of the game, having been molded in Shar's image. Taking Light as her innate aspect and Void as the inverse, that gives us the Heir of Light inverting to the Mage of Void. Mages are fundamentally about suffering, and that's what Shadowheart is, down to the chronic pain. For a true mage, it's more about experiencing it through unique perspectives and learning, but since this is something forced upon her, I think its more about the pain. In turn, as Heir of Light, she's naturally powerful, but in equal parts suspicious and easy to manipulate.
There are a lot of jokes around the Light aspect - it being the canon Lesbians aspect, it being the canon Main Character aspect (and Shadowheart is the one companion you cant skip) and, of course it being the luck aspect, and her notoriously bad to hit chance.
So, Gale's another more difficult one to parse because I think there's definitely some inversion going on here, or at least, he's bouncing between the Seer-Mage-Witch-Heir grouping, which tends to be the tightest and most overlapping.
Knowledge is tied with Light, but while he's a nerd that doesn't need to be his aspect. Doom is very indicative of the bomb in his chest, and there's something with Life/God of Ambition, but I'm actually leaning more to Time/Space.
Time is, after all, the aspect of destruction to Space's creation, and I think there's something interesting there. Space isn't as directly about ambition, but I think the destiny angle can tie into some of Gale's stuff.
Similar to Shadowheart, I think there's something interesting about the Heir/Mage dynamic. Gale as Heir of Space is very much a magic prodigy - magic to him is much more art than science, with his demonstration of the Weave and ending up as an illusion professor. In turn, the Mage of Time is suffering from destruction and from destiny - running out of time - and Time is the aspect that in Homestuck traditionally ends the universe, which is very much the Orb.
And Karlach. I'll be honest, I really struggled with Karlach, but after doing Gale, I think that with her similar situation of 'think in my chest that is going to kill me' is interesting, but while Gale has a massive world-ending threat, Karlach's is more personal, and also more fiery, which is very Doom. The inverse of Doom is Life, which is the exuberant joy that I'd expect from Karlach.
Alternatively, I think there's a Hope/Rage read - with Hope also having that bright exterior, and Rage being a very Barbarian trait, but to be honest I think being stuck on Rage is what made this so difficult, because Rage is a lot more anti-establishment and skepticism, which is a harder fit into Karlach.
Class wise, Karlach pretty much just lines up with warrior, but while I think there's definitely stuff she's hiding, I don't know if I can fully read her as a Knight. Page is also interesting, because she doesn't feel like she's lacking in anything - so maybe the destructive classes, Prince/Bard - but ehhh. But there's an interesting read if we take her as a Page of Life.
Life is that literal healing, positivity, growth, but it's also very much about power and wealth. In Homestuck, the three life aspect characters are literal royalty, and from that lens, Karlach's pretty clearly an underdog. In this case, her story actually starts with Gortash - when she's a young kid who, like pages so often are, wants power/wealth/respect and falls in with a bad crowd hoping to get it. All that Life exuberance, and
I don't think there's a case of a full inversion, but I do think there's a tie to her going down the wrong (criminal) path leading to the Rogue of Doom, and being the vehicle of theft and destruction as a soldier. Straight on, Rogue of Doom is a very martyr class, something I think Karlach can lean into in her darker moments, having accepted her death, whereas the Page of Life is what drives her to keep living, keep growing, and become even more badass than she already is.
For the lunar sway, Prospit tends to be the extroverts, the optimists, the messy, honest people, while Derse has the introverts, the pessimists, the intellectuals, the rebellious and the hiding-behind-masks.
Karlach is an easy Prospit, while Astarion and Shadowheart are easy Derse (okay, there's an argument about Shadowheart and the inversion thing but Selunites may be light, but they're moonlight, illusions and trickery). The others I'm more torn on, and to be honest, the tiebreaker is going to go for making an order, since Derse and Prospit dreamers
Lae'zel is on Prospit because I will not let go of the image of Lae'zel fuming at her computer while Shadowheart deliberately ignores her. She also fits with her being very blunt and open. That gives Gale and Wyll, and I am more 50-50, but I like the idea of Karlach being a very chaotic host to Gale who actually knows the rules, and to put Wyll and Astarion next to each other for funsies. That gives us, not paying attention to the order (although, it would depend on the fic for who would actually start the cycle)
This chart shows the ratings-split across various ships, with the lines representing the overall values in the fandom tag. As you can see, BG3 has mainly Explicit rated fic, with 39% across the board, which is larger than the main for AO3, with only 18% explicit.
Unsurprisingly, the split on Tavstarion lines up almost perfectly with the overall fandom split, since it is far and away the most dominant pairing. Some pairings are notably high in Explicit fics - Cazstar, Oakweave, Tav/Raphael, Tav/Gortash, and especially Tav/Haarlep.
While there aren't any that come close to the overall AO3 values, we see several ships that are less explicit, with Durge/Wyll the only ship from this selection to have Teen as the most common rating - and of the 15 ships with below average Explicit, four were Wyll ships, with BladeWeave the only listed Wyll ship above average. Durge ships were also less explicit than Tav ships in every instance except Shadowheart.
Looking at this by character, and a whole lot more - under the cut.
There's less variation looking at character, but we see that Halsin and Minthara are above-average explicit, and while Durge isn't, they're notably higher in Mature vs Teen/Gen. While Astarion and Gale are about average, the other companions are much lower, although leaning to Mature over Teen or Gen.
While Not-Rated is pretty constant, and generally small, we do see that Durge has more not-rated than other characters, which is also reflected in the ship-charts, with Durge ships making up most of the above-average Not-Rated fics.
Looking at how rating varies by word count...
We see that Gen predominates short fics, but vanishes to almost none when looking at longer fics. Most fics in the fandom are in the 1-5k wordcount range, and the average values fall in between the two categories to reflect this.
Category
Category - which refers to the type of ship - is
Because Tav is a custom character, the gender varies, and so category is a useful way to see trends in Tav genders. Because unlike rating, category is not exclusive, this includes fics tagged with multiple categories, and therefore also references to other ships cross-tagged, but still gives us a good idea of general trends.
Female Tavs predominate the fandom, with male companions and NPCs being predominately F/M while female companions F/F.
Notably, Tav/Tav is the only instance where M/M dominates. Other has a large share in Tav/Emperor and Tav/Kar'niss, and while it is used to refer to nonbinary pairings, in these cases seems to reflect the 'monster-fucker' element of those ships.
In contrast, Durge ships with male characters are predominately M/M, although of note ships with female characters are still mainly F/F, suggesting Durge pairings are more likely to be gay while Tavs are more likely to be female across the board.
Wyll and Raphael are the only Durge/male character ships where F/M>M/M, however also of note is the high Other for Dammon - representing mainly one person's writing about their nonbinary Tav.
Zooming back out for a more overall view by wordcount
We see that the general average is fairly even between F/M and M/M, with F/M being larger except in <500 words. Gen fic is most popular in the smaller wordcounts, with it being the least tagged category >5k words (and multi the least tagged <5k words). F/F is generally even and small regardless of wordcount.
Engagement
Now, I've previously done stats work looking at raw fic count, and while that's a useful measurement of understanding what's popular in the fandom, so too are looking at hits, kudos, and other engagement stats to see how those are reflected in
In order to estimate the total number of hits, I found the number of fics in certain brackets, multiplying by the average to get a sum. For those in the largest brackets (>100k for hits), I took a direct count as this was only a handful of fics and they did not have an upper end to compare to.
Graphing out the number of fics in each bracket gives us a chart like this:
And while it's interesting to note that most fics in the fandom have 1000-2500 hits, the difference in total fic number makes this not particularly useful as a graph. Instead, I took these estimate values as a % of the total number of fics, to get a better compare between ships.
This probability curve shows the proportion of fics that had hits in that bucket or large - so 100% of fics had at least one hit, while they approach 0 at 100,000 hits. The median BG3 fic - at 50% - has around 1,000 hits, which is also where we see the peak above.
Looking at this, we see that most of the selected ships have more hits than average, with only Wyllach and Durgetash having fewer. Shadow'zel, Shadowlach, and Tavstarion are in the middle, while Bloodweave, Wyllstarion, and Cazstar are grouped together, but Halstarion is the leader leader in proportional hits.
Looking at Tav (and Durge) ships grouped together, we see a much tighter grouping around the total BG3 line, with Astarion and Gale overlapping close together above, Halsin again the notable lead, and Wyll a very clear loser in terms of hits.
Of course, hits is only one of the statistics that AO3 provides.
Looking at Kudos, we see a similar trend of the average for BG3 being on the low end, with Wyllach and Durgetash lower, but still close together. Bloodweave, Halstarion, and Wyllstarion are all very closely tied in the kudos curves, with Bloodweave slightly dropping off with Kudos >500.
For the tavships, more of these are below the average, and Lae'zel joins Wyll at the bottom of the pack, while Astarion and Halsin are neck and neck as the leads.
Comments is where things really get interesting - Tav/Astarion is overall low, but generally close in line with the average, unlike with Kudos & Hits. Wyllach is also much stronger than in those metrics, but Wyllstarion is the true stand out, with significantly more comments than Bloodweave or any of the other pairings across the board.
The tavships are much less dramatic, and in this case mainly below average, with again Wyll and Lae'zel lagging behind, alongside Karlach.
Last, but not least (except literally in overall counts) we have bookmarks. This number only includes public bookmarks, but its what data is available!
This is closer to what we saw with the Kudos graph, with Durgetash lagging behind others above average. Bloodweave isn't as prominent as there, more in line with Cazstar, while Wyllstarion and Halstarion are closely intertwined.
Tavship bookmarks are interesting, with Tavstarion and Tav/Halsin being clear leaders as the only ones above the average, and again Wyll and Lae'zel very low.
For the total stats of the numbers:
Tavstarion has the most overall hits, with approximately ~31 million, followed by Bloodweave around ~11m, Tav/Gale at ~7.5m, and Tav/Halsin at ~5m
Tavstarion has the most overall kudos, at ~1.5m, with Bloodweave at ~875k, Tav/Gale at ~375k, and Wyllstarion at ~250k
Tavstarion has the most overall comments at ~300k, with Bloodweave at ~170k, Tav/Gale at ~90k, and Durgestarion at ~75k
Tavstarion has the most overall bookmarks at ~225k, with Bloodweave at ~100k, Tav/Gale ~50k, and Halstarion ~45k
However, again, this mostly just tells us that Tavstarion ahs the most fics overall. Instead averaging these sums out by the # of fics give us:
Halstarion has the highest average hits, at ~4k, with Tav/Halsin, Shadow'zel, and Wyllstarion at ~3k
Halstarion has the highest average kudos at ~275, with Wyllstarion at ~260, Bloodweave at ~222, and Tavstarion at ~150
Wyllstarion has the highest average comments at ~60, with Cazstar at ~50, Bloodweave and Halstarion ~40
Halstarion has the highest average bookmarks at ~40, with Wyllstarion ~37, Bloodweave ~27, and Tavstarion at ~20
In a similar vein, we can also track the kudos-hit ratio, which can generally estimate 'of the people who read the fic, who gave a kudos' and the same with Comments and Bookmark ratios
Overall, we see a lot of variation, but most Kudos-Hits ratio come in around 5%, with Comments and Bookmarks around 1%.
Wyllstarion has the highest ratios of all three. Bloodweave, Halstarion, and Wyllach are also generally high, and Cazstar being notably high in comments.
Tavships generally have lower engagement, although Durgestarion has notably higher comments. These are also more generally consistent.
It has been suggested that F/M content generally has lower engagement than F/F or M/M content, which would explain some but not all of the differences between the ships.
My next steps are to play around with this data and otp:true, to see what is changed without the interference of multi and background ship fics,, which likely will have an impact on some of the smaller pairings, but will be interesting to see the impact on tav ships as those are often cross tagged with OC, Reader, and other similar tags.
dissertation prospectus: finished, which means i can get back to writing what's really important: wyll and shadowheart doing elaborate rp and torturing halsin with a certain book draft.
i have added yet another tag into the 'first time use' pile.
and while we're at it...I'm auctioning a oneshot for FTH, if anyone wants to donate to charity in exchange for some fic!
so, it was mentioned that there are background-based dialogue options in the game, and i thought, huh, i've done multiple playthroughs and never seen any. wonder how rare the are.
anyways i checked.
There are two different uses of Noble, both for companion dialogue.
Minthara, talking about Menzoberranzan (as a way to determine whether you were in the same social circles)
And Wyll, in his Act 1 romance scene, talking about dance (and whether you were similarly trained)
We also get some uses of the Sage...
Only sages and the extraplanar tag get to recognize the language, makes sense...
But while it's mentioned in the synopsis, in practice, the dialogue is tagged with wizard. This implies that it's left over from the shift to background tags to class tags (and that the artifat maybe should have been changed to wizard similarly?)
there are technically two of these with the myconids, but it's the same gist. But the last usage we get is Urchin...
this is just. so funny. i've never triggered any of the wearing carmen's clothes talking with figaro, but i love the inclusion, and I really love that the Urchin gets a special option to complain. its fascinating they coded this in, because it had to be after the background dialogue tags were largely dropped, so it's here because it's the only way to properly set up the joke. i love it. obsessed.
now, I will say, my search didn't actually pull up the wyll dialogue, it was the one i already knew about, so clearly there's something weird with windows searh that means this may not be fully accurate. but the fact i found some gives me fair confidence there isn't vast troves of tags i'm missing.
it really does make me sad, because while I like the class and race tags (and also wish there were more of them), i think the backgrounds getting dialogue options would really shine. and seeing that they're in game but mostly as these left over features is kind of sad.
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the
Organization for Transformative Works
i like wyllheart for a lot of reasons, but #1 is the banter they have reciting mermaid porn, so writing fic of them rp'ing out a bad smut novel was inevitable.
This is a chart of all the ships with >500 fics, with the number of fics/month since the game launched in August '23 to present. Because it is so dominant, Tavstarion uses the right axis and is the thickest line; ships with >1000 are in the middle length, while <1000 are the lightest for legibility.
Of note is the fact that, most prominently seen in Tavstarion but also seen in other ships is a drop, with most peaking in October '23 and for Tavstarion and Tav/Gale falling fairly dramatically through '23 and gradually decreasing through '24.
Of these top ships, only Bloodweave and Wyllstarion don't show a decreasing trend, both overall staying consistent around their respective levels after an initial rise, although with notable individual peaks.
Ships separated for each companion, and by % ships instead of total counts, can all be found below the cut.
This is, unsurprisingly, the closest to the overall top ships due to the dominance of Tavships in the fandom.
Durge ships are much lower values than Tav.
Lae'zel is dominated by Shadow'zel, which beats out Tav/Lae'zel consistently. Of the minor ships, Karlach/Lae'zel is the most prominent, followed by Durge/Lae'zel.
Shadowheart is dominated by Tav and Lae'zel, with Shadow'zel becoming strongest early on and more recently as Tavheart falls. By far strongest of the secondary ships is Karlach, although Durge and Gale both make a strong showing in early ''24.
Astarion, I've already talked about Tavstarion, and it and Durgestarion's fairlly comparble decline. Bloodweave is notable for being fairly consistent, and is the highest of the companion ships, with Halstarion also high but strongest in '23, with Wyllstarion beating it out
Cazador is notable for beating out all of the girls, of which Karlach is the highest, with selfship fic on occasion beating out Shadowheart and Lae'zel.
Gale is a fight between Tav/Gale and Bloodweave, that Bloodweave has been gradually winning these past few months. Beyond that, Durge/Gale is the highest, although it has been decreasing. Galeheart and Galesin have a decent presence, both strongest spring of this year, with Bladeweave the other notable ship, highest more recently.
Wyll had Tav as the highest ship early on close to launch, but has since become dominated by Wyllstarion, highest at the beginning of '24 but remaining the top ship save for August, where Wyllach beat it out. Wyllach is the only other shp of note, regularly higher than the others, including Durge.
Karlach has overall lower values and is fairly chaotic, but Tav is her main ship, like most highest closer to launch and falling to the wayside. Wyll is her other main ship, which has been fairly consistent, followed by Shadowheart, then Astarion and Durge, with the occasional peak of Lae'zel.
Karlach is notable for having some of the highest amounts of Minthara, which comes close but doesn't actually beat out Durgelach.
Halsin is dominated by Tav and Astarion, with Tav staying the highest ship and both falling lower after initial peaks following game launch last year. While much lower values, notably Durgesin and Galesin have increased, finding their peaks early summer '24.
Other ships of note is mainly limited to Shadowheart in '24, although Wyll has a faiirly consistent shoiwng.
Minthara is the lowest of the main companions, but is interesting in having the smallest gap between Tav and Durge shipping, even if Durge never fully exceeds. Beyond that, Orin has a strong presence early on, falling away through '24 but staying one of Minthara's main ships, similar in values to Karlach, Shadowheart, and Gale.
Not included are Jaheira and Minsc due to the image limit + overall low values.
% Charts
These are in %fics for month out of the sum of all the tagged ships for that month - so not taking into account
On the left is the %for the character in question (ie, of all Tav ships, how many are Tavstarion, GaleTav, etc) while on the right is for the opposite (ie, how common is Tavstarion of Astarion ships, and GaleTav of Gale ships)
Tav is mainly Tavstarion, although we see that it has been slowly dropping from the majority, crossing to <50% at the start of 2024; GaleTav has been the main ship rising to replace it, with everything else more consistent, hovering <10%
Aside from Tav/Tav and Tav/Durge, all the Tav ships are fairly high, staying mainly above 25%. Highest is Astarion, which started at a whopping 75% but has dropped to only 50%; GaleTav and Tavsin are more consistent around 50%. Karlach, Shadowheart, and Mintahra hover in the 25-50% range, with their highest points also being at game release in August, while Wyll and Lae'zel are overall lower - although Lae'zel reaches a high here in September.
Durge is mainly Durgestarion and Durgetash, with Durgetash rapidly rising through the end of 2023 for them to battle out. Other ships are <10%, although Durge Gale has risen to a peak of 14% this latest month.
Aside from a brief outlier in Minsc (due to single fics), Durgeships are overall much lower than Tavships, with only Jaheira and Minthara beating out 25%. The others are generally fairly consistent.
Lae'zel is majority shipped with Shadowheart, after the first month of launch staying fairly consistently >50%. Tav hovers around 25%, with other ships <10%, with notable Lae'zel/Astarion at a peak in August and Lae'zel/Karlach peaking both early and in March.
As expected, Shadow'zel is again the only Lae'zel ship of note, but it is not the majority ship for Shadowheart the way it is for Lae'zel. All other ships are <10%, although due to low counts Jaheira dips above. Minthara and Karlach are the other more consistent, although Wyll also got >5% last month in August.
Shadowheart is a battle between Tav and Lae'zel, both dancing around the 30% mark, with Tav strongest right after launch, and Shadow'zel coming in strong after.
Other ships are all <10%, save a momentary blip of Durgeheart in May - Gale has a strong showing early in the year, but otherwise they're all fairly even and low.
In terms of other ships, Shadowheart is the majority pairing for Lae'zel, and the others are all much lower - Karlach is the highest, and Minthara also peaks up as >10%.
Astarion is represented by an overall drop from Tavstarion and a gradual rise in Bloodweave - with early in this year Tavstarion falling <50%, and Bloodweave slowly rising to meet it, surpassing Durgestarion but not yet beating out the Tav ships.
Every other ship is fairly even and <10%, although there's a small blip for Wyllstarion in May.
Astarion is hotly shipped, wit several ships bouncing in the 1/3 range - Tav and Durge are teh highest, but were strongest close to game release, with Halsin, Wyll, and Gale fairly even. Astarion with the girls is far lower, although is most notable for Karlach.
Gale is a battle between Tav and Astarion, dancing around the 50% mark, with Bloodweave finally getting majority in these past few months. Everything else is much lower but more consistent, wit DurgeGale around 10% and everything else <5%
For other ships, Gale isn't in the majority save for a few individual Minsc fics, but is strong and rising presence for both Tav and Gale, getting >25% in the past few months. DurgeGale has also been gradually rising, the only one to cross over 10% save a brief peak for Galethara and Galesin. Other ships are mainly sticking <5%
Wyll has no true majority ship, although Wyllstarion was able to cross over briefly in May of this year. Like many Tav ships, WyllTav was strongest just after game release, but has been overtaken by Wyllstarion, with Wyllach a fairly constant other ship. Other ships stay <10%, with a notable peak for DurgeWyll in March, Bladeweave in April and July, and Lae'zel in August.
Wyll doesn't make much of an impact on other's ship charts either, with only Karlach >10% dancing around the 25% mark. Astarion has been solidly at the 5% mark through this summer, but otherwise only a few peaks of Jaheira, Minthara, and Lae'zel make much of a showing.
Karlach is another with no real dominant ship, the strongest presence Tav, which has steadily dropped moving away from game release. Wyllach has slightly risen, but stays <30%, with the others fairly even and mainly <10%, although Shadowlach is consistently higher and Starlach reliably crosses over. Karlach/Dammon comes closest, but is strongest early on, falling off through 2024.
Karlach isn't anyone's majority ship (although she comes close in November for Jaheira), but is the strongest for Wyll, with their pairing dancing around 25%. Shadowheart and Minthara are both regularly at and above 10%, and Lae'zel has a few peaks, but any other ship is solidly <5%.
Halsin is mainly a battle between Tav and Astarion, with Tavships dancing around the 50% mark. They came the closest together in November '23, but Halstarion has never crossed over into being the majority.
Durge/Halsin has had a general rise, getting >10% throug the late spring and early summer, but seems to be falling back again. Galesin is the only other ship to get >5%, with a notable peak in April.
While Halsin has a large number of tags, he's well overshadowed by Tavstarion such that both Tavsin and Halstarion are <10%, and not reliably >5% Jaheira gets some prominence due to her low values, but otherwise Durge is the only one to get >5%.
Minthara, with overall lower counts, is fairly chaotic. While not the majority, she is predominantly shipped with Tav, but notably has one of the closest gaps between Tav and Durge ships. Orin is the other main ship, highest early in September '23, dropping down to the level of other Minthara ships.
For pairings with companions, Karlach regularly crosses over 10%, with Shadowhert getting a recent high >15% in July, and Gale crossing over briefly in February. Halsin, Lae'zel, and Wyll have crossed the 5% mark as well, leaving Astarion for once the least shipped companion.
I have now hit the image limit, so will not be showing the % for other companions, but Minthara/Jaheira is te only one to break 5%, with karlach the only ship that gets even close. Minthara ships are all fairly low.
If anyone is super interested in the Jaheira or Minsc graphs, they can be added, but these are all very low values, with moth ships being rare to get 1/month.
As a general rule, the fandom is dominated by OTPs, mainly Tavships and Astarion ships, with Shadow'zel and Wyllach the only real exceptions, and things getting weirder with the low counts for Mintahra, Jaheira, and Minsc.
bonus chart looking only at non-tav/durge ships, for the people like me, who only really stick in those sides of the fandom. top 10, which also happens to be everything >100 fics.
By Character
Tav is, unsurprisingly, the closest to the overall top ships due to the dominance of Tavships in the fandom. Again, Tavstarion is on a separate axis.
We can see that Gale is the other dominant, but while its peak is higher than the current Tavstarion values, it still is ~100 fics lower. Everything else is similarly lower than TavGale, with Halsin coming in at the third highest, then Shadowheart and Karlach staying fairly strongly above 100/month until just recently, and Wyll and Lae'zel rounding out the origins with lower values. Minthara is pretty even with Tav/Durge ships, and the others are very low and intermittent.
Durge ships are overall much lower values than Tav ships, but joining Astarion over on the right axis is Durgetash, which gets to be the top ship for a bit this July.
Of the secondary ships, Gale is unsurprisingly still the top, the other values are not nearly so clear - while Lae'zel is consistently the lowest of the Origins, everyone else has a moment at the top, including Wyll who was one of the lowest for Tav ships. Minthara also gets to make a stronger presence here, although Jaheira remains very low.
Lae'zel is dominated by Shadow'zel, which beats out Tav/Lae'zel consistently. Of the minor ships, Karlach/Lae'zel is the most prominent, followed by Durge/Lae'zel. Everything else is fairly inconsistent, but there's a notable spike of Wyll ships this past August.
Shadowheart is dominated by Tav and Lae'zel, with Shadow'zel becoming strongest early on and more recently as Tavheart falls. By far the strongest of the secondary ships is Karlach, although Durge and Gale both make a strong showing in early ''24.
Notable as a prominent NPC ship is Nocturne, who's placed similarly to Astarion and Halsin, but had a slower start, not getting much until a few months into the game (as more people found and got to know her, presumably).
Astarion, I've already talked about Tavstarion, and it and Durgestarion's fairly comparble decline. Bloodweave is notable for being fairly consistent (with large fandom event peaks keeping it from having as much of a drop), and is the highest of the companion ships, with Halstarion also high but strongest in '23, with Wyllstarion beating it out in May (for yet another fandom event peak)
For NPC ships, we see Gale with Mystra, which is regularly higher than Bladeweave butgenerally staying underneath Shadowheart and halsin, although it has some notable presence in July.
Wyll had Tav as the highest ship early on close to launch, but has since become dominated by Wyllstarion, highest at the beginning of '24 but remaining the top ship save for August, where Wyllach beat it out. Wyllach is the only other shp of note, regularly higher than the others, including Durge.
Karlach has overall lower values and is fairly chaotic, but Tav is her main ship, like most highest closer to launch and falling to the wayside - in the past few months, it's reached the values of Wyllach, her other main ship, which has been fairly consistent. Of the secondary ships, Shadowheart is fairly high, then Astarion and Durge, with the occasional peak of Lae'zel.
Dammon is notable as an NPC ship, that is fairly strong in '23, rivaling Astarion and Durge, but has dropped off strongly through this year to be more at the level of Minthara and Gale.
Karlach is notable for having some of the highest amounts of Minthara, which comes close but doesn't actually beat out Durgelach this past month.
Halsin is dominated by Tav and Astarion, with Tav staying the highest ship and both falling lower after initial peaks following game launch last year. Everything else has much lower values, but notably Durgesin and Galesin have increased, finding their peaks early summer '24.
Other ships of note is mainly limited to Shadowheart in '24, although Wyll has a fairly consistent showing. Zevlor makes his mark as an NPC ship, mostly throug strong bursts in October '23 and early '24, although is still about the level of Wyllsin.
Not included are Jaheira and Minsc due to the image limit + overall low values - Minsc getting his highest peak at 3 Tav/Minsc fics ina single month, Jaheira only slightly higher wit her Tav peak of 8.
