HE CAN FEEL HIS HEART POUNDING within his chest, high on the cheers of enthusiastic fans and the rush that comes with a hard-won victory and he cannot help the petite smile that has come to settle ‘pon visage, the confidence he held as a facade slowly shaping into something real with each clash within stadium walls. There’s a lightness that has enveloped him, an uplifting sort of feeling that was once thought to be beyond his reach and he fins himself already looking forward to his next duel; he’ll do even better for sure, the top not so far out of reach anymore.
FAMILIAR VOICE CATCHES HIS attention, unable to place it from sound alone but it’s enough to catch his attention nonetheless, steps coming to a pause as chin lifts to focus gaze on whomever was speaking to him —– and he has to fight down the startled noise that began to crawl up throat, blinking twice, thrice, in way of establishing that he wasn’t imagining things and the man would simply disappear with the closing of his eyes.
❛ You’re —– ! ❜ Jun swallows, forcing the composure he’d had previous to his discovering of Yuugi’s presence, a flattered, flustered sort grin replacing the casual smile he’d adorned moments prior. ❛ A-ah, thank you very much! I’m glad you enjoyed it. ❜ A pause, rubbing the back of his neck with a nervous cough into free hand; don’t make an idiot of yourself, Jun. ❛ I didn’t know you’d be here. I heard it might have been a possibility but due to scheduling conflicts… ❜
The reaction is unsurprising, yet he is still distantly amused by it, given the circumstances. Here stands the winner, glowing from his victory and flustered by the presence of a mere man. He had liked pretending, for the night, that he was just another face in the crowd, unassuming and without expectation. Pretending he is what he FEELS is the closest that he can get, fingers brushing along an ideal that will never really be his. Life has diverged from its imagined path, and there is no foreseeable way that he will ever be able to set it along the original tracks for as long as he lives. So he continues, because time will never stop.
Laughter drifts and hand lifts, palm curving along the soft line of his cheek, head tilting along with it as he peers down at the younger. They weren’t so far apart in age, he imagines. The man below is a fledgling, young in age and career and Yuugi thinks that he will become someone to remember. He thinks, briefly, of the teenager he met years ago, and imagines they are close in age. The same age? It’s probable.
❝ You’re welcome —— there had been some scheduling conflicts that I couldn’t work around that cleared up at the last minute, so I wasn’t here in any official way, ❞ free hand waves, as if brushing away the idea of paying any sort of tribute to the title that was his. ❝ I’m kinda here in secret, so don’t tell anyone, ❞ laughter laces his tone and he winks at the younger man briefly, amicable in his teasing.
