One of the things I love about Deep Space Nine is Sisko and his Raktajino (Klingon coffee). He always orders it “double strong, double sweet”. Which is unusual because in movies and TV everyone drinks black coffee. It always seems to a character trait that they only drink it black. It also gets portrayed as something noble and somehow superior to drink it this way. So it’s refreshing to see someone actually put some flavor in their coffee.
Batman the Caped Crusader is my favorite Batman portrayal.
It’s an interesting new take on the early days of Batman with new and diverse versions of old characters.
I love the opening title cards which are a carryover from Batman the animated series.
It’s also a very low tech Batman for a change. No giant bat-computer or hi-tech equipment. He mostly relies on his fists and his detective skills.
Even the relationship between Batman and Alfred is still in its early stages and the tension is palpable.
Season two is supposed to come out this year and I can’t wait.
This is one of my favorite episodes of Batman: The animated series. Bruce was a fan of the TV show The Gray Ghost as a kid. In the present someone is recreating bombings from the show. Bruce then enlists Simon Trent the actor who played the Gray Ghost to help him stop the bomber.
Simon Trent/The Gray Ghost is voiced by Adam West. This is the only time that West was in a Batman show that wasn’t a comedy and he did a great job in it.
When Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns hit shelves forty years ago it marked the beginning of the modern age of comics.
The cover to the first issue was at the time very unassuming. It was a silhouette of Batman against the night sky with a flash of lightning. Which was appropriate because the comic hit like a bolt of lightning.
At the time I was living in Joplin, Missouri, and the only comic book store was the Book Barn. The owner Ron Erwin said at the time that they were selling three copies of Batman a month. When TDKR came out, they sold all 30 copies in a day.
For twenty years the general publics image of Batman was the Adam West and Burt Ward series from 1966. The other image of Batman was from 70s cartoons. Those cartoons played up the silliness and added mystical characters like Bat-Mite. While writers like Denny O’Neil had worked to correct this in the comics most people still considered Batman to be a comedy character.
When the TDKR came out it was an instant hit. This was the prototype for the dark gritty Batman that would dominate for years. This was a Batman that operated outside the system. After issue two Commissioner Gordon was out and couldn’t help him anymore. Robin was dead and buried. system. This Batman operated in the modern era. Gone were the villains in flashy costumes. Two Face and Joker wore nondescript suits, the mutant leader was just a shirtless thug.
Issue two saw him take the first female Robin in Carrie Kelly. The series also established what Batman and Superman’s relationship would be from now on.
Reading this at 15 opened a new world for me. The Watchman would be released this same year and these two books showed me what adult comics were.
Today would have been my mom’s 82nd birthday. She passed away in 2019 from cancer.
Recently while going through my Amazon kindle library I discovered some books she had purchased. I shared my kindle account with her since she didn’t use Amazon for anything else. She loved the kindle because she could adjust the text size and background color.
The books were part of a series by author Robert McCammon. She had the first five books of the Matthew Corbett series. The books are set in the early 18th century and are a combination murder mystery/horror. They blend real events with fictional ones and usually have a moral dilemma at the center. Matthew Corbett is in the first one a law clerk who eventually becomes a sort of freelance problem solver.
There are ten books in the series but unfortunately my mom only made it through the first five. I have decided that I will read the whole series. I just finished the first one, “Speaks the Nightbird” and started the second “Queen of Bedlam”. I am listening to them on Audible and each one is around 25-30 hours long so it may take a while, but I’ll get there.

Since it’s Len Wein’s birthday this seemed like the perfect day to talk about how I got into Swamp Thing.
I’ve always loved Swamp Thing. My first exposure to him was a show called Video Comics.

It aired from 1979-1981 on Nickelodeon. They would show a comic book panel by panel on screen and have people read the dialogue.
They did several comic books but the one that stuck with me was Swamp Thing.
They started with his origin and the Bernie Wrightson art got me right away. Len Wein was the writer on the comic and he also created the new X-Men.
The character was unlike any other “superhero” I had seen before. Other heroes had been mutated and looked inhuman but Swamp Thing never joined a super hero group. He wasn’t fighting megalomaniacs out to conquer the world. He didn’t try to fit in with society. He lived in the swamp that he took his name from. He fought monsters and creatures that made him seem normal by comparison. The first series ran from 1972 to 1976 and then Swamp Thing languished as a guest star in other comics.
In 1982 Wes Craven wrote and directed a live action feature based on Swamp Thing. He kept the creepy characters and sense of isolation. This was the first comic book movie that I thought was very faithful to its source material. The movie didn’t do very well and it was two years before Craven made another film. Since his next movie was A Nightmare on Elm Street he ended up being ok.
The comic series was relaunched in 1982 to coincide with the movie. The series like the movie didn’t do well and by issue 19 was ready for cancellation. An unknown writer by the name of Alan Moore took over with issue 20 and he revitalized the series. Moore turned him completely inhumane and pitted him against the natural world and the mystical world. Moore’s run would introduce new powers for Swamp Thing and a new supporting cast. Chief among the new characters was occult detective John Constantine. Moores wrote 55 issues in total and many of them are some of the best comics I’ve ever read. Moore set the tone that has remained with the character for 40+ years now.
Other writers and artists have had successful runs and the character has been rebooted to varying degrees of success.
I’m not gonna try to break down all of the successful writer/artist runs on Swamp Thing because the two most influential for me were the initial run by Len Wein and Bernie Weightson and the Alan Moore and Steven Bissette/John Totleben run.
