SBM021: Neil Campbell & Richard Youngs “Six Scores” LP
140 g vinyl edition of 300 with printed inner sleeves. Mastered by Sean McCann. I designed the sleeves and labels with text and images from scores provided by Neil & Richard. First new duo LP in over 15 years from these longstanding UK-based experimentalists. It started off as a proposal for a duo gig, and is now this puzzler of a record. There’s quite the story behind it all, read on while listening to a few tracks... LPs now available from Shaking Box (Canada), Neil, Richard, Norman Records (UK), Fusetron and Eclipse (USA).
FRIESEN/WATERS DUO "NO. 3" shakingboxmusic.bandcamp.com/album/no-3 cassette edition of 84 / shipping july devin friesen: gtr, tapes nate waters: alto & tenor saxophone recorded/mixed by d.f. w/tascam 244 in the library basement (calgary ab) mostly summer 2016, a little 2014 (Shaking Box)
BITTER FICTIONS – XXVII SBM020 / cassette edition of 70 shakingboxmusic.bandcamp.com/album/xxvii Three extended pieces from Bitter Fictions, and among the last Tascam 244 recordings made by Devin Friesen before moving out of longstanding recording haunt The Library. Lushly blown-out feedback solitude caught on tape, one more hopefully hopeless new age conspiracy from the bummer basement. The 22-minute opener “Jaywalking to Avoid Families” sets the tones, by the end of “Stitch (Ten Years a Stranger)” the reflection has slowed to a numb crawl. Measure steps between longing and dread. (Shaking Box)

SBM019: Bitter Fictions - Jettison LP edition of 100 now out from Shaking Box Listen / Order on Bandcamp solo electric guitar & tapes performed & recorded w tascam 244 by d.f. in the library basement (calgary, ab) 2015-16 mastered for digital & vinyl by sean mccann “JETTISON is an inspired exploration of no wave post industrial dark ambient drone, hypnotic layered loop construction, improvised distortion deconstruction, strangely beautiful etudes for delay and feedback, immersed new age lonerism, a weirdo amalgam of BASINSKI’s DISINTEGRATION LOOPS, ENO’s AMBIENT 4, and SONIC YOUTH’s mid 80s output or rather SKULLFLOWER’s IIIRD GATEKEEPER, at times like FLYING SAUCER ATTACK plays JANDEK […] as good as 2014’s DERELICT DRIFT is (dream drone channelling FSA and ROY MONTGOMERY, and it’s really good), JETTISON is an exponentially deeper dive, a masterpiece – i really dig the unexpected penultimate track “morning in yr eyes” that plays like a glorious FRIPPIAN desert fried sunrise symphony, watch out for that one, though you need the preceding half hour for it to pay off in full” --PSI LAB
