ONE OF THE SCARIEST PEOPLE BACK HOME. Â if it was anyone else, ivy would have taken the compliment with glee. Â Blood-sucking aphids, even if Harley had said that back at home it wouldâve been a compliment. Â Because she wouldâve said it with this kind of awe, like there was nothing better to be than scary. Â But the Harley staring at her right now wasnât saying it like that. Â There was a venom in her voice, the only venom Ivy had ever known to affect her.
SHE COULDNâT LOOK AT THAT FACE OF DISTRUST. Â so she looked at her plants instead. Â She didnât angle herself away enough to close the conversation, but focused in on her sprouting basil enough that she didnât have to see her. Â She didnât have to see someone who wasnât even the psychiatrist sheâd once known.
THE LAUGH THAT ESCAPED HER RUBY LIPS WAS CRUEL.  it was harsh and cold and very practiced.  The perfect laugh for a femme-fatal, for a black widow, for every other name the men of the world wanted to call her.  â You donât need to tell me where youâre from.  I already know, Harley.  You were born in the Narrows.  You were on your gymnastics team in high school, and you were quite brilliant at it.  You went into psychology because you wanted to help, and you did.  You moved me to a cell that wasnât poisoning me.  You wanted to learn about me, and I learned about you.  And Iâm not talking about Crow-boy when I say him. â
SHE MET HARLEYâS EYE AGAIN, the perfect mask over her face.  The seductress, the tease.  â I know you Harley Quinn.  I know that you have a little voice in your head that youâre trying keep locked away.  I know that the Joker pushed that door to Harley wide open, and that there are rare times when you find balance between the two of you. â  Her.  Harley had always been in balance when she was with Ivy.  It was part of the reason why she hated seeing Harley with Joker so much - she was unbalanced.  Like a soil with too high a pH.

Harleen drew back, body tensing out of habit. She didnât like this change in the woman. This was the cold-blooded killer from the news, beautiful in the most deadly way. Harleen didnât have much plant knowledge, but she remembered the time Lou had eaten just a singular flower of a specific plant, had to have her stomach pumped immediately. It had been a terrifying night for both hyena and human. Harleen would never forget the drooping heads, the gorgeous and delicate petals surround by leaves of the most vibrant green.
Beautiful and deadly, capable of poisoning animals and humans alike with the smallest amount. Just like her.
Thereâs a reason Ivy got locked in Arkham and not Blackgate, for the staffâs safety. She could seduce anyone with that look, that laugh. Kiss your lips and leave you paralyzed on the floor, still thinking it was the best experience of your entire life. Back home, Harleen would have fallen for it. Anyone would have.
After seeing that softened, loving look on the womanâs face, the smile only scared Harleen.
âI nevah worked at Arkham,â She swallowed, hoping her voice was steady. âDr. Quinzelâ was slowly slipping from her, from the curated voice to the confident set of her shoulder. âYou got the wrong girl, Iâve nevah met you or anythinâ.â
Did that sound like a lie? It certainly felt like one. Sure some of that sounded made up and others⊠well. She had never told anyone why she went into psychology. Classmates were given the âitâs easy and I can do it with gymâ explanation. Her parents⊠well they had never cared much. They wanted her to marry a âniceâ Jewish doctor, not become one. Poison Ivy shouldnât know that. No one should know that.
A nervous laugh bubbled up out of her, quickly breaking eye contact with the woman. It was really too much for her. She wasnât friends with a rogue. She wasnât friends with anyone. âIs that what the Riddlah is goinâ by now? âS a stupid name. He was an Arkham guy, not Blackgate. If you mentioned Zsasz or Falcone I wouldâa believed ya.â
âHarley Quinnâs a stupid name, too. Why would I go by somethinâ kids used ta bully me with?â Her voice was quiet, almost to herself. Rationalize it, Harleen. Ivy just had internet access and was really good at guessing. Nothing else.
