not everything in a story has to or should be "realistic" but in my opinion there's a level of illusion that should be maintained, and I think that's the actual problem that many people try to pinpoint with the "unrealistic" criticism. Dialogue shouldn't be written like an actual transcript of human speech, but should contribute to the illusion of a real person speaking. A character is a tool of the story, not a narrative, but we're trying to maintain the illusion that they are a person. Worldbuilding should exist to serve the story, not to be a perfect simulacrum of how every aspect of nature/society etc. would actually play out for real. But there should be the illusion that it could be real, that organizations and systems would operate in such a way, that people might behave in such a way.

YAYYYY okay so prefacing this with i liked the movie âïž compliment sandwich incoming
+I liked what the movie did w the concept of the backrooms itself. i was worried going in that it would be the, uh, SCP-ified backrooms and it was Not! for the most part
-thought the researchers were boring. ik those were a big part of the original series but we had different characters as our viewpoints and couldâve stuck w them fully? perhaps? idk i think leaving the backrooms as unexplained and unresearched as possible adds to the Vibes
+love love looooved the creatures. reminded me a lot of mirrormask which is MYYYYY FAVORITE MOVIEEEEE đ they were uncanny and creepy and a little sad. i like the âmisrememberedâ explanation for why they looked like that. Actually YEAS i loved the memory angle as a whole; the sequence of Maryâs house getting corrupted as we went further down into the backrooms was REALLY GOOD. pretty much the entire idea of the movie explained without words.
-there were times when we could have used less words. lol. the script was not great, but not egregiously bad.
+there were some GREAT tension building bits. everything in the basement of the normal real-world furniture store was creepy as hell. the dirty clothes room scene had me covering my eyes.
-i think the movie struggled between trying to be Elevated Horror and then tossing in bits of more typical broader audience appeal. looks at the employees i did not care for in the slightest lmao. the researchers also clashed with that vibe imo sorry to bring them up again i just forgot to put this in the first point lol. i think the biggest bits of vibe dissonance come in the handheld camera bits, where it really feels like a youtube series given an insane budget. which is FINE, but it kind of grates against the rest of the movieâs attempts at being more psychological.
+loved the christmas tree scene. that mightâve been the height of the movie for me.
-the portrayal of Maryâs mother was uh. hm. crude. an extremely straight-forwards portrayal of a character w/mental illness that gets demonized bc itâs a horror movie and itâs Scary. i understand that we had to establish Mary being traumatized by her upbringing but the scenes with her mother felt so dated i was kinda shaken tbqh. like. rolling her into a mental hospital while great value brand Everywhere at the End of Time played was kinda ridiculous
+there was a brief bit of clark running through the poolrooms that hit me super hard bc i shit u not it looked 1 to 1 like a nightmare I had when I was in middle school and i just thought that was fun
-i think there were a lot of bits in the movie that were fine on their own, but didnât work congruently. the start of the movie felt verrrryyy different to the middle and latter parts, and the characterizations there almost set up for the later twists, but it felt more like the characters decided to split off in a random direction after the halfway point.
+soundtrack and sound design were stellar. captured the exact vibes of eerie and uncanny they needed to set the mood.
-okay this one is a nitpick but i didnât know where to put it at the beginning of the movie when clark is sleeping at the furniture store at night itâs intercut w a scene of mary at a party in the middle of the day which was just an odd little editing mishap
