A kind of sad, but kind of happy thing about Hong Kong is the domestic helpers that stay during the weekends. They don't have anywhere to stay, so they camp out wherever they can, even on the small verges of a fork in the road. I never knew this was a thing before I arrived, but now I don't know how to feel about it. One the one hand, you see a shot like this and think its sad that so many people have no choice but to camp next to the bins, but what you don't hear is all the laughing, singing, and joking they do together too. There's a real sense of community that feels so strong you could almost ignore the fact the helpers really have nowhere to stay after work. Ive even seen a few doing karaoke under bridges outside their tents! It's certainly a negative characteristic of a city to be so ambivalent about workers' accomodation, but at the same time I think the pop-up communities are beautiful. After 2 months of running around it was nice to take a break and do some classic touristy stuff: swim and sunbathe.
