When will banksy
I think one of my favourite things aboutĀ āSteven Universeā, and one of the things I find most touching and personally affirming, is the relationship between Rose Quartz and Greg.
I mean, hereās Rose, whoās represented as this powerful, intelligent, charismatic, beautiful woman, respected as both a warrior and a leader. Ā She travels to Earth and decides to spend her life there, and in 6000 years, the human she decides is most interesting, most engaging, most beautifulā¦is Greg. Ā
Greg is a doofus. Ā Heās bald. Ā Heās fat. Ā Heās a slob with no sense of style or grooming. Ā Heās practically homeless. Ā Heās a failed rock and roll star whose dreams of fame and fortune ended with him running a small town car wash and living in the back of an ancient van. In any other show, he would be the loser of the cast, the fuck-up, the somewhat lovable, helpless goofball who canāt be counted on for anything.
But Rose thought he was beautiful.
Itās something of a sitcom parody; the dimwitted, ugly, slovenly husband with the beautiful, intelligent wife. Ā Fred and Wilma, Archie and Edith, Peter and Lois, Homer and Marge. Ā But Rose and Gregās relationship isnāt like that. Ā Even in my favourite of those relationships, that of Marge and Homer, Homer is presented as more than a bit of a jerk. Ā Oh, heās a fundamentally decent man who genuinely loves his family and treasures his wife, but heās also selfish, thoughtless, more than occasionally neglectful, lazy, and self-centered. Ā And more than that, in those shows, the husband is really the main character. Ā Most of the wifeās role is reacting to his antics. Ā But thatās not Rose and Gregās story.
Greg is a good man. Ā Not just a decent guy under the jerky exterior, but a truly and fundamentally good man. Ā He stands up to his misogynist buddy. Ā He adores and encourages his son in every way. Ā He is kind and giving to everyone he meets. Ā He works hard, even though itās a job that he never wanted and that has taken the place of his dream. Ā Speaking of that, even though heās never seen even a lick of the stardom he dreamed of, Greg has never lost sight of his ambitions. Ā He still plays music, still sings, still performs, still writes albums. Ā Greg may never make it as a rock star, but he will never stop trying. Ā This is what Rose saw. Ā This is what Rose, one of the most powerful and respected warriors and generals of her people, came to love.
In a world where success and worth are measured primarily in material gains and career-based achievements, Greg is a reminder of whatās truly important. Ā In the show, his failed music career, his chubby build, his sloppy clothes, his povertyā¦they donāt matter. Ā Whatās emphasised is the true, human beauty of Greg; the warmth, the kindness, the courage, the imagination, the dedication to art and devotion to family. Ā Itās a reminder to all of us who have been pushed to beĀ āsuccessfulā, been hassled about when we wereĀ āgoing to get seriousāā¦that even if we are living in poverty, even if we have no real career, even if weāre not conventionally attractive or havenāt achieved all weāve wanted toā¦we still have value. Ā We still have beauty. Ā And we are still loved.
oh man I have been wanting to ramble about greg for a while now.
because my favourite thing about Steven is that his stereotypically feminine traitsāthe fact that heās empathetic and caring, the fact that heās a bit of a diva, the fact that heās creative and musical and sensitiveānone of that comes from Rose. Rose is a towering pink goddess who is shaped like a woman and named after a flower, but what she passes on to Steven is righteousness and conviction and a desire to protect humanity. Visually, Rose is this towering icon of femininity, but sheās also a goddamn War Queen. Demonstrably sheās more than a little out of touch with human emotions, sheās occasionally a bit crass and distant and superior. Emphatically not human, but also the more stereotypically masculine, compared to Greg. As far as the softer parts of Stevenās personality, thatās all Greg.
And as noted above, Greg is just a beautiful human being. I adore him and I love this post <3 <3 <3

PSA
DO
NOT
ROMANTICIZE
THE
HARLEY
AND
JOKER
SHIP
PLEASE
But that is the romance of it! Watch āNatural Born Killersā and you will get it. They are psychopaths in love. I can show just as many panels where they are being sweet and romantic. So they beat the fuck out of each other from time to time. And try to kill each other. In their world, itās just part of the dance.
I think youāre missing the point, friend.
First of all, there is noĀ āromanceā in this. Letās start with that phrase; psychopaths in love. But are they?
Because while Harley definitely seems in love, the Joker has made it clear on several occasions that he isnāt romantically or physically attracted to her.
Psychopaths, as a medical definition, are unable to empathize with others or form attachments with others, but they DO tend to be charismatic, charming, and proficient at manipulation.Ā Batman as well, who has been studying the Joker intensely since day one, has said that Harley is just a tool of his and that he doesnāt have the capacity to love.
He seems to have more love for Batman than he has for Harley.
He also donāt just beat the crap out of her. He tries to kill her.
Just like his henchmen, when she is no longer of use to him, he tries to dispose of her. But Harley always narrowly avoids death, so the Joker lets her live another day.
You may think,Ā āBut the Joker keeps Harley around, so that must mean he cares about her a little, right?ā
Eh, wrong.
The Joker abandons Harley all the fucking time. Then he comes back for her when she is now useful to him in some way.
When he needed her for the Red Hood gag in Death Of The Family, he found her again.
When sheās of some use, he always finds her.
Just like his henchmen.
Thereās also the point you made about them beating the crap out of each other. However, Harley rarely ever fights back when the Joker attacks her. She does so in the New 52 because sheās finally decided this relationship is abusive and rid herself of him, but when theyāre together, she takes all the abuse. Often times, in the earlier comics, she seems to be afraid of his wrath.
There is no romance in fear.
In fact, even Harley herself recognizes that sheās in an abusive relationship and she wants to get out. Several times.
Their relationship being aĀ ādanceā would imply that they both alternatively suffer and enjoy it. But has the Joker ever complained of Harley abusing him? Has he ever been put in the hospital because of her? Has he ever cried and run away to live with friends?
Letās not forget that their entire origin was the Joker manipulating her so he could escape from Arkham. She fell in love with him, he just used her for an escape.
Harley is the classic abused woman. She leaves because sheās unhappy and wants something better for herself. She comes back to him because she thinks this is love. The Joker plays her like a game of chess and uses her as a tool. Saying this isĀ āromanceā couldnāt be farther from the truth. To the Joker, this is about having power over her.Ā
Heās kind to her in very rare moments in order to keep her around, and then he turns around and smacks her because he can. The kindness is part of classical conditioning. Will a dog stay with you if you only smack it? No. You have to pet it and feed it as well.
There is noĀ āromanceā in this relationship. It is completely one-sided, and even then, theĀ āloveā Harley feels is fearful conditioning.
Iām just gonna leave with this panel because Harley sums it up well:
If your shipās āromanticā backbone requires abuse then your ship is shit.
