The day has finally, finally come. I set out to start this fic after finishing Aster last year, and I brainstormed all summer and into the fall. I've never planned harder for a single story, but what's even crazier is I originally had ideas for this in 2022 and expanded that in 2023. Currently, I have 12k worth of notes alone, which means there's no telling how long this will end up. It'll be a WIP for the foreseeable future and my #1 priority because it's overtaken my brain tenfold.

Now, I am not a medical professional. I've done countless medical research for this (still am) but there will be some levels of fiction because of the doctor/patient relationship. Bucky's disease/illness is made up, and obviously we're gonna have him and Steve making out in a hospital room at some point and more, so... 😘

You mean, like me, a professional illustrator in her 40s, who has started drawing at the age of 8 and who has been drawing with a consistant art style for the past 15 years (with some improvements, thank god 🤓) ? People like you have accused me of tracing using tracing paper when I was a kid, tracing in Photoshop 15 years ago when I started to post on the internet and now my art is "AI". I should be used to it by now: when I posted this one 14 YEARS AGO, people told me it was traced and that "I wasn't a real artist, actual artists could tell"

I've consistently posted step by step, WIPs, vids, reels, gifs, shown the number of layers I use by art (sometimes more than 100) but apparently, it's never enough. And my art is AI generated ? Which one ?

Which is also funny is that fans of Supernatural, Good Omens, Sherlock, etc…have been able to say exactly which reference pictures I used for each drawing, not only for faces but sometimes also for the pose and the clothing (because yes, omg, I use reference pictures, the horror 😲)

However if you want to talk about my technique, and I've never hidden it, I sometimes use photos or 3D models for backgrounds because I hate drawing backgrounds. For instance the background of the Superwholock one is composed of a couple of stock pictures (a pub).

Same for a "Sherlock Harry Potter AU" I'll post in a month or so: some parts oh Hogwarts are screenshots from the movie because I didn't feel like drawing a room full of students.

Also, is there sometimes mistakes in my art that don't make sense ? Yes, nothing new, I make mistakes, I've been doing it for years and I still do it, particularly when it comes to anatomy. I want to pull my hair out when I notice them weeks (sometimes months) later but here we are.

Anyway, people like you who throw "it's AI" accusations all over the Internet better think twice because the result is this.

Don't get me wrong, I get the AI paranoia but instead of sending messages to artists like this one, ask kindly about their process, their technique, etc…and also, have a look at their archive, it could help.

I'm leaving you now, I have AI art to generate (= spending 10 hours per drawing using reference pictures, finding inspiration from classical painting, using about 100 layers and stressing about the art not being good enough).

I say this as both an author and someone who has been in fandom for a long time (15+ years): I do not trust the AO3 'Claude AI detector' skin. In fact, I will never trust any future "proof of AI" tools. Why? Because it's impossible to 100% know if someone used AI in any capacity.

I am anti-genAI, especially in creative fandom spaces, but I'm even bigger against witch hunts and harassment. Because that's all what this "exposed authors" document list (and future lists) is going to do. It doesn't matter if there's a big disclaimer about NOT attacking the people listed. The internet will do what the internet does nowadays and backstab anyone they deem unworthy, especially toward ones that they've been given the greenlight to attack. The obsession and paranoia about wanting to make sure that every single fandom creation is not made with AI is, quite frankly, getting out of fucking hand. No, I don't want to read AI works. But I don't have enough time in the day or much less the ability to care about checking. If I suspect something is amiss, I'll just do the fandom of old: Don't Like, Don't Read. Don't Like? Don't Engage. Hit the back button.

No one owes anything to anyone. No photo proof. No video proof. No screenshots or anything else.

Lastly: Instead of calling out authors who might be using AI to help them create, why not encourage the use of non-AI resources? Writers Helping Writers. An old fashioned thesaurus. Word Hippo. And so much more that is out there, which some people may not even be aware about.

There are people out there using grammarly to edit their work because English might not be their first language, or they don’t know enough people to find a beta, or they’re dyslexic, or god knows how many other reasons.

There are people out there who are on the spectrum and their written work reads like ChatGPT because that’s how their brain works. There are people out there who are so goddamn skilled at what they do, others struggle to believe it’s real.

Do you know who else was like that? Michelangelo. Do you know *how many people* have stood in front of the statue of David and thought *how the fuck did any human create that?*

There are soo many telented people out there who are infinitely better than you, be it written word or drawn image, or hell, even a photoshopped picture. Just because you can’t do it doesn’t mean it’s impossible to do.

Sure, it's first tool that seems to actually shows specific left-over code so congrats, I guess, you can find small % of fics done specifically with this one genAI.

Whatever benefit you imagine coming from it, the negative repercussion are gonna be astronomically worse.

Cause what this thing doesn't tell you it WHY and HOW the Claude was used.

You have no clue! You don't know! The makers don't know! But you can bet that people online will not do any kinda of research - the person who prompted the entire fic and ended with 1k+ Claude code instances found in 20k fic will be harassed and bullied just as badly as someone whose English is second language and wrote something in their native one and used Claude to translate, because they thought if every translator and spell-checker is adding genAI then there is no difference, so they ended with 2 instances among 200k word fic, and just as badly as 12 year old who just wrote their first fic and wanted it to sound cooler and this fun website was advertised everywhere and they had no clue what genAI is or why it's unethical to use, because copyright infringement or environmental impact even are in their vocabulary yet, and just as badly as someone with dyslexia/hand tremors/ADHD who put it there to ask it to fix any typos because their uni tells them to use it, so it can't be bad.

[Also, what does '1 instance mean'? Does it mean one copy paste? Does it mean one paragraph? Is this specific 50 instances a 50 cherry-picked sentences, or is it 50 multiple-page-in-Word-worth long fragment? We don't know, the skin makers didn't explain, just posted the scary big numbers.]

There will be no nuance to be had among the guilty - and don't even get me started on the amount of just accusations that will happen. And there is no way to prove that your chapter wasn't edited - AO3 does not show it in any way, shape or form.

The amount of people I've seen who complain about the skin not working right and tagging wrong works (someone hilarious got it tagging every single work on AO3) because they're tech illiterate, or people already claiming 'xyz fic sound genAI so I know it definitely, they must've just removed the trace so it doesn't detect it' or outright telling people glad the works they checked came clean 'don't trust it, that means nothing, they could've just cleaned it'.

Literally witch trial logic - if it shows Claude code you're guilty cause it's there, if it doesn't you're still guilty and must've just cleaned it up. You cannot win.

You think it doesn't happen already? That people aren't blocked and judged based on ~vibes~ alone - that this method of judging how something 'sounds' - something that is known sound very similar to people on the spectrum because of the neuro-divergence AND more recently to black people it was trained and fixed by- isn't approved of?

Also, humans are shit at detecting genAI. Not, you're not better, writing is not the same as art, listen to literal wikipedia, I am begging you.

This is TERRIFYING. It no longer matter this tool is unprecedentedly reliable or the small benefit it might bring: it became tool of harassment within HOURS of being released. Can you imagine how much worse it's gonna become?

You hate someone? Accuse them of using genAI! It takes 5 second to fake a screenshot, you can edit source code in notepad and nobody's gonna check for themselves before joining the mob online - they never do.

By the time an author proves themselves innocent, they'll have been flooded with hate and harassed at best or doxxed or attacked in real life at worst.

However theoretically useful this tool might me: it was not released to help anyone, or every in good faith. It was released to make send a hate mob and stoke the flames of harassment.

If they cared for transparency, they would've gone to AO3 to let them use it as tool to improve implementing genAI content tagging.

That would've proposed to AO3 that they request people to tag genAI content and offered this as a reliable tool of checking compliance, without outing the tools' function and teaching people how to hide better.

Instead they made a skin to create a hate campaign for a very queer fandom, blasting two users by username in their main tweet, even when they knew it would result in genAI users learning how to hide their tracks immediately. They know this for certain, because people immediately wend to call for witch-hunts finding as many authors as possible with their invention before they wisen up to it. The skin makers made no push-back against it.

Also, I will never take it in good faith given they only called out fics by name for Heated Rivarly fandom, cause that's the fandom they personally like. Apparently they care 'so much' about transparency only when it's personal for them, otherwise they give a perfunctory 1 fic title in random 4 big fandoms to look less like haters and call it a day.

Just to illustrate my point: this is from 3 months ago. It's already >this bad<. This tool will fic nothing and only make things worse.

“coming from a place of respect” there is nothing respectful about a comment like this. this is exactly why I say witch hunt, speculations and accusations harm the writing community as much as ai does, if not more.

I am not saying “you’re an asshole if you think a fic is ai”. I have come across fics that I believe were ai-generated. but instead of asking (accusing) the authors, I make my own decisions whether I’ll continue reading for the benefit of the doubt or quietly exit the fics and look for something else to read.

because with every accusation like this, there’s always a chance of a genuine, innocent writer getting wrongly accused.

last but not least, fanfic writers do NOT owe you anything. they write for themselves and their own enjoyment. their ao3 accounts are their houses and they were kind enough to let you in their houses. for free. (you get to read things for free.) you don’t go into other people’s houses and tell them “actually I think the way you decorate your room is sus. did you actually do it yourself or did you ask a robot to do it for you?”. THEY 👏🏻 DON’T 👏🏻 OWE 👏🏻 YOU 👏🏻 ANYTHING. and I say this as someone who is not a fan of ai fics. if you don’t like what you’re seeing, quietly leave.
