CCNA: Media - So you wanna make a patch cable...
CCNA Assignment 3 - Making Patch Cables Ethernet cable is comprised of copper lines twisted into color coded pairs. They are twisted to avoid crosstalk or electromagnetic "noise". When making a patch cable, the ends of the cable need to be separated and arranged in the correct order in order to terminate them with an RJ-45 plug.
Equipment required to create a patch cable:
Cat5e Drop Cable
RJ-45 Connectors
Cable Stripper
Electrician Scissors
RJ-45 Crimper Tool
Cable Tester
Optional equipment:
Cat6 Drop Cable (If you are using all gigabit hardware)
RJ-45 Modular Loadbars
RJ-45 Snagless Boots
Process:
To create a patch cable that terminates with an RJ-45 connector you must first determine the length of cable suitable for your specific need and cut that length using your electrician's scissors. Optional: Add boots before skinning the cable.
Next, using the cable stripper tool skin the insulation from each end of the cable and expose the twisted pairs.
Now the pairs must be separated from each other. Be sure to pinch the insulation near the edge of the skinned pairs in order to avoid untwisting the cable that remains inside the insulation.
While pinching, separate, untwist, and straighten the exposed wiring. There will be a spine in the center that must be pulled away from the pairs and cut close to the insulation.
Arrange the separated cables in the EIA/TIA 568B Standard order for patch cable as noted in the figure above. Make sure to pinch them tightly together and that the order of the wires is not compromised.
Still pinching the wires tightly, cut the ends so that the only exposed wire that remains will fit completely to the ends of the RJ-45 connector plug while still allowing a portion of the insulation to be "crimped" into place when using the crimping tool. Important: The wires must be the same length or they will not all make contact with the connector ends. Optional: If you are inclined, now would be a good time to use loadbars which keep the wires in the correct order as you slip them into the ends of the plugs.
With the RJ-45 plug clip facing away from you, begin carefully sliding the ordered wires into the plug so that each one falls into its corresponding slot in the connector. Slip the wires all the way to the ends of the connector and review the positions of each before crimping.
With wires in order, use the crimping tool by placing the connector into the RJ-45 slot. Squeeze down all the way on the crimper to close the connector over the cable.
Use the cable tester to confirm the integrity of your patch cable.
Clean up any remaining bits and pieces of wire. Do not leave a mess!
Transmission Control Protocol Communication Process

This video illustrates the TCP process in simplified terms as it relates to the Transport Layer of the OSI Model.
It must be noted that as the encapsulated application data moves down the source host stack so does it also move up the corresponding layers of the OSI stack on its way to the destination host.
At the transport layer, a three way handshake occurs beginning with SYN (synchronize) control flag at the source host to initiate the exchange of data. A response from the destination web server in the form of SYN-ACK (acknowledgement that SYN segment received) control flag is returned. This opens a session from client to server and the flow of information continues as encapsulated segments of data from the source client are sent via a transmission window at a reliable rate of transfer towards the destination server. The window size and flow control for this session are both determined at the Transport Layer.
The destination web server decapsulates and reassembles the client's information and responds by returning the data requested. At this point, the entire process repeats itself in reverse. This time, it is the web server that sends SYN segment to open a session back to the client. The client sets SYN-ACK to web server and all remaining segments are exchanged.
During the previous process, there may be factors (such as network congestion) that can cause packets to be dropped. In a TCP session, any dropped packets would be retransmitted thus ensuring the reliable transfer of data between client and server.
When each side has completed transferring all of its data the TCP session must be terminated at both ends. This is done by both source and destination and is set by FIN control flag
FIN from client > FIN-ACK from web server > FIN from web server > FIN-ACK from client
Session is then terminated from client to server and server to client.

Peter Gentenaar’s Ethereal Paper Sculptures Float in the Air Like Jellyfish
Peter Gentenaar‘s art was born out of the limitations of what he could (or couldn’t) create with store-bought paper. So with the help of the Royal Dutch Paper Factory, he built his own paper factory and devised a custom beater that processes and mills long-fiber paper pulp into the material you see in his artwork. He saw the potential that wet paper had when reinforced with very fine bambooribs, and he learned to form the material into anything his imagination would allow.
Gentenaar describes the process: “By beating my pulp very long, an extraordinary play of forces occurs during the drying processes of my paper sculpture. The paper will shrink considerably, up to 40%, and the forces associated with this put the non-shrinking bamboo framework under stress. The tension between the two materials transforms itself into a form reminiscent of a slowly curling autumn leaf.”
