For clarification, it works as such.
When you go to harvest a plant, it will give you the rewards, with each reward registering and processing as normal (pretty close to all at once).
But the more plants I harvested, the slower those rewards came, to the point where, with every plant I harvested, it took a little longer for those rewards to ring in and register in the game. By the time my elixir ran out, it was taking about 3-5 seconds every time I hit X to harvest an elder plant, depending on rewards.
I tried to empty my backpack. I tried to clear out space in my bank. I spent a good 10 minutes of the elixir trying to see if taking 6 seed vaults worth of plants from my bank and putting them into vaults would help. Nothing worked. I tried logging my character out and then logging back in (I didn't turn the game off though). None of it seemed to help. For the duration of that double gardening elixir, the plants just kept getting slower and slower until the benefit ran out.
Also, I should note that there was no lag present in any other aspect of the game. Just the time it took to harvest each elder plant.
I don't know if logging out of the game completely and then trying again a different day would help. I didn't try that. But from what I saw over the course of the hour or so I was at it, yeah. The game is built to discourage doing what I tried to do. It's not an exploit. There is no rule in the game saying you can't spend wads of cash to have 53 houses and then wads more to fill them with crowns plants and garden them all to elder over the course of a month. Nor is there a listed limit on how many plants you can have going at once over all your houses or how many you can harvest in one day. Nothing I was doing was against any rules.
I really think it's just the same manner that the large-cast plant spell only affects a certain number of plants. Sure, you can try to do more, but the game is designed to prevent cheesing it out like that.
ETA: Of note, about mid way through this harvesting experiment, the game glitched to all heck. Suddenly, my Sultan's Palace had 2x of everything in it, putting me over the item limit for the house. This caused everything in the house to glitch including the plants and I was unable to harvest ANYTHING. That was the point where I logged off and logged back in. I don't know if that was caused by my harvesting or what but it unglitched after I logged back in, however the speed did not increase. Well, OK. I think it increased about 50% for about 10 plants. But after those 10 or so plants, it was back to where it was when I left off.
There's certainly more research to be done here, but getting that many gardens to elder over the course of a month is a huge pain and I'm not sure if I want to do it again any times soon.
