Up in the far mountains of Wicklow, is a huge lake called ‘The Guiness Lakes’. I am not quite entirely sure why it is called this , if anyone does know please feel free to comment below!
During this summer I made sure to visit the lake for my first time as I have heard over the years about it. Many of my friends have been up a good few times however I never got the chance to join them so this summer, I made the plans for all of us to go up so I could finally see what all the hype was about. I was not one bit disappointed. I expected some little lake in Wicklow that wasn’t much too look at. My boyfriend had told me to wear a swim suit underneath my clothes as if it were hot up there you could get in and swim about. I thought this was a joke as I never imagined it to be anything but a small, freezing lake.
When we all got up there, we parked off the side of the road. You must walk through a bit of grass and stone before you see the lake. It is quite hidden which makes it even more magical. As we all walked through the grass and tall rocks I finally caught site of the lake. On a summers day in June, it was some sight to see! The sun had caught the green scenery and the water ever so perfect. I did not expect to see something like this 30 minutes drive from my home. It is something you expect to see in the movies!
It was a brilliant day out. Who knew such a beautiful lake could be found somewhere off track! During the summer days it can be quite busy full of young and elderly, people hiking or just walking along with their dogs but if you plan it properly and go up early enough you can get a good space for yourself and your friends like we did. I got into the water, after not believing I could or ever would and it was great! Jumping from rock to rock and finally slowly getting in to enjoy the cool water as the sun was high in the sky. The lake stretches right back and around behind some trees. We didn’t go around to see what was behind as it got quite cold and we decided after spending a couple hours, to get out and relax.
My only regret is that I never went to see this lake before. I can sure guarantee that summer 2016 I will be paying a few visits to this beautiful lake.
It is the hidden gem of the Wicklow Mountains.
