“In July 1942 Anne Frank and her family, fleeing the horrors of Nazi occupation, hid in the back of an Amsterdam warehouse. Anne was thirteen when the family went into the Secret Annexe and, over the next two years, she vividly describes in her diary the frustrations of living in such confined quarters, the constant threat of discovery, the hunger and fear. Her diary ends abruptly when, in August 1944, she and her family were finally discovered by the Nazis.

Anne Frank died in March 1945, aged fifteen, in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany.”

On This Day — August 4, 1944

Anne Frank wrote her final diary entry on August 1.

Three days later, the Secret Annex where she was hiding was raided.

At 10:30 a.m., the SS and Dutch police entered the home at Prinsengracht 263. They went straight to the movable bookcase that hid the entrance. Within minutes, all eight people who had lived there in confined silence for 25 months were standing with their hands in the air.

Otto Frank later described come down the stairs and finding his his wife and daughters already held at gunpoint.

The Nazis emptied Otto’s briefcase onto the floor. Among the papers was Anne’s diary. They left it behind as worthless. Miep Gies later gathered the pages and hid them in her desk drawer, unread, hoping to give them back to Anne someday.

The eight were classified as criminals for having hidden and sent to the punishment barracks at Westerbork. Three days after her last written words, the girl who had spent two years recording the smallest details of life in hiding was on the path to Auschwitz.

On the morning of August 4, 1944, the world’s most famous diary stopped mid-sentence.
