The Long Goodbye

So. Hey. Tumblr's not doing too hot right now. Given the site almost just catastrophically broke itself with a horrendous update to the notes system, and the fact that they're basically going scorched earth on transfemmes entirely.

It's not looking good.

But I did want to properly say goodbye in case my main is caught in another trans woman follower purge tomorrow, or the day after, etc. I think we've all felt this slowly coming, but circumstances are pressing me to make things more official, get closure while I still can. It's not you, it's me.

The sort of frenzied admiration I've had for this series has long since faded. But I've become content to revisit it for the odd hankering. WayForward's endless series of blunders can't keep me from holding some fondness for these characters and this series.

Can't thank you enough for all the love and support you've given my silly little fanworks. I do appreciate each time I'm told I would make a great game in this series if I wanted to. Seriously, it gets me a little every time.

I've met some really awesome people running this fanblog, friends that I hope to cherish for a lifetime. It's all been indispensable for building me up into the artist I am today.

Maybe this isn't the last post on this blog ever. If I'm not wiped, maybe a few more pieces get posted here. And who knows, if tumblr and frankly the Shantae series suddenly self-corrects then I may have plenty of reason to come back with intent.

But don't really count on anything going forward. You all have been the best community I could ask for, and I wish you all well with wherever life brings you next.

i feel like holly lingerbean's design is meant to parallel shantae's. primarily green clothes as opposed to red, pigtails instead of one long ponytail, and this ones sort of a reach but holly having orange hair as opposed to shantae's purple (not totally complimentary colors but close enough)

She is introduced as taking Shantae's job so it makes sense that her design is pretty directly a spin on her look. That said, it is probably the shantae design parallel I like the most from the series.

There's enough here that's meaningfully distinctive. I like the use of shorts and arm sleeves in addition to her pigtails to give her a unique silhouette. You can tell she's a foil for shantae because her arms are baggy instead of her legs.

I think ideally a design that riffs on hers should have recognizable motifs and not just...

Today's Doodles: Shantae's Lamp Dance!

Finishing Pirates Curse and doing a 100% run was quite nice, and it got me in the mood to draw one of her animations from the game.

The series' quirkiness really shines every now and then, and this one's one of them. Even with her powers removed from the game, she's like: "Hey, I can still dance! Check this out!"

Guardian Genie of Scuttle Town

I've been in a very Shantae mood lately! I've finally gotten around to play the newly released Risky's Revolution for the Game Boy Advance (in the year of our lord 2026, what a blast), and then I rivisited Pirate's Curse out of nostalgia. I've been sketching the half-genie girl a little over my vacations, and I felt inspired to turn one of the sketches into a proper illustration.

It turned out to be a bit of an ambitious project, but I'm quite happy with the result!
