Being a wolf nonhuman means simultaneously wanting to be a dog in a cozy home getting pets and scraps from the table, as well as a cryptic monster roaming the woods at night.

One of the reasons I like to imagine myself as a huge, ancient, lumbering dragon is that it’s very hard for a creature of that size to get going. I have to drag myself out of my lair, shake off the coins, emerge from the deep swamp waters, pump my wings furiously against the air to take flight. Nobody blames a dragon when they take a while to get started on something. So I can’t blame myself for taking a while to get started either.
