It takes years as a woman to unlearn what you have been taught to be sorry for.

Co created? Go âhead now
@faitherinhicks tweeting a little pep talk for âolderâ aspiring artists/cartoonists (funny to call anyone in their late 20s âolderâ but thatâs how it feels in comics and many other creative industries). That last tweet is important, you are not an athlete where typically your prime years are all but over by 30, if youâre consistently working on your art, you should only be improving with time and experience.Â
I wrote a thing on twitter yesterday. Glad to see people found it encouraging.
This! When I was working at Starbucks and freelancing at the same time, I got to see almost every person I worked with move onto better jobs over the years. They all took more traditional career paths so it was really discouraging to see people that were often younger than me moving onto really awesome jobs while I was stuck in food service with a degree that seemed to not be getting me anywhere. It took longer for me to get my dream job and I did get discouraged along the way, but the point is that I got there.
Donât expect success right away and never compare yourself to others.
YES GOOD THANK YOU

Any advice on how to break in to the industry, whether creatively or within a job? You seem to have gotten it down pat, and I hope to be as successful as you are at your age x_x
Now that Iâm floating high enough to see airplanes in my ego balloon, I think I can offer some advice. When it comes to the job market these days, it takes a lot hard work, some skill and a pinch of luck (or a lot of luck, depending on your perspective) in order to find something you can both support yourself with and be happy doing.
With that in mind, Iâve managed to compile a helpful list of:
Writing Jobs
(and jobs for people wondering what the hell theyâre going to do with an English degree)
Author â Iâm starting here since this seems to be the dream job of almost everyone who wants to write. Authors spend their lives crafting stories with the goal of being published in book form and hopefully making enough money to live on. Some authors become best sellers, but donât count on this. As an author, youâre probably going to also have to get a day job to support yourself. Donât believe me? Hereâs an HP article on 11 authors you know who also had day jobs.
Publishing â You can get a job at a publishing house doing many different things. There are several editorial positions you can get, you can work in book promotions, electronic publishing or even as a researcher. These jobs are available at large and independent publishing houses.
Critic â Do you have a good critical eye? Are you able to pick apart a work and convey your ideas in an interesting manner? Do you have a unique voice? Well then, this job may be for you! Critics review published works like books, movies and plays for Internet based news companies or traditionally published papers or magazines.
Ghostwriter â If you donât mind writing another personâs ideas and handing over authorship credit to that person, then this might be a suitable position for you. Ghostwriters are used most commonly by authors to mass produce material in order to turn a profit. James Patterson uses ghostwriters frequently in his novels.
Marketing â Since writers possess great communication skills, they are often utilized in marketing and advertising fields. Some are in charge of marketing campaigns for various products and may have to work in a collaborative setting. You may get a jobs as a copywriter in this field, preparing product descriptions for print in magazines, brochures and online publications.
Columnist/Journalist â Anyone who likes to write articles and is interested in journalism would like this job. You can write articles for various news publications. Generally, people in this field will set up and engage in interviews with people for their articles. There is also a lot of research involved depending on what youâre writing about.
Grant Writer â With this job, you are in charge of researching and responding to grant opportunities for an organization. There is a strict set of guidelines to follow when constructing a grant.
English Teacher â If you have the schooling (most teachers need a Masters Degree these days) and like interacting with kids or young adults, then this might be for you. With this job, youâre interacting with students on a daily basis to provide them a strong foundation in writing and literature. This job usually carries over beyond the normal 9-5 schedule as you have to grade assignments and craft lesson plans.
Screen Writer â You can work on your own independent films or write for the entertainment industry, usually movies or TV shows. This is a difficult industry to break into and involves working from the ground up. The process may be expedited with the right connections.
Comics Writer â If you enjoy writing and collaborating with an artist (or team of artists) then you may enjoy this job. You can write comics for the major companies, like Marvel, DC or Dark Horse, but this is generally difficult to do. You can also write your own project, publishing in an online format and peddling your work at conventions. Some comics published in this manner have become very popular (Penny Arcade for instance) and generally make their money off of advertising and merchandise.
Editor â There are tons of different types of editing. The major ones are copy editing and developmental editing. A copy editor generally works on a grammar and structure level, preparing texts for publication. A developmental editor makes substantive changes to a work, often reorganizing, rewriting or removing entire sections of a work.
Literary Agent â You slog through piles of manuscripts, hoping to find one worth your time. Once you do, itâs your job to represent the author and try to sell their manuscript to publishing houses. Youâre often involved in editing the manuscript and are the authorâs window into the publishing world.
Agentâs Assistant â There are some agents who are fortunate enough to have people that read manuscripts for them and present them with ones that might be worth using. With this job, your goal is to find the next diamond in the rough.
Public Relations Writer â Your job is to write materials in order to promote the goals and image of a company or an individual.
Writing Tutor â There are some companies who hire tutors to help their employees learn how to write and communicate better. There are tutoring agencies and even websites (wyzant.com) where you can set yourself up and advertise your services to people in your area.
Translator â If you happen to be fluent in a foreign language, you can get a job translating documents into that language or into English. Translators are often used by publishing houses for international editions of books.
Speech Writer â Are you a fan of politics? If you are, you can get a job writing speeches for various political figures at the local, state and federal levels.
Freelance Writer â You can do a lot of the jobs listed above on your own time. You set your own schedule and your own workload, but the issue is that you wonât always have constant work, which means a sometimes spotty paycheck. You hunt down publications or individuals looking for writers and are often paid for an article or a project. You can both write and edit as a freelance employee.
There are other jobs out there than the ones listed here. Once you find one that interests you, look up what it takes to get into that field and start working towards it. :)

A great list of jobs you can have with an English degree! There's more to writing than being an author, check out what you can do!
BREAKING NEWS: Poet Maya Angelou dead at 86
Maya Angelou dead at 86
Author, Poet Maya Angelou dead at 86
Renowned poet, author Maya Angelou dead at 86
Dr. Maya Angelou dead: Celebrated author, poet - dead at 86
Maya Angelou Dead -- American Poet Laureate dead at 86
It has been reported that Dr. Maya Angelou has transitioned to the ancestors. It makes me uncomfortable; all the news reports that say "Maya Angelou dead at 86." Perhaps, I am uneasy because in my mind, this is a lie. The truth is, she will never be "dead at" anything. Any being who lived and thrived given the life of Marguerite Ann Johnson has long proved to have cracked the code on immortality.Â
I dare say, Dr. Maya Angelou has attained an immortality reserved for fellow luminaries of her generation. Fundamentally, artists never die. We live forever in the work birthed through us. However, this is only a part of the  immortality that Dr. Angelou has attained. Dr. Maya Angelou is momma- auntie-matriarch; we all know, beings who hold these titles may physically pass, but live on in the minds and hearts of generations. So, matriarch and artist make two parts immortal. However, these parts do not complete the being. Dr. Angelou has earned her third part immortal as teacher to humanity. Dr. Maya Angelou's stated purpose has been realized, "My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style."Â
While the above message is pertinant to all beings, it rings deep for a certain group in particular. We diaspora peoples, hold Dr. Maya Angelou dear for all her parts and lessons; the most powerful to me, is authentically being in a world long poised to erase the option. Being remarkably authentic, teaching a group of people that perseverance, grace and happiness are real, attainable, and a birthright is what Dr. Angelou has done and will continue to do.Â
Through her living and accounting we are acknowledged, are affirmed, and are able to excavate so much about ourselves. She is the gifted and the gift-er; we will open what she has saved for us over and over again. My daughters and yours, my sons and yours -- all the new beings that burst their way into this physical plane have the blessing of her life. We have been gifted an example of how to thrive when it wasn't meant for us to survive. What love like this could be dead at 86? Â This love, exists in bounty forever family, forever. Dr. Maya Angelou in her living, showed us how to thrive.Â
Now she transitions to join  what Saul Williams calls, a generation of generators. May there be more laughing with Langston, and dancing with Baldwin and Baraka; more talking and walking with Martin and Malcolm. Now, having attained all the immortality that may exist for a being of this plane, she can join our stars and examples, she can return home. Dr. Maya Angelou's harvest will continue the work she has always existed to do - guide people into the way of love, to the way of thriving, to the way of light. Dr. Maya Angelou will never die, family - she'll always be here. Just like she always was.Â
Thank you for your life Momma Angelou, Ashe.Â
Lovely Always,Â

Women Unified in Consciousness stands firmly on the principal that every individual has a right to literacy. Our concern lies in the staggering numbers of illiterate women and young girls. Therefore, our mission finds particular purpose in programs and services focused on cultivating literacy in this overlooked section of our population.
Women Unified in Consciousness (WUC) supports the literacy of all women; we believe an ecosystem must be established for literacy to thrive. As with any ecosystem, each part must help the other for the survival of the whole. Women Unified in Consciousness believes this ecosystem is comprised of two major partners: the reader and the writer. As WUC moves to eradicate illiteracy and cultivate readers, we call writers to aid our efforts.Â
We believe that writers are pivotal in the fight against illiteracy; writers must now, raise readers. For our first effort we are calling for short stories of creative non-fiction, memoir and personal essays exploring the spectrum of womenâs lives. Our aim is to develop an anthology filled with reflections. It is our vision, that this anthology will provide countless women inspiration, motivation, and community.  We canât wait to read your response to this call.Â
