How to Get More Threads

As we enter into the new year, I was having a conversation with a friend of mine who asked me how I have so many threads (on discord, not here obviously). To anyone wanting more threads, I have two pieces of advice: Bring Ideas

When you reach out to someone new, bring ideas to the table. Have a list of your favourite AUs and suggest to them which ideas you think would be a good fit for your muses. Some of my longest-running roleplay partners came into my life because I took a chance and reached out to them with ideas. If you do not bring ideas forward, then you are essentially putting all the pressure on your partner and I personally have never found that fun. By bringing your own ideas, with any luck, they will also have their own ideas. This is often how I end up starting several threads with one person. Have Something To Reply To When you write your replies, check it over and ask yourself "is there something for my partner to reply to?" I've written more in detail about forwarding a thread with each reply, but make sure your partner has something to respond to, or else it's easy for the thread to go stale.

Ai: Ai will flirt with anyone he finds attractive, which is basically any man ever. Sometimes he is more reserved in his approach and other times, he's straightforward. A lot of his approach depends on his mood and his mindset. Is he more confident in himself? At his core, Ai is a long-term relationship guy. His experience with toxic relationships in the past will eventually drive him away if he isn't getting the commitment he wants.

Rin: Rin has a naturally flirty personality. He loves being the center of attention and has natural charisma. His career as an athlete comes first, though. If we're writing an AU, then whatever career he's chosen will come first. What you need to know, however, is that Rin is also a romantic at heart. If your muse manages to wrangle him from his flirty personality a little, they'll see that Rin's a dreamer. Rin's confidence in himself and his career ensures that he puts romantic partners in their place. For example, a muse doesn't want to commit? Fine, but they'll be knocked down Rin's priority list a bit. When in a committed relationship, Rin has a red-hot jealous side and Rin processes negative emotions using the Big Mad, so you can count on Rin's fiery temper to come through first.

Are you a roleplay pillow princess?

I've been skimming the roleplay Reddits lately and come across people who are asking for their prospective partners to write replies that are a certain length. And while I understand why they are asking for that, in my opinion, length of a reply isn't the only thing that matters when it comes to a good roleplay partner.

The people I reply to the quickest are the folks my muse gets along with most, but these are also people who add things to the story with most of their replies. To be fair, everyone is a bit of a pillow princess sometimes, myself included. Sometimes we're tired or sometimes we're just enjoying what our partner is writing and want them to take the reins for a bit. Other time, we may not notice that we aren't forwarding a thread.

Forwarding a plot is not easy in a reply. It takes work and dedication. Sometimes it can take upwards of an hour to get a reply just right. When we take the time to forward the plot in our reply and our partner does the same, that's when the thread flows smoothly and can sometimes result in waiting around, refreshing as we hope they reply soon.

How do I know if I'm a pillow princess?

Take a look at your replies. Is your muse just reacting to what the other character does or are you forwarding the plot with your replies? Pay attention to who is the "giver" (the person who brings in new ideas, moves the muses to a new area at the start of a new scene, etc) and who is the "receiver" (the person who is just reacting to what is happening to them).

Are your partners ghosting you?

Ghosting happens and sometimes it's out of our control. It sucks when it happens, but I would say that if you are "always" getting ghosted, take a look at your replies. You may have fallen into pillow princess tendencies.

Do you have writer's block?

Sometimes we get a bit stuck in our replies and a reply may feel a bit forced. It's natural to happen from time to time, but if you are often getting stuck, it may be because the weight of the entire thread has fallen into you.

How can I avoid being a pillow princess?

Try your best to add something new to the thread in each reply or at least every second reply. If you yourself get stuck, contact your partner and plot out a scene in more detail. Having a more direct plan can help prevent both of you from getting stuck during a thread.

Don't be a pillow princess while plotting, either.

If someone contacts me wanting to plot and I ask them if they have any ideas, avoid saying "oh, it's up to you." Yes, sometimes we just want to throw our muse at someone else, but without any direction, a thread can go stagnant.

If you can become a roleplayer who tries to make it easier on their partner by forwarding the plot in your replies, I promise you that you'll have more threads than you know what to do with. I often have folks who want to write with me because I am a "good writer" aka. I try and come up with fun ideas, plot them out with my partners and add new things to each reply.

Other tips:

- Have your muse ask the other muse a question or two. Do you know their favourite colour? Is there something odd about their physiology?

- Have something happen in the environment. A fight breaks out. Your muse prevents their muse from nearly getting hit. Etc.

- Have your muse do something to their muse.

- Try an AU. How would your character react if they were someone else or in another place, another job or another time.

🌸🐁 With the way Nezumi grew up, untether to society and cut off from all human connections, I don’t think there was a part of him that even considered the possibility of a relationship with Shion at any point. Nezumi never planned to survive the Correctional Facility, but after he did, all he thought about was leaving No.6. His task there was done and he was free of his burden. Yes, he did love Shion, as well as fear him, but there was nothing left for him in No.6. He doesn’t even bring up their bond as he’s leaving until Shion does.

Nezumi does love Shion. He believes in Shion, but he also doesn’t have enough social experience to compare his feelings for Shion with his feelings for other people. He has never been close enough to anyone, so there is no way for him to understand how he truly feels about Shion and whether this love is something to build a relationships on.

Nezumi has promised to come back, and he will. He does want to know if the city is doing well; he does want the city to do well, but I don’t think that he is coming back with the intentions to pursue a romantic relationship. ( I do think there will be feelings between Nezumi and Shion that might feel like an echo of something. ) But if they truly want to build a healthy partnership, they will need more than the spark lit by their past codependence.

This feels a little like Ai and Rin. I write both Ai and Rin and have played both sides when they meet when they're older. Since Ai is my baby:

He knows that his feelings for Rin when he was younger was puppy love and codependency. He is deeply hurt by the way Rin treated him and he has trauma from it. This plays out in Ai's stutter. If Rin reaches out unexpectedly, Ai is flustered and he stutters. He is also reluctant to let Rin back in his life, which often surprises other Rin's I have written with.

Ai so blindly followed Rin and he recognizes that. I love that he grows a backbone later and if he does become romantically involved with Rin later, it is often difficult for Ai to move past those feelings of hurt and trauma.

Aiichirou stared a moment when the man in front of him swallowed, his throat working. He glanced away, willing his cheeks not to flush. His own drink wasn't empty and he briefly thought about trying to take it back to the theatre and might have tried if he wasn't sitting right at the bar. It couldn't have been too difficult to slip it out, but he was afraid they were under watch. Damn.

He downed his own glass of wine in a few swallows and winced at the rush of bitterness. Wine was to be sipped, not chugged. He shivered, a whole body shiver.

"That would be sweet. I do really like this shirt."

Aiichirou followed the other through the crowd, feeling heat on his face from the wine he'd just downed.

Empty, the theatre had an almost creepy vibe to it.

"Whoa," he said without really thinking.

Nezumi's brow rose slightly when, instead of an answer, the stranger chugged down their wine as if someone held them at gunpoint. They didn't even seem to enjoy it, so why drink it in such an unpleasant fashion?

Granted, perhaps the prospect of following a stranger through an empty theatre required a boost of courage, and while Nezumi wouldn't have minded if he was told no—he would understand—he was glad he wasn't.

"Alright, follow me."

In the end, the man agreed, and Nezumi beckoned them to a door at the lounge that read: STAFF. He pulled a small bundle of keys and unlocked it, showing them to a long hallway with stairs that went up and up and up until they reached the other side of the stage. They walked right behind it, with one wall being an interchangeable panel with various scenes and backgrounds, and the other made of a heavy red curtain.

Nezumi turned some lights as they passed for visibility.

"The changing rooms are on the other side," Nezumi explained, and as they passed the curtain, the echo of their steps faded. One hallway changed for another and soon, Nezumi was unlocking the door to his dressing room. The worn bronze letter spelt the name Eve.

"Here we are. If you're with a group of friends, now might be a good time to let them know you've temporarily left the party. The sink is right there," he pointed to the corner, right next to a tall privacy wall.

"You can soak it up, and I'll try to find detergent. I should have some around." He began to rummage through the disorganised costumes, wigs, make-up, jewellery and other proprieties.

Backstage was like a maze. It was so dark that Aiichirou could only see the outline of the man in front of him. At least, until he turned on the lights as they passed.

"They don't have automatic lights?" He asked. "I guess they wouldn't in these old buildings."

They came up to a door. "Oh." Aiichirou recognized the name from the character in the play. He stared at the other for a moment, placing the character he'd seen on the stage with the man in front of him. He could see it.

"You're a good actor," he said conversationally, plugging the sink with the plug and filling it with cold water. "Not that I'd know what a good actor is, I suppose. I don't have much experience judging these kinds of things. I'm in medical school, so it's not like I know anything about acting, but I enjoyed it."

He stripped off the shirt and held it under the cold water, turning off the tap when the sink was full. Already, just under the cold water, a tiny bit of the stain was lifting.

"I know it's probably weird to be half naked while I say this, but I'm Aiichirou by the way."

When he looked around more properly, they were in a room filled with wigs, costumes and props. It seemed to him like a bit of disorganized chaos. It wasn't messy per se. Just, a busy place. One that got lots of use.

I'm doing my yearly winter baking where I bake hundreds of cookies and other treats for the holiday season.

I was thinking about headcanons between Rin and Sousuke. I think that Rin wouldn't do holiday baking unless he was made to by Gou or his mom, not because he doesn't like it, but because he's simply too busy. With Sousuke, I think it would be something of a hidden talent. Like, he'd just show up at work or an event or something with homemade, intricately decorated cookies or snacks.

Many students lived on the campus, but a few still spent their weekends and holidays at home, thus missing the infamous Saturday parties. To make up for it, they tended to busy the lounge even on the odd Tuesdays and Wednesdays when most office workers wouldn't even think of enjoying a glass of wine after a long day at the desk. The actors, on the other hand, were a completely different breed—capable of shifting schedules and fast adapting. Nezumi pushed through the crowd, holding his glass of red wine with both hands against his chest. He elbowed his way through the cramped, poorly ventilated space with his eye set on a particularly busy booth with a loud bunch of comedians that so often got on his nerves, but without which he wouldn't be able to sell a single ticket. The crew—the supporting actors—were almost as close to a family as Nezumi could get. He was just about to reach them when a wave of cheers and excitement shifted the entire crowd to the left. Someone's elbow rammed into Nezumi's back, and his glass of wine spilt onto some poor boy who—just about a second ago—looked like he wanted no part to play in the idiosyncratic blowout.

"Shit—I'm sorry," Nezumi winced, angry about the spilt wine, but also regretting the damage to the person's clothes. He watched the wine soak their shirt, blooming and creating an irregular map of washed-out red. "That'll be a bitch to wash," Nezumi commented, gauging whether the boy was upset—and if so—how much.

Aiichirou's attention was drawn by a series of cheers that erupted near the middle of the room. He craned his neck to try and see what everyone was so excited about when he felt the warmth of a spilled drink running down his front.

"Oh - fuck!" The words slipped out before he even had time to process. This was a nice shirt. It was just a sweater, but it was white with a black drawing of a cat snoozing on a moon.

Aiichirou let go of the grip he had on his own drink, leaving it on the counter of the bar and ripped the white sweater off over his head before the liquid could stain the grey tshirt he wore underneath. One always wore grey under white.

"God dammit," he said under his breath, examining the damage to the sweater. Red wine. Great. Well, that'll teach him to wear white in a crowded place, he supposed. Always better off with black.

Aiichirou started a bit when he heard a voice talking to him and about his sweater. He hadn't expected the culprit to stick around, as people in these settings often didn't even notice their spilling drinks.

"I - um... yeah." Immediately, Aiichirou could feel a flush begin rising in his cheeks. The man was cute, but he never liked to assume. It could be dangerous to assume, in fact. "Well, if I soak it in cold water first. I guess I shouldn't known better than to wear white," he laughed.

It was no surprise that the stranger wasn't thrilled. Nezumi didn't blame him, the sweater he wore looked fairly new, and the colour didn't pair well with a nasty wine stain.

Despite the accident, though, the man seemed to handle his irritation privately and only turned to Nezumi when he was addressed. Nezumi winced and pointed at the sweater again. "I'm really sorry. But here—." He drank the rest of his wine in quick succession and set the empty glass on the bar, then pulled out a bundle of keys from his pocket and jingled them.

"I have access to the theatre's dressing rooms. We have some washing-up liquid there. You could lessen the damage if you soak it up right now, and I could lend you a jacket so you don't freeze on your way home, hn?"

There was never any point in lamenting over spilt milk—or wine, in this case—no amount of moaning could undo the damage done. But a solution, and a good one, could alleviate the harm.
