So, about those Abyssal Genasi
Well, I accidentally ended up working on an entire abyss-themed mini-splat. Still in the writing stages now. I’ve got the abyssal genasi done, as well as a new sorcerous origin and barbarian path. Also, here’s a sample feat, based off Wizards’ new Unearthed Arcana:
Torturer
In the right hands, the whip is a terrifying tool, able to cut foes down or extract information from them. You've spent a great deal of time learning to control this delicate instrument. You gain the following benefits.
You gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls made with a whip
When you wield a whip, its damage die increases to 1d6.
When attempting to intimidate a restrained creature, you may use a melee weapon attack with the whip in place of a Charisma (Intimidation) check. Damage is applied as normal.
It’s done! That said, photoshop is a bit weird about Pdfing the whole thing in a way that doesn’t look garbage or break, so I’ll be dealing with that another time.
So, here’s version one.

Omg!!!
okay a few big problems
First, there’s a lot of overpowered stuff in here, presumably because of power creep, or the designer just wanting stuff to be strong and cool (which is totally fair, ive done that)
So first: Gem rebirth is WAY TOO STRONG. You never roll death saves? Period. Never. You just automatically stabilize. That is comparable, and way stronger than, the half orc’s relentless feature (which just puts them to 1 hp if they go to 0 hp.
Second, the worker get’s proficiency in 3 skills, whoa what WHAT?? That’s absolutely crazy, that is equivalent to a first level Bard pick. Compare that to the half-elf which only gets 2 and that’s the main power of the race. You’d have to cut all other aspects of the worker to balance that.
Third, some unintentional stuff probably, the 18th level feature of the gem warrior literally just makes it unkillable. I’m assuming what happened here was they made the feature very early on in development and never re-balanced it as the balance and scope of this changed and grew.
Fourth, a big oopsy. At 13th level the elementalist can transform into their element, neat! Except… now the magma one is absolutely overpowered. Magma deals 20d6 fire damage when submerged into it, and the magma elementalist can enter other people’s spaces, so free 20d6 damage basically whenever you want. I rlly hope this was just overlooked.
finally, just a bugsy thing. Lapis’s water wings has a duration of 3 hours. That’s so random and arbitrary. Probably better to put it at 1 hour (compare Fly which is 3rd level, and lasts only 10 minutes with concentration.)
Other than these things, this is surprisingly well developed and just needs a second draft.
I just wanted to take a moment to address a few thoughts on the SU materials.
First: Gem rebirth is definitely not comparable to orc's relentless. Orcs can continue fighting when they should be knocked out. Gem rebirth still leaves the gem unconscious, it just requires enemies to continue targetting them in order for them to die. You can still very easily get failed death saves in a campaign where death is a looming threat, you just no longer roll for them. This feature really stops mattering after third level or so, unless you don't have any reliable healing in the party, as every party member is probably going to be up within a round anyway.
I agree, I went overboard with three skills on the worker. I'd balanced it as 1.5 race points, since half elf's skilled is considered to be 1 rp (equivalent to an ability score). Rebuilding it, I'd make it 2 skills and 2 tools.
The unkillability was intentional, and not made early in development. At 18th level, you're epicly powerful, and I wanted to create an ability that reflects that without conferring too much mechanical strength. Gem warriors at 18th level can still be taken out of a fight just as easily as anyone else, as well as being susceptible to various non-damage death effects. They can also just be scooped up and thrown into a small box, rendering them more-or-less permanently dealt with.
I admit though, I didn't think of players trying to argue for dealing damage with the elementalist transformation bit. That should definitely be tweaked to remove that possibility.
As for lapis’ water wings, I don’t think it was particularly arbitrary. I wanted a more long-term flight solution that didn’t take up concentration, so it needed a higher spell slot. I also wanted it to be possible to have the wings for an entire day, hence the extended length on higher levels.
Abyssal Genasi are pretty much done.
Written out, anyway. Now looking for someone to draw a couple of them, as there really aren’t any creative commons sources I can use.
not the biggest SU fan, but I am a huge nerd for RPG mechanics. do you have more like this? it makes for interesting reading

Considering creating DM Guild materials
Since I’ve actually got a handful of followers now, I’m interested in seeing if any of you would be interested in some more official 5e materials that I could submit to the DM guild. I’ve had a few ideas kicking around in my head, and I’m most of the way through a prestige class that allows wizards to become Liches.
