why spells don’t always succeed

This post will talk about the different reasons why your spells don’t always succeed, and a little about how you can deal with it.

1. your worrying is what’s nullifying your own spell

we’ve all been there before, stressing out about a spell and worrying about whether it’ll succeed. well, guess what? these nagging thoughts can actually nullify the intended effects of your spell. when you cast a spell, your intent is going into it in order to power the spell, but when conflicting energies are being sent in the same direction, it’s going to neutralize the original intent. especially if it’s an emotion-heavy spell like a love spell. the spell may be nullified if your worry equals or outweighs the time and effort put into the casting long before any effects even start to show. give it some time, don’t worry your spell into the ground.

once I cast a binding spell that didn’t seem to take effect in the first two days after I cast it, so naturally I was quite concerned. however, after that I just kind of forgot about it and only was reminded of the spell when I caught a glimpse of the spell jar occasionally. and it worked out. the spell worked.

2. your subconscious has a part to play

what if deep down you don’t really think the spell will work? what if your subconscious isn’t fully willing to be doing this spell? what if your heart isn’t in it and you don’t really want the outcome to happen? personal will and feelings are such an important thing in spell-casting that even if any aspect of your own moral system or personal desire is in conflict with the desired outcome, it’s going to be an obstacle.

think about it this way. what if a friend asks you to cast a love spell to reconcile them with their ex, and you know it matters a lot to them so you do it anyway, yet you personally don’t really want them back together for whatever reason. the spell is Not Going To Work.

3. you’re casting it even if you don’t feel up to it

if you’re low on spoons, the spell might not work out the way you want it to, because energy is an important part of spell work. or if you’re not in the mood to be casting a spell, your feelings can interrupt your spell work and cancel out whatever intent you tried to send out.

sometimes we have our down days and our lulls or just have some unexplainable shy away from witchcraft. you’ll find it hard to raise energy, or focus, or find the intent, or even put the spell together, so all in all not a very fun or effective experience to be casting a spell when you don’t feel like it.

4. consent consent consent? have you got it?

every magic(k) practitioner will understand the importance of warding and shielding and probably have some form of method to keep someone else from casting a spell that affects them. even if your intended target isn’t a witch or does not practice anything of the sort, if the spell is intended to change something that involves a large part of their involvement, then you have to check if they’re already to willing to do this in the first place or nah.

if their will is strong enough against something that you intend for them to do, then there is a strong possibility that the spell will not work. unless you’re able to channel something stronger, whether it is your own will and emotions, or that of a group of people. there are always exceptions, and it’s always a case-by-case basis. take curses, for example, when you have strong emotion or a cause pent up into a curse, it’ll really pack a punch.

I cast a spell that acted as a sort of wake-up call for someone to act on their priorities. someone who was waiting around for the opportunity. the person I cast the spell on was not already opposed to the idea of confronting their problems, so when I intended for the spell to put them into action, they were able to be swayed in that direction.

5. losing your focus

are you surroundings too chaotic or noisy or messy? are there any distractions in the room that can sway your focus? is something on your mind preventing you from keeping full focus on your spell? there could also be too many different energies coming from the surroundings, especially if you’re casting in a busy environment. here’s where circle casting can save you some inconvenience.

without focus, you’ll most likely lose your intent somewhere in the mix. you’re saying the words, you’re doing the things, but when your concentration isn’t there, you’ll find that your spell may not even be cast properly at all.

6. your spell is too specific or vague

sure, it’s good to get into the specifics and clarify terms, but when you go in with too specific an intention in mind, this may not leave enough space for the effects of the spell to manifest. most likely your magic will hit a corner and trip or get stuck.

being too vague is also an issue. when you’re leaving Too Much space in your intent in a spell, it can make your intentions unclear. this can cause a lot of issues like misdirecting energy, your spell working on the wrong person or causing the wrong outcome, etc.

7. asking for something that a spell cannot give you

setting unrealistic goals and expectations. expecting the impossible. sure, the whole point of a spell is to bring something out of reach, but there are limits to magic. it cannot break the laws of physics in the physical plane, you may be able to get away with that in the astral planes, but not here.

8. the spell worked, but not in the way you expected

spells are tricky things, the outcome may not turn out like what you expected. but it may very likely still fulfil the original intent you had. magic may be unpredictable, but it still has its ways. oftentimes, it’ll take the path of least resistance. for example, while you cast a spell with the intent to give yourself better grades, you may expect your grades to just miraculously improve, but most of the time that is not the case. the spell may clear your schedule so that you have more time to study. things like that.

9. sometimes they just don’t work, and nobody knows why.

don’t always expect a 100% chance of success when it comes to magic. that’s part of the fun, and leaves a lot more room for things to work out. even if the occasional spell fails, you’re still valid in your craft. everyone has their bad days.

after-spell self care

This post will cover any post-spell afflictions and how to take care of yourself after casting a spell that does not work.

Spells don’t always go 100% smoothly, or even work at times for that matter. Every witch must be prepared to deal with some backlash from spells, be it a failed spell or just a really draining one. Sometimes you get that hangover-sensation after casting a spell, or even just feel yourself dropping into a period of lull after attempting magic.

Well, you’re not alone. A lot of witches can relate to this, and it’s not always easy to deal with. I myself am not excluded from this, but I guess I’m here to share some tips on how you can better take care of yourself after a spell.

1. ground and center

I know this is the most basic advice around but grounding after a spell and centering either before and after can help you actually feel better and improve your energy flows. there are many ways you can ground and if it helps you can spend some time figuring out what works best for you.

here’s a really good post covering grounding and centering and general protection. grounding helps to release any energies and balance the flow of energy within yourself, while centering helps you to focus all your intentions before a spell and make sure your energy is in check and ready to go.

2. eat or drink something

technically this is a subset of grounding, but reminder to stay hydrated and maybe have a snack or two after a particularly taxing session of magic or astral work. food and drink also contain energy, and you need to take care of your physical body as well as your metaphysical self.

3. nap or sleep

It’s incredible what a little rest can do for your body, both metaphysically and physically. Sleeping helps your energy to settle after a particularly draining or scattering spell-casting session, and you can also nurse a headache or any lethargy this way.

4. cleanse cleanse cleanse

cleanse the space you cast the spell in before and after you’ve casted the spell. sometimes the problem doesn’t lie in having too little or too much energy, maybe you just have the wrong kind of energy sticking to you, or energy that is icky or clumps or stagnates your own energy flows. energy from spell residue, negative energy from visitors or spirits, cleansing can help you remove these unwanted energies and return your space and your body back to its optimal state.

5. do something that makes you happy or relaxed

listen to music. take a walk. watch a favorite show or youtube channel. chat with a friend. play a game. solve puzzles. do something that makes you feel good, be it relaxed or happy or content. a good mood can help to alleviate any post-spell blues and help you feel better about yourself!

ward checkup checklist

if you have an astral or physical space that is warded, you’ll probably have many layers of wards or at least a few strong wards, but regardless of the number of wards you have it’s always prudent to do regular checkups.

do note that each of your wards will have a different composition and function so these checkups probably won’t apply to every ward, so based on the type of ward you will have to learn to adjust your checkup accordingly.

leaks and weak spots. this is quite universal for a lot of wards out there, especially for large wards or wards that involve more complicated shapes or that cover spaces that are filled with corners and objects. certain parts of the ward may be less concentrated than others or may receive less attention when being made, which makes them tend to become more vulnerable faster. make sure that the energy distribution is consistent when making or repairing wards.

stiffness or rigidity. sometimes wards can harden or become rigid in certain areas, which makes them more vulnerable to impact from attacks as they are more likely to break or shatter. there is a difference between rigid wards and sturdy wards, wards don’t necessarily have to be completely unmovable and inflexible to be sturdy and durable. keep energy flowing through wards until it breaks down the rigidity and keeps the wards more malleable.

decrease in concentration. sometimes wards can lose their energy when not in use, especially wards that are made to only activate when provoked. these can lose essentially the body and what powers the ward and make the ward less effective when in use. check up on these wards frequently and make sure that they are still functioning optimally.

clumps and clogs. the energy in wards can gather and clump up or cause a clog sometimes, especially in wards that involve moving energy. this can pose a problem as clumping often leads to well, blockages and decreased flow which can just slow the flow of the ward and stop it from doing what it was meant to do, you know? find clumps or clogs and work energy through it until it spreads out and the energy is flowing like it’s supposed to.

energy reactivity and selectivity. for wards that are meant to filter stuff (e.g. anti-glamour ward) or wards that only react when a certain set of conditions are met (e.g. offence ward that sucks intruders’ energy), they can get less reactive or less selective over time without use. check these wards frequently and test them to ensure that they still work optimally.

energy contamination. for wards that are used a lot and involves a lot of passing through, or wards that are for cleansing or absorption, these can get contaminated very easily. cleanse these regularly or reset them to ensure maximum function.

I swirl my finger in the powder, lightly dabbing it to my eyes. The glamour sets, lending a gentle touch and the warning that all predators have to heed once they try to hunt something colorful.

I uncap the tube, and run the length of my wand along my lashes, staining them with burnt embers and coals stoked with hellfire. It complements the fire in my eyes perfectly.

I dust the sunset onto my face, powdered clouds shaken off the fibers in my brush. I heard that this stuff was made of woven fairy wings and crushed beetle shells and all the beautiful things that was made in the wake of destruction.

I uncap the tube with a pop, and draw the velvety red across my lips. in the dead of night, maybe they’ll see my fangs pop bright against the blood crimson, and then they’ll know why not to mess with a force of nature.

I draw my finger across the glittery powder, finger shimmering with liquid diamond and deconstructed moonlight. now there’s something to match the gleam in my eyes and everyone will know that once I was a child of the stars.

Working with energy sources

How do you power your magic? As with anything magical, there are far more answers than any one person would care to know. When it comes to spells, what you use can have a potent influence on the efficacy of the spell. Whether channeling, transmuting, or just using your own internal energy, it’s good to consider the source of the spell’s power when crafting it. More traditionally minded witches look toward the elements and herbal/crystal correspondences, but there’s also plenty of other ways to power your spells! Here, I review some common and uncommon energy sources and how to use them. This list is most certainly not exhaustive and is intended more to provide a starting point for thinking about what makes different energy sources unique. If you don’t already, I encourage you to think critically about the sources of magical power you use and what makes them so effective!

Traditional Sources:

The sun - As the primary provider of measurable energy such as light and heat, the sun is essential to life. Solar energy is potent and unfiltered so it’s very powerful, but also undirected. For both physical and magical purposes, solar energy has to undergo transformative processes in order to be useful to us. Channeling solar energy to power a spell is a common practice, though it should be done with care since the sun tends to burn up whatever it touches when used irresponsibly.

The moon - The moon is the gentler counterpart to the sun. It traditionally fills a more mystical role, better suited to emotionality, secrecy, and protection than raw strength. The moon’s phases also offer clear time periods to suit different goals, especially ones that need time to develop. Many practitioners choose to time their workings by the moon’s phases, like to ensure that a spell manifests by a certain point in time.

Candles - A candle is a firey energy source that can be easily manipulated by the practitioner. Like all fire-based energies, it is best suited for creative works, strength of will, etc. Candles are especially useful due to the high degree of specification they can have. A candle dressed in oil or carved with an intention can be more closely bound to the magical goal and thus more easily channeled into the spell. Herbs, colors, sizes, and scents may also be used to attune the energy source to the goal. Furthermore, the practitioner has direct control over the source itself and can make use of lighting and extinguishing the candle as a means of manipulating the spell’s energy.

Grounding, earthing - There seems to be a bit of disagreement over whether grounding is best used as a conclusion to a spell or as an energy source for a spell, but I think the reason for this is that there are several different kinds of grounding processes. When grounding a spell after its completion, the practitioner is sending the existing magical energy back into the world in order to allow it to take effect and manifest. Grounding as an energy source is a way of channeling energy from the earth (or the universe) to power your spell. Both are good techniques in my opinion, though I tend to find other ways of concluding and “sending out” my magical works similarly effective.

Man-made Sources:

Railroads - Railroads are an old form of energy, at least as far as man-made sources go. They are a good source of energy for things that need a lot of strength, or that need to travel long distances. They also have a significant association with trade and commerce, as well as with moving or traveling for pleasure.

Subways - I find myself using subways most often for work related magic. I find the electrified third rail to be a powerful point to tap into when working spells that need to reach across the city (like calling for trains to come sooner) or when I’m working in the direct vicinity. Subway commuters tend to be pretty well synchronized to the ambient energy, so you could also probably use some of it to affect the atmosphere on the platform or give yourself a little boost of energy before heading off.

Outlets & Adapters - I love using adapters for charging little charms and sigils! It’s a pretty neutral energy, plus it’s well suited to passive charging. Usually, I can leave stuff sitting on my laptop adaptor overnight and find it all juiced up in the morning. You could also definitely transmute it for use in more structured/ritual-based spells, though I find it a bit awkward to include.

Internal Sources:

Personal energy - Like most things, the magical practitioner themselves may act as an energy source. In some cases, this is desirable as it allows for a very personal mark on the spell. Tying a spell’s energy to one’s own will and strength gives the practitioner direct control over the spell and also can help them keep tabs on how active the spell is. On the other hand, a spell might require more energy than the practitioner has to offer, potentially draining the user unexpectedly, causing the spell to fail, or both. Personally, I use my energy when I have some extra to spare, which is a nice way of saying I dump all my anger into my curses. When doing that, I also make sure to seal off the spell when I’m done so none of it comes back to me. If you choose not to seal off your workings entirely, you may leave a limited connection in order to keep tabs on whatever it is you’re powering. I do this for simple servitors and wards so that I can keep them from running too low. I wouldn’t recommend dumping all your energy into a spell all at once because you can and will exhaust yourself.

Channeling - Channeling is less a source of its own and more a means of using sources like those mentioned above. When channeling energy, the practitioner simply acts as a conduit to direct external energy into their magical work. Channeling is generally regarded as a pretty basic energy work skill and is virtually essential for witches, regardless of path. Of course, now that I’ve said that, someone’s going to tell me they have a practice that never uses channeling, but hey, that’s how it goes. I think the trickiest part of channeling is keeping your energy and the energy you’re channelling separate. Obviously, your own personal energy can be used in a spell, but that gets exhausting fast and if you’re trying to avoid that by channelling, you should be careful not to still end up draining yourself too. Likewise, channelling opens you up to direct contact with external energy sources, some of which you may not want lingering around. If you’re worried about getting stuff mixed up, try working with a familiar energy source like a crystal or a plant before working with more powerful energy like the sun or a planet.

Transmutation - Like channelling, transmutation is a way of making use of energy. Its main difference is that instead of using an energy specially chosen for the practitioner’s purposes, they simply pull from what’s around and transform it on the fly. Transmutation requires a bit more practice than channeling, as you have to modify the energy you’re bringing in before you can make use of it, but it’s also damn convenient. I find it best used when working with neutral energy, especially the kind that seems to linger around cities and man-made sources. Neutral energies can also be combined through transmutation, so you can even mat Transmutation of natural sources is most definitely possible, but it’s best suited to the kind of generic energy that you’d find in unprogrammed quartz rather than say, trying to transmute the energy in lavender for a nasty curse.

How Magic Works

These are just some of many different theories about how spells work. For anybody who really enjoys “magical theory” like I do or is looking for validation that there’s something to all these weird spells! None of these serve to discredit magic, but rather add a deeper level of understanding to it. The success of a spell could be credited to more than one of these, or something else entirely!

Law of Attraction. Basically, the idea that you attract what you focus on. A popular example is focusing on the color red, and seeing how much red is around you that you didn’t notice before. This is most effective for spells involving personal matters and success, by formally opening your eyes to details and opportunities you may have missed otherwise.

The Placebo Effect. It’s a proven fact that our bodies can heal ourselves merely by belief that what we’re doing helps! This can extend beyond health spells to things like confidence, performance ability, and other things that aim at personal improvement. The placebo effect may be all that spell needs to be successful ( and it wouldn’t have happened without the spell!)

Direct cause/effect. Something about the spell and the way it was cast directly affects the outcome. Example: a sigil designed for protection, when looked at, serves as a constant visual reminder that you are protected, subconsciously strengthening your wards.

Science/chemistry. This is most true for kitchen witchery and herbalism. Chamomile, lavender, and other herbs aren’t corresponded with calmness and sleep for nothing… they’re made up of chemicals that have been scientifically proven to calm the nerves and aid in sleep!

Quantum physics. There’s a phrase called “Quantum Woo,” where people use quantum physics (often incorrectly) to explain any type of magical thinking or practice. While the ultimate theory behind quantum physics was recently disproven, the discoveries made through research still hold true. Basically, we know particles behave differently when observed, and our energies can effect this. We just don’t know why that is. This is the baseline behind a lot of energy work.

Divine string pulling. Ask and ye shall receive. This is where we depart from the physical to the spiritual side of magic. Many people do magic by appealing to divine forces, Mother Earth, God(s), the Universe, whatever you want to call it. This could be with an offering, a ceremony, or even just bedside prayer. The divine force hears the request, and grants it by affecting change and “pulling strings” to cause the desired outcome.

Spiritual string pulling. Very similar to the previous point, but with entities that are not worshipped or seen as divine. Many believe that spirits can still affect change “behind the scenes.” A spirit worker may make a deal with a spirit for luck or protection, or someone may ask their ancestors for good fortune and health.

Personal string pulling. Instead of asking an outside entity, this is the idea that we, as the practitioner, pull the strings. This is most seen through the “cone of energy” method of casting, where we raise a lot of concentrated energy and intent in a space, then release it all at once to do its thing. You also see it with sympathetic magic, where by doing something to a poppet, we actively affect that change on the target. No middle man included.

This is probably the most common way Court cards are interpreted. Often times, they can represent a person in your life–past, present, or future–down to the very last detail. Each of the Court cards has a unique personality type associated with it and I’ll outline those here.

Page of Wands: Has a vivid and childlike imagination. A fresh outlook, a thirst for new ideas and a passion for life. Visionary, innovative, courageous and enthusiastic, unafraid of adventure. They welcome change. Seen sometimes as a change agent or catalyst. A faithful lover with almost unlimited passion and enthusiasm.

Page of Cups: Youthful, creative, intuitive. Compassionate, and often highly imaginative. Dreamy; they believe anything is possible, so long as you can imagine it. True romantics at heart. Emotionally vulnerable at times and need affection and attention. A reliable friend who wants to help you and be of service.

Page of Swords: Someone whose mind is running non-stop, looking at things from different angles and trying to understand how everything works. Loves asking ‘Why?’ and every answer leads to yet another “Why?”. It can be exhausting to deal with a Page of Swords personality. Brilliant with keen insight. Communicate well, both verbally and in writing. Natural curiosity fuels their mental activity. May seem silent or withdrawn when they are, in fact, sizing up a situation, gathering information and processing it before they feel comfortable enough to speak. When they do finally talk, they will dazzle you with their newfound discoveries and insights.

Page of Pentacles: Typically represents a youthful and enthusiastic person eager to learn new skills (especially those pertaining to finance and money) and enjoys turning ideas into tangible results. Sees the opportunity and potential in every situation, and finds the best ways to exploit them using available resources. Entrepreneurial and well-suited to the business world. Still in the early stages of learning entrepreneurship and business and hasn’t yet accomplished the results or success of the King or Queen.

KNIGHTS

Knight of Wands: Highly energetic, passionate, spontaneous, action oriented and ambitious. When they have a goal, they’re unstoppable in their pursuit of it. Always on the move as they charge ahead; transient from one place or person to the next. Often times sexually driven, seductive, charming and attractive.

Knight of Cups: Passionate and visionary, warmhearted, loving, and emotional. An imaginative dreamer filled with ideas on how to make things happen. Sees beauty in all things. Takes time with tasks to absorb it all and appreciate. May need gentle nudges now and then to help them stay on track and get the job done. Inclined to decide from the heart and not the head, preferring to trust feelings and intuition rather than logical thought. Charming and romantic and enjoys your company and attention. Emotionally sensitive; wears heart on sleeve. Can get lost in romanticism and forget about reality (will buy you flowers but forget to pay the bills).

Knight of Swords: Restless, full of energy, ambitious and quick thinking. Always doing something to progress their career or other life goals due to a strong desire for action and success (no matter the cost). Wants to take on the world, but may lack the necessary life experience and maturity. Can often be seen as overzealous, blunt, a know-it-all, tactless and rude. May be domineering, forceful, threatening and imposing, and as such is likely to have gathered a fair share of enemies along the way.

Knight of Pentacles: Loyal, patient, committed, dedicated, and meticulous. Approach may be boring, conservative and routine. Reliable. Very much about fulfilling obligations and keeping promises. Dedicated worker and a loyal servant. Likes doing things the traditional way, especially when it’s tried and true, even if this impedes creativity and imagination.

QUEENS

Queen of Wands: Warm, sensitive, gentle and faithful, balanced by strength, determination, courage and persistence. Knows what they want and won’t be swayed from their goals. Independent but has a lot of friends. Center of attention of a large group. Charismatic and enthusiastic. Sensual and attractive to others.

King of Swords: Intelligent, articulate, authoritative, influential and impartial. Highly qualified and has vast experience and expertise related to their field. Draws upon fact and data to form opinions and then does not let up in proving their point of view. Not exactly an inspiring person but instead prefers to command people who follow them, knowing they trust them and respect their knowledge. Decisions are nearly always the right ones because they see the big picture and never let emotions bias their judgement.

King of Pentacles: No one has a stronger character than the King of Pentacles. True to their word. Reliable, patient, dependable and committed. Whatever they say they will do, they will achieve, often with outstanding results. A true-blue businessperson. Master of the material world. Has a significant amount of experience and knowledge and is, therefore, able to use the money, wealth and power to create security and peace of mind, rather than getting carried away with selfish goals. Often represents a father figure, or a committed partner or devoted friend.

Sometimes, it just doesn’t make sense to attribute the Court cards to a person or yourself. Thus, the Court cards can sometimes take on the character of a situation.

For example, the appearance of the Page of Cups often indicates an invitation or an offer that brings a lot of joy and excitement. Or the King of Wands suggests a situation where you are maturing your goals and visions in life.

⭐Court cards as a part of yourself⭐

Sometimes, the Court cards show a side of yourself. A facet of your nature. It could be a part of you that frequently makes an appearance or perhaps it is a side of you that’s been neglected.

For example, the appearance of the Page of Wands in a love reading could indicate that you need to be more adaptable to change in the relationship. Or perhaps it’s saying that you have already adopted the visionary and imaginative attributes you and your partner need to flourish!

⭐Court cards as a level of maturity⭐

Maturity could be about age, but it’s probably more insightful to think of maturity as a state of mind. For example, the Knight who is usually on the younger side, doesn’t have to be under a certain age, but may indicate someone who is just cresting their childlike behaviors and transitioning into full adulthood.

Maturity could also point to different stages of one’s life journey. For example, the Page is at the start of their journey and has much to learn while the Queen and King are at or near completion and are now able to share the benefits and knowledge gained.
