What is Corneal Disease, Its Symptoms and Treatment
The cornea is the frontal clear translucent tissue that covers the rest of the eye, including the iris, pupil, and other elements. The vision problems that occur due to corneal disorder are clouding, distortion, and scarring. These problems might lead to blindness if left untreated. Keratoconus, Fuchs’ Endothelial Dystrophy, and Bullous Keratopathy are major Corneal diseases that causes vision problems.
What are the symptoms of Corneal Disease?
In Keratoconus, as the cornea protrudes or steepens, vision becomes increasingly blurred, and a simple task like wearing contact lenses becomes strenuous. In Fuchs’ Endothelial Dystrophy or Bullous Keratopathy, an individual may first notice glare with lights at night or in bright sunlight. As these conditions progress, vision may get foggy or blurry in the morning and clear up as the day proceeds. With further progress of the disease, vision remains blurrier and eventually may not get clear at all.
What is the treatment for Corneal Disease?
Treatment is customized depending upon the type of disease and the condition of the patient. These might include medications, laser treatment, or surgery, depending upon the condition.
Keratoconus is often managed with special contact lenses. Newer treatments include corneal crosslinking (riboflavin and ultraviolet-A) and corneal implants. Advanced Keratoconus diseases are treated with anterior-lamellar-keratoplasty or corneal-transplants.
The swelling from Fuchs' Dystrophy or any other conditions which damage the cornea's endothelial cells is managed initially with salty-eyedrops or ointments. If the condition deteriorates, an endothelial-lamellar-keratoplasty is suggested.
Other Corneal diseases include Infections which are treated with medicated eye drops or oral medication. Herpetic-stromal-keratitis is a recurring swelling that develops after a herpes-eye-infection and is managed with anti-inflammatory steroid-eyedrops. An abrasion might require temporary patching or a bandage contact lens. Eye problems caused by Vitamin-A deficiency can be corrected with supplements. Allergic eye disease requires either topical or oral allergy medication. A Pterygium is a growth on the cornea's surface that is most commonly seen after chronic sun exposure. These can be removed surgically. Cancers of the surface of the eye are managed with surgery or topical chemotherapy eye drops. The corneal disease must be treated immediately.
