The Chipmunk Days
Some days are chipmunk days.
Of course,
these days are almost exclusively
preceded by wisdom
tooth pulling surgery.
Today is a chipmunk day.
Here's to tomorrow being a human
day.

Goodbye Wisdom
Today I lose my wisdom
teeth.
I don't know if I'll miss
them.
They're such a pain in my
neck.
Spring Air
Soft spring air all blue-
berries, bees, and buttercups
swirls above my head.
-
Like a Van Gogh, but
lighter. The rising sun inks
my porch dirty red.
-
Fall is all about
sunrise and sunset, but Spring
brings mid-morning's best.

Write on!
Just keep trudging along.
The click-ticking of the keys rattling through your ears
and into something less cliche than your soul.
If typing be the food of discipline...
Write on!

Be Faithful in the Little Things
That's my motto for the foreseeable future. It goes hand in hand with discipline, so there's a clear theme to the things on my mind this year. Discipline seasoned with humility -- that's how I think of it.
But there's also a sense of "live in the moment" to it. Stop daydreaming about what could be and take care of/enjoy what is. After all, who can add a minute to their lives by worrying or dreaming about the future?
With joy, put your head down and work. And every once in a while, look around to see how far you've come.

A Faithful Man
What can be said and what should be --
what will be -- Ah! -- that's the crux of
it all, is it not? Who am I?
Sterling silver dripping slowly
from my ragged pack, the tinkling
mixing mid-flight with passersby's
commentary. What do they say?
"He was. He was -- a faithful man."

Wednesday
You can do it. Just one sentence, at least. Hey! This is like... four or five or something.
Nailed it.

Monday
Every morning at 6am, my daughter and I wake up and watch TV together and play with her toys. I need to try to see that for how amazing and wonderful it is when I am actually living it. If only there was some kind of magical liquid that could help wake me up in the mornings. Oh well.

The Prayer of the Breton Fisherman
"O God, thy sea is so great, and my boat is so small."
Every. Day.

A Minute
A minute is all
you have.
A minute is all
you have.
Soon you'll be awake
and old.
So dream a young dream,
my friend.
A minute is all
you have.

Thanks, Aaron Sorkin.
The other day I had a revelation: My life is what it is because of Aaron Sorkin.
To explain why, we have to work backwards...
I live in Asheville, NC with my beautiful wife and daughter.
The reason we moved to Asheville was to help a friend I met in Tallahassee, FL start a church. If I had never met him, we wouldn't be here.
I also met my wife in Tallahassee. If I hadn't lived there, I wouldn't have met her, and I wouldn't have my daughter.
I moved to Tallahassee to attend Florida State and pursue a degree in political science. If I hadn't wanted to study poly-sci, I wouldn't have gone to FSU.
I wanted to study political science because the purpose and importance of the characters in The West Wing connected with me in a very real way. Without The West Wing, there's a great chance I go to the University of South Florida and my life looks very different.
Thanks, Aaron.

After a Break
It is very difficult to maintain routines when you are out of your usual surroundings. But now I'm back. Time to get back to work. A disciplined nature doesn't build itself!
I recently read an article that explained how willpower is like a muscle. It fatigues. But it can also be strengthened by exercising it over time. My particular constitution does not support rapid muscle growth. So I have that against me. But plug on I must.

Busyness
Busyness is the
enemy of real progress
in life and business.
El Capitan. (at George M Steinbrenner Field)
A Good Name
It is vital and fragile --
full of life and fear.
It is irreplaceable,
and it is squirmy.
It's an intoxicating
haze that surrounds you.
But when the sun climbs higher
and begins to bake,
the fog lifts and you're exposed
like the fraud you are.
A good name. Ha! A good name.
There is none that's good.
No, not one.

Mondays
Mondays get a lot of bad press.
They have their own "case,"
and it is never a good thing.
It kind of sounds like I'm about
to come to they're defense,
but I'm not. Mondays suck.

Spring
It still snows sometimes.
But the flakes are fewer and
farther in between.
--
White banks liquify
as the days progress. Puddles
form when the sun's high.
--
A short walk through brown
woods makes manifest the song
that's begun in your heart.
--
Each breath drenched with signs
of spring. Primrose and nettle
sting sweetly and soft.
