Your turn!
My me too’s feel like a lifetime of what ifs. What if my parents hadn’t called the school about that creepy bus driver? What if I hadn’t gotten out of that college dorm room as fast as I did? What if one of the many men yelling obscene things at me from their car windows while I’ve been out running actually pulled over? For many women in my life these what if nightmares have become realities. I have always considered myself lucky. Lucky that I have ONLY been harassed, grabbed, leered at, catcalled. But I have realized that I do not want to live in a world where my scary experiences somehow make me lucky, and my friends are afraid, and no one is listening. So to all my brave sisters standing up, and for all those who do not feel safe enough to speak out, #MeToo
Bring me all of your dreams, You dreamer, Bring me all your Heart melodies That I may wrap them In a blue cloud-cloth Away from the too-rough fingers Of the world. - Langston Hughes
Look Up
We walk through the world with our heads down. Attention directed at a small screen. Ignoring our loved ones to seek the approval of strangers. More in touch with the emotions of the people in these online webs than our own emotions. But in a world where everything feels so fucked up and confusing we are all desperately seeking answers. And connection. And when we can swipe a finger for what we are told are the answers. And what we think is connection. Who can blame us? But what if for one day we all just looked up?

We lead strange lives, chasing our dreams from place to place.

Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.

Remember who you were before they made you doubt yourself. Before they made you think you weren’t enough. You were perfect. Who were you? I was a little girl who questioned everything. Who needed to understand everything. Who caught garter snakes and held worms and played in the dirt. Who talked to animals and could spend hours looking out the window daydreaming. I was self conscious and shy and blushed when I spoke in class. But I had so much to say. When I let go of all the voices telling me to be someone else I realize that the person I want to be is that little girl. I realize that I need time to look out the window and daydream. That it’s ok to question things and to be curious. That I am most at peace in nature with the worms and the dirt. That when I may seem quiet and shy I am taking in everything around me. That the things they made me think I needed to change are really the things I love most about myself. That little girl was an adventurer. An explorer. She wanted to see things and meet people and understand it all. Remember who you were before they made you question yourself. You were perfect. You are perfect.
This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak, we write, we do language. That is how civilizations heal.
Toni Morrison
A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.
Oscar Wilde
Imagine - John Lennon
Imagine there’s no heaven It’s easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky Imagine all the people living for today Imagine there’s no countries It isn’t hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people living life in peace, you You may say I’m a dreamer But I’m not the only one I hope some day you’ll join us And the world will be as one Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people sharing all the world, you You may say I’m a dreamer But I’m not the only one I hope some day you’ll join us And the world will be as one
I have stories to tell, but I have always been afraid to write. My stories are both light and dark. And if I put them down on paper. If I put my thoughts on paper there is a chance someone might read them. I have silenced my voice, my pen, in fear of what may come out. But I’m just going to see what happens…
