Nepal’s Supreme Court has officially ruled in favour of equal marriage in the country, in a huge win for LGBTQ+ rights.

Same-sex marriage in Nepal has been provisionally recognized after an interim ruling from the Nepal Supreme Court in 2023. Nepali governments have had a mixed record in making this happen, often delaying or ignoring directives, which made it difficult for queer people to get married.

On June 18, 2026, the Supreme Court of Nepal issued a binding directive order to the government to ensure equal marriage rights for gender and sexual minorities to update the civil code to remove any discriminatory language, thereby making the freedom to marry the person you love a guarantee under Nepal’s Constitution.
