When Sun Wukong gave Lihua a fraction of his power, it granted her Immortality and gave her the ability to feel emotion; however, it also gave her a portion of his power to shapeshift. While she could not shapeshift into animals or objects like he could, she could potentially and—at first—with great effort, shift her features to look like someone else. This was helpful in the beginning when, after faking her death, Lihua needed to blend into society. She did so by taking on the face of someone else, sometimes multiple people over a period of time, and living out her days until there was no one left alive who might remember her.

As the centuries passed, Lihua’s ability to “steal” faces became easier and she is now capable of changing her features to look like just about anyone she comes across to near perfection. One stipulation to her ability is she has to have seen them for her to take on their face—whether it is meeting them in person or simply seeing a photograph of them. In recent years, she has even been able to look at ancient illustrations of long, lost people and create an incredibly accurate face based on them.

While Lihua is able to take on the face of another, it is usually not a complete mimicry. She does not take on the person’s personality or traits. This can, however, be different for people she knows exceptionally well. The more she gets to know someone, the easier it is for her to mimic their mannerisms and personality quirks. However there will always be something Not Quite Right—the accent a little off, the expressions too rigid, etc.

Lihua’s ability to steal faces is, in part, a way to protect herself. Cheated out of achieving godhood throguh death by Sun Wukong, she keeps her personal life and her history close to her chest and tends to hold everyone she meets at arms’ length. While she is known to use her real face, those who are aware of her ability might not realise it since she often chooses to change her appearance.

true dedication is doing a deep dive into the history of emperor wen’s children to find out their birthdates ( or a rough estimate of one ) all so i can figure out what year lihua was born for the sole purpose of finding out her zodiac animal. 

i figured it out through an easier way. the chinese zodiac roughly began in 205 BCE and lihua would have been born in 180 BCE, so all i had to do was subtract the 25 years from 205 ( which is two full zodiac cycles and one year ) to figure out lihua is an ox baby.

DISCLAIMER: In an effort to get the muse back, I will be transforming Lihua into a fandomless oc with original lore. While she will definitely still have a Descendants verse, this new lore will act as her new main verse and where interactions will default. I will have to update her carrd accordingly, but for now, here is the new lore.

Have you heard of the youngest daughter of Emperor Wen of the Han Dynasty, Princess Lihua? Of course not, because she doesn’t exist. Not really. She had at one time, but little remains about the girl born as a princess. It doesn’t matter. This is not her story. This is the story of Lihua, the Immortal; the Girl of Many Faces, and it has only just begun.

Princess Lihua was born the youngest daughter to Emperor Wen and one of his consorts during the Han Dynasty. While historical records make no mention of Lihua, it is true she did exist at one time.  A quiet sort of girl, but brought up in the ways of elegancy, poise and grace, Lihua was everything expected of a princess growing up in Imperial China.

However, as she grew up, it became apparent that Lihua was lacking in a particular spark that all humans seemed to possess. It wasn’t so much that she was melancholy, as that would have meant she felt sadness. Rather it was an absence of feeling. Lihua felt nothing. She was a blank slate; unable to feel joy, sadness, hope, grief, or even love. Her mother and the Emperor had exhausted every avenue to find the cure for such a predicament, but no answer came.

Until one day, Lihua’s parents fervently prayed to the gods to give them an answer. In the dark of night, Lihua was visited by the mischievous god, Sun Wukong, who offered her a deal: he would give her a token of his power, which would allow Lihua to feel emotion. In exchange, Lihua would be granted godhood upon her death. Lihua knew that her parents had worried about her, lamenting that their daughter was broken and while she couldn’t find it in her to feel anything about the situation, she agreed to the deal.

It had unforeseen consequences. Sun Wukong was, of course, a trickster god and no deal was ever made without strings. While it was true Lihua could suddenly feel all ranges of emotion thanks to Wukong’s power, he had made her immortal, stripping her of the chance to achieve godhood from death. This immortality became apparent as more years passed, and Lihua remained the young woman she was when Sun Wukong first visited. As everyone aged around her, it was clear that something was very wrong. In the end, Lihua chose to stage her death and disappeared into the night and from that day forth, Lihua the Princess of the Han Dynasty existed no more.

As the years ticked on, Lihua realised she was given more power than just to live forever. Like Wukong, who was able to shapeshift into many animals and objects, so too could Lihua shapeshift. Not in the same way, but in a manner that allowed her to not only learn about the humans around her, but about herself and her own newfound capacity for deep emotion. Lihua was able to take on the face of another—a husband, a sister, a brother, a lover—and this was a tool she learned to master well.

By the time the twenty-first century arrives, Lihua has perfected the art of “face stealing” and uses it as a means to hide her “true self.” For Lihua would never allow herself to be tricked so foolishly again. Now, she lives with the goal to achieve godhood through life’s experiences, no matter how long it takes.
