He was betrayed by the conservative religious leaders who didn’t like that he accepted all the “wrong” people so they trumped up a bunch of nonsense against him, turned the crowds against him, and manipulated the politicians (who didn’t really care about him or them but wanted to stay on the “right” side of public opinion) into executing him even though the charges were baloney.

Or, to put it more succinctly: “The foundational Christian experience of combining religion and politics resulted in the crucifixion of Jesus.”

Which is why Christians have never wanted to combine religion and politics agai—wait, what?
