What to do when you get sick ?
Today I am going to interview my cousin Diamond who currently has covid.. I believe this was a good decision because I can get accurate information from her and understand how she feels about the health system today !
Whom do you call and why ?
I usually call my mom because she works at a hospital and she would normally know what to do. She would ask me my symptoms that helped her diagnose what's wrong with me. For example, currently my Covid symptoms are sore throat and eye swelling. From there on she would decide if I needed to see a doctor or not.
What strategies do you use to get well?
Strategies that I usually use to get well are resting , cold & flu medicine , ginger tea , and eating. Some that I am currently taking are quarantining , cough medicine, drinking soup , and prayer. I don’t get sick often and it doesn't usually take long for me to get better so I let time take its course and I fight this illness to the best of my ability.
What strategies do you use to relieve the pain?
I come from a Caribbean household , and oftentimes when I experience pain I usually let time help me get over it. Where my family is from we do not put our trust in hospitals, so I would normally warm up a heat rag and allow it to help the pain. Another remedy is taking pain meds or stretching that specific area.
Are your healing strategies specific to your family, ethnic group, religious affiliation or local or national context?
My healing strategies stem from my Caribbean upbringing. Growing up there was a homemade remedy from most illnesses. For example , making natural ginger tea , using herbs , using aloe vera for cuts and scrapes , and more. Going to the doctors is absolutely necessary when you are severely ill or hurt .
How do you figure out what made you sick so you don’t get sick again?
Normally I would research similar symptoms or ask my mother. However , in my current situation I got Covid from my roommate at school. Now we both have to quarantine so we do not infect others and so we can heal properly. As stated before , I don’t get sick often and it doesn't take long to overcome my illness so I don’t normally have to make hospital visits.
When you are sick, how do you keep others from being infected?
When I am sick , I usually let everyone know that I am sick. I take proper precautions like wearing my mask , keeping my distance from others , and making sure I don’t make mouth to mouth contact with anyone.
How do you feel about getting sick?
I feel shocked , because I never expected to catch Covid. I am very careful and I take precautions to be sure this does not happen. I learned a lesson also that even if you are careful you can still be infected and you can do everything to make sure this does not happen.
Is there a social cause of your illness or disease?
Yeah most times. In my case today it was definitely a social cause because of how Covid is transmitted. I was in contact with another person who had Covid but was unaware. Other times simple things like cold weather can make me sick, not dressing properly in certain circumstances. Other people have different body tolerance and can get sick easily.
