may i say, as one actor to another, that was truly a masterful performance. i really bought that you two were furious at each other.
this got me thinking about how adora and glimmer and catra approach arguments.
adora doesn’t really hit below the belt during confrontations with glimmer or catra. her emotional intelligence isn’t the best, so she doesn’t always get the intricacies and underlying tensions that made the other person angry, but she generally makes some attempt to explain herself and her feelings and tries to figure out where the other person is coming from. she does have a stubborn streak and won’t budge when she thinks she’s right, but most of the time she seems to get put on the defensive.
glimmer and catra, at their worst, argue in a similar way to each other. they go on the offensive and get mean in confrontations with adora. they really just go for her jugular and aim to hurt her feelings. the attacks are deeply personal: you enjoy being shadow weaver’s favorite. you just want to play the hero and be in control of everything to soothe your ego. your best isn’t good enough. you make everything worse. this is your fault. (and in the times we’ve seen glimmer and catra verbally spar with each other, they take a similar scorched earth approach.)
of course, we know glimmer and catra are in pain and struggling with it, and it makes sense that they would lash out because it’s just so much simpler to find someone to blame. unfortunately, adora makes for an easy target. but it’s not fair to her, and she sure doesn’t deserve it. and she’s struggling too but doesn’t take it out on other people, which is good, except that she takes it out on herself, which isn’t actually better. and in conclusion, a familiar refrain: GET THESE KIDS INTO THERAPY.
