Illuminate - Final Publication
All printed and binding the first copy. Using red thread and an exposed Coptic stitch, which hopefully looks good.
Finally found something I like, and a grid that works with what I want to do fold out paper wise and translucent paper. It looks like its going to be around 100 pages!
Concept Publication Layout
Playing around with different grids, trying to find the right combination of typography. I really like the heading typeface (Azote from Typekit).
Decided not to use the Gold translucent, and I couldn’t get the colours to match up right. Red and green work much more effectively together.
Final Illustrations
A range of some of the illustrations used in the publications. Drawn with ink/calligraphy pen, scanned into Illustrator, Image Trace, and tidied up.

5. to make resplendent or illustrious: A smile illuminated her face.

I’ve decided to call my project Illuminate, and I like the thought of it representing my enlightenment as a designer.
Curious Translucents
I wanted to use a see through element in my publciation, and started to research different options. Coloured acetate was too expensive, and it would need to be brought over from the states, so that wasn’t an option. Then I found the Curious Translucents range from B&F papers here in NZ, and it’s as close as I can get to the vision in my head. It is a discontinued stock, so I’ll ahve to plan and order it early to make sure I have enough. The colours they have available are Gold, Papaya and Kiwi, and I’ll have to colour match printed inks to the translucent samples to make images and test disappear...
Galaxy Constellation Background
Laser cut the constellatiosn onto this background - reduce burn, hold up to light etc
Constellations
A possible laser-cut fold out chart. (Need to test burn power/speed settings)
Experiment Five: Sacred Geometry
Looking at line and pattern - not going to include it in my project, but fun to explore.
Experiment Four: More Optical Illusions
Exploring more illusions and patterns.
Experiment Three: Where is your Red?
A colour experiment looking at gradients and blending similar colours - everyone sees colours differently, and one persons red may be another’s orange.
Experiment Two: Recolour Imagery
Experiment 1: Optical Illusions
