For the first time, Legolas witnesses death, or what death does to the beings around him. He doesnât understand that. Itâs not part of his comprehension. Heâs an elf; elves donât die, theyâre immortal, and so I wanted to try and portray in that moment this utter confusion and bewilderment at Gandalf not being with us, and where could he have gone? This is what death means.
âOrlando Bloom
Elrond: I donât know about youâ
Thranduil saying this with the most straightest face because he heard you, a GenZ, say this: âBut Iâm feeling 22!
Elrond confused because 22 is like a 7 year old for elves:
*You Laughing hysterically in the back*
can we just take a moment to appreciate the deleted clip of legolas in lĂłrien with his hair down like thranduil looking absolutely fabulous
he is basically young thrandy this is the best thing everÂ
Actually, this is Mirkwood after the darkness of Sauron left the wood so this is Legolas seeing his kingdomâs forest without spiders and darkness over it for the first time which I think makes it even more amazing. It also explains the look and action of turning around to look at everything as he hasnât seen it before.Â
Also, he looks so much like Thranduil with his hair down, I love it!

-,â types of people ,â-
hobbits: tiny houses, oversized sweaters, a good book, introverts, writing, gardening, staying up to watch the sunset, fuzzy socks, nice food, tending to keep things to yourself, playing instruments, just wants to live a peaceful life
dwarves: nights out with friends, lives out of spite, really stubborn, sneaking out of your window at 1am, loves animals more than their family, hot chocolate, karaoke parties, road trips, summer nights, cunning folk, believes in old legends
elves: getting lost in the woods, loves photography, wants to travel the world, neat notes, pretty handwriting, athletic, loves fashion, love astrology, curious, hunting, wolves, the smell of wet grass, very artistic, easily embarrassed
humans: messy bun, staying up til midnight, too little sleep, writing poems, loud laughs, loves music, camping, in love with the way nature works, driving at sunsets, determined, a bit of a mess, german shepherds, eye gazes
gimli: i hate elves! theyâre arrogant and selfish and i hope they will all drop dead soon!
legolas, sometime later: [âŠ] what about side by side with a friend? :)
gimli:
Legolas & Gimli
One of my absolute favorite things about Lord of the Rings is the character development and friendship of Legolas and Gimli.
They met and immediately resented one another because of the centuries-old bitterness between dwarves and elves. But once they become part of the fellowship, they learn how to work together.
The moment Gimli tells Legolas about Galadriel giving him 3 hairs from her golden head, Legolas is starting to think âmaybe dwarves arenât so bad.â And Gimli obviously doesnât think negatively of all elves since he declared Galadriel as the fairest thing in all of Middle Earth. (I also love the implications of her giving him 3 hairs when she denied them to Feanor. See The Silmarilion if youâve never read it. Itâs worth the read.)
By the time they meet the Rohirim during their pursuit to rescue Merry and Pippin from the Orcs, Legolasâ instinct is to defend Gimli from Eomerâs threat.
The Battle of Helmâs Deep is another showcase of their friendship. One of my favorite moments from The Two Towers is their friendly banter when they await the battle.
I also love that they turn every battle into a friendly competition. I like to imagine how they got to that point. Did they both silently keep tally of their kills in the battle against the goblins in Moria? And then later discuss it? Perhaps as a coping mechanism to the grief of losing Gandalf on the bridge of Khazad-dĂ»m? I can see it starting as banter between whether elves or dwarves are better fighters. And I can just see how from that point on, they have this agreement of âwhoever kills the most enemies in the next battle is the superior warrior.â
And when Legolas takes down the oliphaunt in the Battle of Gondor and Gimli is just flabbergasted. He indignantly insists it still only counts as one. By that point, they are completely friends who would lay down their lives for the other without thinking twice.
And one of the many moments throughout the series that brought me to tears was their march against the Black Gate. They all expected to die there - a last ditched effort to distract Sauron so Frodo could destroy the ring. They were the diversion and they knew it. When Gimli says he never thought heâd die side-by-side with an elf and Legolas just smirks and counters âWhat about side-by-side with a friend?â
Gimli considers and you can see him really process it. That Legolas is his friend. After everything they endured together, how could they not be? Iâve watched these films at least 30 times and I always tear up when Gimli replies, âAye. I could do that.â
If youâve never read the books, please consider doing so. Their friendship is so fantastic. Itâs truly one of Tolkienâs greatest acts of the trilogy in my opinion. Legolas even built his own boat and snuck Gimli into Valinor, making him the first and only dwarf to ever see the undying lands. The fact that they remained such close friends until the end of time just gives me so many feels. I stan one elf-dwarf friendship as the ultimate enemies to friends trope.
