I was thinking about Frida Kahlo in Coco. But not really in the context of the plot or anything? More in the context of Frida Kahlo’s life itself.

Frida was not a healthy woman. She contracted polio as a child, which left her with a bad leg, and then there was that horrible traffic accident when she was eighteen where she was severely injured. She suffered from chronic pain for decades, had numerous surgeries, was bedridden for extensive periods, and by the end of her life she had her bad leg amputated. Her fragile health always occupied her thoughts, and several of her most famous paintings are self-portraits that deal with the subject; The Two Fridas, The Broken Column, The Wounded Deer. Throughout all this, she led a rich and intense life, and created absolutely incredible work - but by the end, she almost eagerly awaited death, because she was always in so much pain.

In Coco, Miguel meets Frida Kahlo in the Land of the Dead, and physically, she looks fantastic. Here, the ailments of the living are gone after death - broken bones mended and strengthened, fading memories restored. In death, Frida walks on her own two feet, and her bones are pristine, showing no sign of ever being broken or misshapen. She is vibrant and dramatic, standing tall with no support, and working on her art with gusto. The very picture of health, as far as skeletons go.

And… I don’t know, I just think it’s such a nice way for Pixar to depict Frida? In death, she is no longer bound by the chronic pain that overshadowed every aspect of her life, and there’s an afterlife where she can freely engage in all the things she enjoys. I think she would’ve liked that.
